Int'l day suggestions needed, please

I just found out tomorrow is international food day in my son's class and everyone is supposed to bring something tied to their ethnicity. I have no idea what to make, so I am asking for suggestions. Here are considerations off the top of my head, in approximately descending order of importance.

* Greek, German or Polish

* Kid friendly - I believe the diners will be 3 and 4 year olds.

* I assume heating options limited to microwave at best, so something that will be ok in MW, or better yet can be served room temp, or better still stored and served at room temp.

* Finger food, or otherwise not too sloppy to serve or eat.

* I would prefer to make something savory rather than a dessert.

* I will likely not start shopping until 8pm, so ingredients that I can commonly get at a decently stocked supermarket.

* For the same reason, total prep/cook time under 2 hours preferred.

As I write this I am wondering what blintzes are. Am I right that they are Polish and can be sweet or savory? Hmmm, will have to look that up.

I cant think of many savory ethnic finger foods that a 3 or 4 year old would eat....but for cookies.

Kids love sausage. Aren't there lots of German and Polish sausages? I'm not very familiar with Polish or German cuisine. You could do Tiropites with some ricotta and cream cheese and a tiny bit of feta. Feta might be a bit strongly flavored for the average preschooler.

Half barrels of water with some water plants are a good option. The bees are there for water. They like the taste of water that has something in it, like clorine or pond water. They are very smell orinted. I can send you some small water lillies that will grow well in a barrel water garden if you like. Honey bees really are not likely to sting unless you are near the hive or they are squished when they get in your hair or something while swimming. They care nothing about humans or pets that are not near the hive. If something is dive bombing you it is likely wasps or yellow jackets with a nest nearby, not honey bees. In California, you will always have bees, wasps, yellow jackets, hornets, fire ants and a variety of other stinging pests around. It's the nature of the climate. Moving the bee hives likely had little impact on anything other than the bees watering in the pool. Thanks for the suggestions. I should have stated it's my pool propane tank that needs moving, they will not allow us to bury or paint it. I just called up a company that sells camouflaging rocks for tanks unfortunately not the kind of tank I have. I would have taken a picture today, but it's raining, will take when it stops. Right now I'm leaning toward putting a fence around it, with hanging plants. Guidelines also state they need "easy access" on one side. My husband is calling up other companies trying to get a better price, and we are hoping not to dig up more of the yard then we have to on the move. I've always said a house is the biggest sponge you can buy. Thanks again for all suggestions!

NOOOOOOooooooOOOOOOOoooooo! Don't aerate. In fact: 15 yard penalty for withholding information!! Did it just get compacted since you started this topic 4 hours ago??? True compaction is not what you have unless you've been parking the car on it during rainstorms. What you likely have is hard soil. But either way, core aeration will not help solve that anywhere close to what shampoo will do. You can go ahead with the seeding for now or you can do all this simultaneously. Spray the yard with shampoo at the rate of 3 ounces per 1,000 square feet. Follow that up with 1/2 to 1 inch of water to wash it down in. Shampoo is a surfactant that allows moisture to sink deeper into the soil. When that happens your soil will come alive with beneficial fungi which perform the function of softening your soil. The process takes about 3 weeks and can last forever. If after 3 weeks your soil is not noticeably softer, you can reapply the shampoo again. The more you use the softer it gets. First, though, test how hard the soil is by pushing a screwdriver into it. Hard soil is difficult to penetrate even 1/8 inch. If you can sink the entire screwdriver into the soil easily, you don't need the shampoo. Try the screwdriver test with the soil dry and again after you have watered it. If it is about the same before and after, then you need the shampoo. The soil should be hard before watering and soft after watering. When it is soft you will feel it just walking on it. Core aeration will never (never EVER) accomplish the same results you'll get from the shampoo. You might ask how 100,000 lawn care professionals could be wrong about aeration and I'm right. Well, they are. It will only cost you 50 cents to try it for yourself. Actually the most serious of lawn care professionals, the sports turf professionals, have been using surfactants for decades. Shampoo is just the poor man's option. It really works. Okay I'm powering down now...whew! Otherwise you're out of order with your plan. Dethatch first, then mow with the bag on to collect all the fluff and clippings. Then seed it. THEN, roll it down or walk over all of it to press the seed down onto the soil.

I am not there so I can not make the decision nor do I necessarily have all the facts. But when my pets become terminal I do what Sammy said. Most vets, in my experience will dance around the question, or if they do tell you often people will hear only the parts they are comfortable with. These are the rules that work for me. Think of your pet's 3 most favorite activities. When they are down to one it is most likely time to let them go. If they are down to none you may have waited too long. Too early is always better than too long. Food is a big motivator for most animals. When they will no longer eat they are telling you something. Either they are ill or they are dying. That is how nature works. I give my animals the best last days or day possible. I do not expect them to "tell" me. It is my responsibility to live up to their trust in me to follow through in their best interests. On their last ride they get a whole bacon cheeseburger. I am always with them when they cross that bridge. I prefer them to walk in under their own power. To leave this world happy, not frightened, confused or in pain. I am so very sorry you are going through this. It is never, never easy.

We had an international party this past weekend, and a friend brought Greek Lemon Bars - she omitted the raisins and walnuts, and made it in an 8 x 8 pan. These are really good, and I think the kids would like them.

Bake-and-cut lemon bars
Sunset, Nov, 1985
This fine-textured cake, of Greek origin, is cut in small pieces to pick up and eat like a cooky. Dust the squares with powdered sugar and offer as a light refreshment with hot spiced tea or coffee.

Greek Lemon Bars
4 large eggs
1 cup granulated sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla
1/4 cup salad oil
About 1 tablespoon grated lemon peel
2 tablespoons lemon juice
3/4 cup all-purpose flour
2/4 cup chopped walnuts (optional)
1/2 cup raisins (optional)
Powdered sugar

Butter the bottom and sides of a 7- by 11-inch baking pan and dust pan with flour.

Set pan aside.

In a bowl, beat eggs and granulated sugar with an electric mixer on high speed until about tripled in volume, about 5 minutes. Beat in vanilla, oil, 1 teaspoon of the lemon peel, lemon juice, and flour. Stir in nuts and raisins.

Pour batter into prepared pan. Bake in the center of a 375[deg.] oven until cake begins to pull from pan sides and center of cake feels set when lightly touched, about 25 minutes. Set pan on a rack to cool completely. If made ahead, cover and let stand at room temperature as long as overnight.

To serve, sift powdered sugar over top of cake and cut into rectangles about 1 by 2 inches. Garnish each rectangle with a little of the remaining grated lemon peel. Makes 10 to 12 servings.

I would keep it simple for that age group. Pretzels for Germany, pitted black olives for Greece or rounds of kielbasa for Poland. (The Hillshire Farms lite turkey kielbasa is very mild flavored.)

If you live in the Northeast, many grocery stores carry Mr. T's pierogies in a miniature size in the freezer case and that would work for a Polish food. Children must like them because they're often on school menus.

One question, though. Will you son be just showing his ethnic food or will they permit the rest of the class to eat it? In most of the schools in our area, those type of activities have been curtailed because of allergies. If a parent wants to bring in cupcakes or some other treat for a child's birthday, they have to sign a release that there are no peanuts or various other substances in the food.

Potato pierogis can be eaten at room temp. Babka - either chocolate or cinnamon is delicious, or paczki - polish donuts would be a big hit.

Thanks for the suggestions. I was all set to go with kielbasa rounds but when picking up the kids yesterday they said not to bother because they already had too much food.

Ruthanna - While school is a strict no peanut zone fortunately they are not "progressive" enough to require releases. Teachers know their kids' food allergies and keep questionable foods away from them.
