Exterior Makeover for 1980's Colonial - Ideas Needed!
Comments (5)Overall, it s a lovely house. I find nothing wrong with the windows and would keep them. Adding new garage doors with windows would seem too busy a look, competing with all other windows on the front of the house, so I would keep them as is. Don't make them more fancy than the rest of the house. The eye should go to the front door. I love the picture you posted for a new front door and is a nice, easy and generally not too costly way to make a quick update. My preference is always to have a roof over the front door, and I would work with an architect who could come up with some ideas for that. And the stairs need a handrail. Yes, wait to see what colors would go with the roof, the blue is pretty but perhaps the owner would prefer a more sublte color. Good luck!...See MoreIdeas for minor renovations to my 1980s colonial?
Comments (15)I would replace your front door with something more unique and less traditional. Maybe a full light with a funky glass design. And lose that storm door! Replace your dated lighting with something more current. Perhaps replace light post with bubbling rock with a light in it? All your windows have the fake mullions except the big glass of your bay window and I find that looks odd. Either add fake mullions to that window or remove the fakes from the rest of your windows. Your garden plantings are on the verge of becoming overgrown, especially the shrub on left of pic. Your bay window and porch are becoming hidden so I would do some major thinning. I also find your shutters are too narrow, replace with wider panelled shutters and keep same colour. You could also funk up your bay window by replacing asphalt roof with a metal roof. I was thinking copper but I'm not sure the colour would work with your house....See MoreUpdate a 1980's Split Level Home on a very limited budget
Comments (6)Its hard to tell by your pictures, which are a bit blurry and a bit small, but, is that exterior stained? If so, I would get it cleaned and a fresh coat of stain, since I do like the colors on there right now. I am the exception here, I guess, because, I do think those reddish shutters add a lot to the house. The landscaping could use a bit of work, but, all in all, it looks to be a very nice house....See MoreI need ideas on updating my 1980s colonial
Comments (11)regarding the front, I'd pull out those round shrubs near the garage and the home since they do nothing visually for the home. You could change the garage doors to something more up to date, along w/the front door and removing the shutters. I'd do black windows. Let me show you a slew of pictures that give you ideas of colors and styles. (and don't be too quick to shoot down painting the brick. Romabio is a wonderful product w/almost no upkeep) not quite the same as yours, but I like the garage doors, the vertical siding, black windows and the addition of wood siding (you could do composite) if you painted the brick white it could look like this photoshopped these doors so you can see. Landscaping and a new driveway will have a huge impact on the overall look I love the after shot on this one. very modern looking. if you did your driveway and landscaping like this, along w/the black windows, black accents, dark garage door, a new front door and the added wood accents, it would look so much better here's another split that got a makeover. same color roof like you have. Consider doing some type of path down the middle of the grass. Notice all of the little details on this after photo. I love this one too. they got rid of the shutters, got black windows, new porch overhang w/the wood, wood posts, gray siding, modern doors/lights/address, and of course the landscaping similar splits w/a more modern redo. similar house like yours w/the brick. gray siding, updated landscaping. although the brick is painted in this one, you don't have to do it. (I like it better but it's up to you) Medium gray siding, black windows, new front door, wood garage door and upgraded lights. and landscaping. around back, the dark siding and black windows would loo like this. do a composite wood deck, or add some type of wood to warm up the darker, black tones very similar style hosue to yours, switched over to farmhouse style. they did paint the brick w/Romabio on this one do you like the green? this color siding w/your red brick would work. I'd still get a new door and landscaping and do the walkway down the middle. if you want a porch overhang, this one is nice. I wouldn't use the shutters...See Moredspen
