Thermapen sale

Regularly $96, but if you buy 2 they are $85/each. When they had this sale last year, I bought several as Christmas gifts. Love my Thermapen! (P.S. I'm not affiliated with Thermapen. I just love their product!)

I love my Thermopen as well!!! I use it for everything - leftovers, cakes, meats, etc
My DH gave it to me for Christmas last year - complete with the silicon cover and the leatherette case (and a box of wipes for it) - Of course, I just happened to slip a copy of the catalog in his eating area :-)
Great idea for Christmas gifts!! I might snag one for my niece
Also Cook's just sent their catalog and have a similar style pen but the accuracy doesn't look quite as good as the Thermopen.

I bought 3 Termapens on last year's sale for Christmas presents for our 2 daughters and DIL. All 3 in purple! :)

The electronics that makes a digital thermometer work is not very complex. Basically a voltage stabilizer to maintain constant battery voltage as the power is slowly used up and voltage drops. There is a temperature compensation circuit to automatically adjust operating lineal response whether your room temperature is very low or very high. The sensor, typically a thermocouple, which provides the measurement, is read against an internal reference to give you the readout. The entire package is inexpensive electronics (less than $10.00) which gives you response time in milliseconds. Why some thermometer reads faster than the other? The response time is highly dependent on how small they can make the thermocouple sensor /probe. The smaller it is the shorter the response time. The problem of making it too small is breakage and difficulty in manufacturing. They need to have the metal casing to be very strong so that when you push the probe into the meat it will not break too easily. When you push the probe into food, the metal probe travels thru different temperature zones, typically from high (212F) to low, and the metal will carry the heat from high temperature to low temperature and heats up the food in the low temperature zone. It will take time for the temperature to reach equilibrium, depends on the weight (mass) of the probe. dcarch

Ok - I have to weigh in on the wonders of a turkey roasted in an old fashioned roaster. The separate 'appliance' that sits on your counter and roasts only the turkey. My mom and my aunt both had one and we had GREAT turkey every time. I never gave it much thought until I had to become the Hostess of Thanksgiving. I struggled for several years with that giant turkey in a too small oven for everything else and the timing and juggling for oven space... About ten years ago I spied one at Home Depot for 29$ it came with an electric carving knife. Done. Best thing I've ever bought. I don't even have a thermometer. Moist, flavorful, with crispy skin. I do not stuff but do a similar prep as the Martha one. Everyone raves. Of course they are probably just being nice but when they ask for turkey leftovers I kinda believe them. And everybody keeps coming to our house... Best part is I have plenty of room in the oven for everything else.

If by "dealt directly" you mean ordered from Thermoworks directly, yes, I have. Since I've never had a problem with any of the tools I've bought from them, I've never had a reason to talk to their customer service. Even if a few of the Thermapens are "refurbished," they still carry the full warranty. For the price, I'd buy one, if I needed one. I've already given them as gifts to everyone I know who might have a use for a Thermapen. Back during turkey cooking season, someone was lamenting the fact that they didn't have an instant read thermometer to check the temp of the turkey. They were reluctant to purchase a Thermapen at full price. I was hopeful they might see this post and plan ahead for the next turkey cooking event.

I got a Thermapen a couple years ago, and even though I do love it, it does not register the temp in three seconds. It never has, even when I got it brand new. I've tested it in many conditions and it takes at least 15 seconds to stop. It's better than anything else I've ever used before though so I guess will just have to DO.

How long does it take to stabilize at a temperature reading?

Arkansas- you must have a defective one.
Mine reads immediately. It will never stabilize as it is constantly reading the temp as I move the probe.

Lizbeth - I do like it to protect the probe in the drawer with lots of other stuff. A zip lock or an eye glass micro bag could also work

Before the repair, it never settled on a temperature. Since the repair, about one to two seconds.
