annz--thanks for the advice! You are right that I like contempory more than craftsman, but I like craftsman too as long it has light wood. I do like our current sofa and chair(even though they're really not my style-it's a long story how we ended up with them) but need to replace them because the fabric is defective and the detached back cushions roll into a big lump everytime we sit on the sofa. The manufacturer did send us new covers for the custions so the sofa and chair look better now than they did for a while, but all the cording around the base of the sofa and chair is raveling and looks bad and I can't think of a way to save the sofa, specially when you add the problem with the back cushions. I am working on the accessories. The pictures in the link are old, so it looks better now than in the pictures but I still have a long way to go. We have also added cushions on the window seats which soften the room a lot. We will be adding more wood to the room though in that we are going to do a built-in in the recess where the TV is to clean up that area a little bit and we are adding more wood to the fireplace, but not a lot more--just getting rid of the white spaces and making the mantle deeper so that I can set things on it. As you can guess, my DH loves wood. At least this house has less wood than our old house--our old house had wood ceilings in the living room and foyer and wood walls in the bathrooms which was just too dark for me. That is a tough room. I agree with you about positioning the small settees in front of the fireplace -it will help to break up the length of the room. You could also do one settee and two chairs across from it, but I like the 2 settee idea. To fill the space I'd do a sofa table behind at least one of the sofas and this will also give you a place to put some lamps. You could place a long low bench under the table to add layering to the room. Do two chairs in front of the window and across from the bench, but don't have them pushed so close to the window as in the pic. A small table between them will make a nice seating area. At the other end, I'd do a desk and chair, but make sure it fill s the space. You could do another seating area there as well if that fits your needs better, but I wouldn't do the same chairs/table set up as at the other end. Maybe a chaise in front of some book cases to make a little reading area or just a large comfy chair with big ottoman and a floor lamp. The pix make it hard to get an idea of the amount of space there, but these are just some ideas. You could also put the desk in front of the window (but pulled out) if there would be room and not block that doorway. Then put the 2 chairs at the other end. You may be able to do a large coffee table in front of the fireplace and then two ottomans in front of it on the fireplace side. Just throwing things out there - hope this helps. You have a lot of straight, contemporary lines so I would keep going with that, but I'd use a couch with a few distinctly different details so you don't get that "tried to match but missed" look. For instance, continue the squared arm, but look for a lower arm that isn't full-depth like the loveseat - for instance, Pottery Barn's Seabury (actually I like the dark wood frame and flared legs on that one, which would tie back over to the bookcases) - or a box-style arm/back like Crate & Barrel's Presley which also has that nifty wood frame. Mitchell Gold's Fred couch would be a really awesome transition between the Eames chair and the existing loveseat, with the square shape and tufted back, if you could find some way to keep the Eames chair in the room. Make sure the scale of the two pieces is the same, paying special attention to the seat height - it looks kind of weird to have one seat significantly higher or lower than the other. I think a low-to-the-ground (very short legs, not low seat) style would work better than a skirt if you want a less "leggy" look. Ikea's Karlstad doesn't look bad though, and would be an option if your budget is so tight it squeaks. ;-) The long cover seems to only come in white but you might find a great fabric cheap on Fabricguru.com or eBay and have a replacement cover sewn up using the white one as a pattern. You're not confined to a print unless you want one, but if you do want to go that way I'd look for something in a Deco or Mid-Century Modern style, either very subtle or strongly graphical; but I think a compatible solid in a heavy brushed canvas or twill would be just fine, especially with pillows that bridge the colors. Leather is also an option to consider, if it's in the budget. (If you were keeping the black Eames chair in the room, this black/beige print would be too cool.) BTW, if I may make an unsolicited comment, the pillows on the loveseat are a little traditional in style for the rest of the room, which skews contemporary. A more modern pattern like C&B's Spotlight or Kramer (outrageously expensive, but places like Target are knocking off things from spendier stores like C&B and Pottery Barn) would suit better, IMO. If you sew or can have pillows sewn, this contemporary tapestry fabric would work wonderfully with your colors. But, you didn't ask that so feel free to tell me to stuff it if you're in love with your pillows. :-) (Pun not intended.) Your other option is to call the manufacturer of your loveseat to find out if they still make that model and fabric, and go matching. There really is nothing wrong with that.

I can see the point about rushing purchases. It's a bit of a quandary at the moment as some purchases seem some what urgent. The rug, for example, will go in the only play, gatherining, tv, space we have in the new-to-us house, which has all hardwood floors. With two children, it seems important to get some thing soft down in the short term. The coffee table can easily wait. But in looking, I started wondering about overall direction the room is going and how to purchase a rug that harmonizes with that. I found this "eclectic" living room on Houzz that I like. The rug is much warmer looking because of the color scheme. And the coffee table has a lighter base, although it is still modern in feel. One thing that occurred to me in thinking about repeating elements as suggested above, we actually already have a reclaimed wood dining room table that we love and will use. The living room and dining room are open to each other. That table is shaker in style, which I have always thought lends itself nicely to a variety of settings because of the simple lines. Maybe I can find a similar coffee table and it will go better with a more traditional rug and repeat the style of the dining room table. Also we have both loved our dining room table for years now, so it seems unlikely that we will tire of the style.
