Instead of selling my breads at the farmers' market yesterday, I drove to Black Mt., NC to pick out a hammered dulcimer at the Song of the Wood shop there. It's a 3 hour trip each way and there was some heavy rain on the way up. JoAnne, manager of the shop, was very helpful and we spent almost 3 hours tuning and playing 4 different dulcimers until I found the one whose sound pleased me the most.

For lunch I found a great little bakery that did sandwiches on their bread. My chicken salad on cranberry walnut bread was delicious - so now I will experiment to find a recipe that I can add to the roster of breads that I sell! So, this was actually a "business" trip! Ha!

Congratulations, Teresa on your new toy! I'm sure it will give you much pleasure. And yes, I think that figures as a business trip. I am so pleased for you. Didn't take long either, although it may not seem that way to you.

What a fun trip! I bet your new instrument will bring you lots of pleasure. That sounds like a great sandwich.

Congratulations on your first week! Add me to the list of people who marveled at the setting. Ours is under an overpass right off the interstate- they kick the bums out for the morning, and it smells like pee :-D. The offerings sound delicious. There are always people at a farmer's market who don't bother to check whether the food is local, but stands like yours usually develop a following- people who will buy whatever you have that week because they trust the quality. I look forward to hearing about how the next one goes!

I usually give my friend David most of the leftovers, he enjoys them. I did bring home the extra peach pie muffins, Kim took two for work today and I had one for breakfast. I forgot to mention, there was a small cruise in the harbor yesterday (around 100) and I had a nice rush on sales then. I gave out samples of the raspberry bars and I think everyone that tried a sample bought at least one. They also liked the sugar cookies. My cinnamon rolls were already sold out by that time. We will get many bus tours that stop in town during color season, they love to pick up things to nibble on. Charlevoix has been on the color tour stop list for many years. Nancy

I can't fix the canopy without a whole new side piece so I am going this week without it. There is no FM next week because the park will be setting up for Applefest which runs through the weekend. I'll go to Applefest and try to take some pic's. It's pretty neat. Then there are only two more outside markets until we move inside. Eileen, I do have canopy stakes but they didn't hold. Other canopies blew that had weights..it's hard to be in the open area but there is only so much room up on the side walk and produce gets those spots usually. Plus there are those who have done the FM for years and I'm new. I have a friend who is in the tent rental business, if I do the FM next year, when it's outside, I'll get advice and a new canopy. Annie, jam has been selling, but slowly. I'll see what happens over the winter. There is more booths with jam than there are with the type of baked goods I do. Nancy

Oh, Nancy, I just thought, maybe one of your fish mongers could be there, at least taking orders, since you're right on The Lake? (sigh) I suppose that's wishful thinking but it would sure be nice, you could do your grocery shopping before you ever went home and without going to the store! I've eaten your baked goods and they're better than any I've had at the most upscale of restaurants and fancy bakeries, so I'm sure you will continue to do well. Some people might even like it inside better, not having to worry about weather. lbpod, my library is small and full of books too, but most comunities have civic centers, conference rooms in their city hall, township buildings, etc. I only wish I could convince my small county that a year round farmer's market is a good idea. We have two summer markets in the county and they do a booming business in the summer, it would be nice to find all the vendors in one place in the winter too. We have two permanent farm markets but they close for the winter. One is having "pick your own chestnuts" right now, but that'll end the first week of November, then it will close. I can go pick up local honey, maple syrup, organic locally made cheese, whatever, but it would sure be nice to do it all in one spot, under a roof, in a heated space, and with one of Nancy's cinnamon rolls and a cup of coffee! Teresa, I have a really good cranberry walnut bread recipe. Yesterday I couldn't find it and nearly panicked! I'll post it a little later.

Rusty, it will be a while before I consider myself good enough to play at the market or anywhere outside my own home! And yes, the bread was a yeast bread. I think that is the first time I have ever had a fruit and nut bread used as a sandwich, but it was yummy.....not very sweet at all.

Great news that you have your dulcimer. I'll bet you'll be playing it at the market before you know it - not necessarily because you'll think you are at concert level, but because hey, there must be a few quiet boring minutes when no one is at your table that you could use to sneak in a little practice.

Cranberry Walnut Bread sounds really good, I've made the recipe from Rose Levy Beranbaum's website and it was good and not really sweet, about a tablespoon of sugar and some whole wheat flour.

Was the bread made with fresh cranberries or dried ones? It sounds like a dessert bread to me (or coffee cake), even though you said it was not very sweet. I would use it to make French toast instead of a sandwich.

I am also a fan of dulcimer music! It might help your business get more attention.

I asked about the bread and it was made with dried cranberries - they may have been plumped a bit in warm water. This bread would make great French toast, but it wasn't really sweet or fruity/nutty. It was very good with the chicken salad and I enjoyed it toasted with butter this morning with my scrambled egg and bacon.

Teresa, congratulations on the dulcimer. May many years of enjoyment be yours.

Years ago, at a little sidewalk cafe on Newbury Street in Boston we had a turkey sandwich with stuffing & cranberry relish on a bread similar to the Recipe4Living recipe. It was delicious. I'm sure I would love it with chicken salad.

I did think about that.....after I left to come home! I also recommended the bakery on a dulcimer forum so maybe they will get some future business. It's the kind of small town bakery you'd like to see succeed.

It seems like a natural for chicken salad.
The very best chicken salads
(in my opinion, anyway)
Have fruit in them,
So why not in the bread ! !
