getting duet 9400 delivery tomorrow

Hi there--I wanted to thank you all for your informative postings. Our 8 year old GE profile washer died last Saturday and I have been researching front loaders here since Christmas. I narrowed it down to frigidaire affinity 7000 and the duet or duet sport series. After some reading here discovered I wanted the heated water and that left only the 9300, 9400 and 8500 sets for the whirlpool. Checked Lowes, ABC Warehouse, a local dealer,Best Buy and Home Depot for information. Made at least two trips to Lowes, ABC, BB and the local guy.

The best frigidaire deal we found was $1171 for the pair at ABC, but I was leaning to the duets, even after reading of the problems noted here. The best Duet deal I was finding was $1571 after a 10% off promotion at Lowes. That was a 9300 washer. The Duet sport 8500 was too much more to consider(special order). Husband found the Duet 9400 set in Pewter at Menards and got it for $1614, so for $40 more we got the newest model. It is a floor model and has one little ding on the dryer. I checked the model # to make sure it has the better noise system and it does (astounding the salesman). It is even in pewter which is cool--I liked the blue affinity, but not enough to pay more for it. No pedestals at this time--may stack it later.

I've printed the delivery checklist and am anxiously awaiting tomorrow to get started with these machines. I haven't been this excited since I got my dyson vacuum. I vacuum 3 times as more as I used to--I am thinking I may do more of the laundry myself now instead of making my teens do it (they already have strict instructions to check pockets and fasten all fasteners).

I am hoping that percentage wise we will be in the group that reports no problems--but just in case sprang for the 5 year warranty. Also know to look here for solutions for the more common error messages.

Did we do good on the price? Any other vital info to share?

That's awesome Robin.

Our 15 year old Whirlpool set was dying so like you I have been looking for weeks.

After much debate decide on the Fisher & Paykel set, but backed out shortly after ordering them and got the 8300's instead.

We bought at Lowes also. We paid $1677 total for the washer, dryer, (2) 15.5' pedestals, delivery and installation and (ugh) a 5 year extended warranty on both units.

I spent a *lot* of time researching and the Whirlpools seem to be as solid as any affordable machine out there.

I think you will be very happy.

We are having a party when we get ours installed. I paid 1700 bucks for a W/D and by-God someoneÂs gonna see them. ;-)

Robin did you get the extended service contract for $49 which covers 2 extra years after the first ? Its a great incentive at Menards for sure. Remember to check the manuals on the 8500 washer. See they are dated 3/06 not 2/06. The Central Control Unit in this washer was updated with new firmware in a month or less from started production of the 8500 and I was so lucky to get one dated 2/06...not. Changes made were added heater option in Heavy Duty and Whitest Whites Cycle with a boost to 140 degrees, more water. My new CCU is on order and soon it will heat as most of the units out there do. The 9400 is very nice too and you will be happy. Too big for my closet...lol. Cheers.

mart, I am confused too. It seems as if the 9400 has the suspension system that the 8500 was praised as having for 2nd floor installations. My laundry closet will be on the main living floor of my house (with basement below) in a main hallway. For all intents and purposes I would consider this like a 2nd floor installation since it is above a basement. The option to vent these models to the right or left seemingly allows them to be installed with near zero clearance in the rear.

Hi Barb, My son was in the process of deciding on a Whirlpool Duet pair last week at this time, and we came to the same conclusion as you. One appliance was described as white and the other one was described as being a silver metallic. If you are spending this much money-you very much want them to look good and match. My son wasn't wild about getting a steam washer. The reason for this was because this steam washer thing is new technology and sometimes, you are just asking for trouble-the more features an appliance has. He did, however, want the steam dryer. The benefits seemed to out weigh the drawbacks. Again-more technology-more potenial service calls in the future. He eventually decided on the 9500 Whirlpool Duet Series in the steam washer and steam dryer in the Tuscan Chestnut color. He wanted a matching pair-and the 9600 Duet series in the green color was just too much to spend. As it was, the 9500 Duet series was probably more than he should have spent, too.

Troy, You just wrote to me personally so I will reply here and to your email. I love my Whirlpool Duet HT Washer WFW9400 that bought on 11-06-04. It holds so many towels and washes bedding and my dog beds with no problems. When my doggies (small ones) were sick, I washed their bedding in the sanitation cycle but since it takes so long using that cycle I mainly use the normal cycle with hot water or the short cycle when I do not have a small load. I have allergies so I always use the extra rinse cycle. My clothes come out soft and now never need a softener added to them. I looked up the invoice information and was surprised I had it so long. Time really does go fast. I never had any problems and never had to use the warranty or the extended warranty that I bought from PC Richard. I also love the matching Whirlpool Duet HTÂ® GGW9250PW Vented Gas Dryer, 7.0 cu. ft., 27", 120v, Energy Star, Dove Grey on White that I bought that is quiet and never ruins my clothes. I love being able to fold clothes using the top by having front loaders. I tried both regular detergent and HE detergent and I see no difference in the performance. I would love a steam washer or steam dryer to get out wrinkles but my unit does not have that feature. I just put clothes in the dryer under the air fluff cycle when I want to get some wrinkles out since I dislike ironing.

Craig, I have the first version of the HE3t/HE4t/H35t line, named HE3t. I have to say it is working as well as it did the first day I got it! I am please as can be with it. I do have it plugged into a spike protected power strip. I don't know if that has had any effect. When they first came out, they offered two versions, the HE3 and HE3t. The "t," which stood for thermal optimization, included a heater, faster spin speed, more cycles and additional options. Then the HE4t came out, and the HE3t name was relegated to a lesser featured machine that still had a heater. The HE4t became the HE5t as the model line evolved. I still have the original posters and literature that come out when the HE3t debuted. The HE stands for High Efficiency, the 3 represents Capacity, Convenience, and Conservation, and the "t" for thermal optimization. The HE4t added "Care" to list. I don't know what HE5t added...maybe compassion? :-) Here is a bit about the HE4t I found on the web. The link below shows the excitement with which the original HE3t debuted. HE4t: In 2001, Sears introduced its Kenmore Elite HE3t washer, an appliance which lead the industry in cleaning, capacity, and conservation. Now Sears introduces an upgraded model the new Kenmore Elite washer with a fourth "t" for features that "care" about special fabric needs. We purchased the Duet 9400 washer and 925 dryer from Lowe's in October 2006 (replaced 28 yr old TL Kenmores). So far I love the set and sure you will too.

For comparison, we paid just under $1,200 for the washer or $2,200 for washer/dryer/2 pedestals/extended warranty/delivery/dryer vent hose/electric cord/taxes.

I have been fortunate that so far have not had any error codes. And like you, hope that we are that group that continues to report no problems.

After the wash is complete, we wipe the water spots remaining on the inside of the door (window) and mop up any water droplets remaining in the boot. The door remains ajar (maybe a 1 inch gap) to allow any water remaining to evaporate. I also remove the detergent drawer/dispenser to allow water to evaporate from that and the water fill area. So far we have not noticed any "mildew smells" and hope to continue with that too.

Well just did the first load and it took forever--but due to husband's impatience and insistence that he knew what he was doing! He started a load while I was reading the manual. Didn't run a first load without clothes. He had a couple of towels and some jeans in with casual stuff (we never sorted before). He also used a small amount of regular detergent before I had a chance to stop him--"the guys at the store said it was OK to use up our old stuff". So not only did "suds" kick on, I think it was in the imbalance routine.
When it ended I put everything into the dryer--it was a little wadded up but I blame that on husband, not the washer--and found a pen! I know daughter checked all the pants; god only knows how it got in there; I'm just lucky there isn't ink on everything. It could have been a major disaster if it had gone into the washer.
For the next few days I will do all the laundry myself!

I was hoping to do a load of towels by itself using the sanitize setting. Oh well-all is well now. I've done several loads, everything looks great, machine is level and I am looking all over for more things to wash!
