Hey all!

Its time to kick off another weekend. We are starting off with car shopping tonight. DH finally found something that he likes so we are going to get it at the dealer tonight. It is a Vibe that is a few years old, but still in great shape so hopefully our car issues will be behind us soon.

Tomorrow our dear friends are having their annual Leisure Olympics and we are really looking forward to it. I'm not sure of all the events, but I know Baggo, Bocci and Beer Pong are listed near the top. It is going to be warm and humid, so I think I will sign up for Beer Pong twice LOL!

Sunday is Pool-A-Palooza at our pool. We will be grilling dogs & burgers and serving lots of "water ice" to the crowds. The kids will be playing pool games and non-pool games with prizes for everyone.

Wow, Alexa, you do summer right! Sounds like a fun weekend at your neck o' the woods.
I am still in Ct, at our summer cottage. Lots of kayaking, walking, biking and reading. Summer meals are light and easy (did I mention my husband only visits for a weekend or two?) Finally going clamming today as the beds have been closed for ages due to rain. Clinking my glass of water taken from the community pump here.

I have a friend in one of the historic homes in Mystic, CT who just finished remodeling their patio... we're celebrating with steak on the grill and libations on the patio!

Hi everyone, Well, I am double posting this in 2 forums - I hope nobody minds. As promised, here I am posting about what in the world I've been doing all summer while traveling to & fro Wisconsin. As some of you already know, I work with fish-eating birds: cormorants, pelicans, herons, egrets, gulls, wood storks, etc. My husband and I have been working in Wisconsin for the past 3 years, but we also regularly work in Mississippi, Alabama, Arkansas, Michigan, Ontario, and a few other places. Yes, we are a husband + wife team, working together out of the same office. Many people are surprised that we work together, but it is great. We make a fantastic team, and are often at our best under challenging field conditions. Great minds think alike, and being dear friends & in love sure helps too. (ok, enough with the mushy stuff). So now for a few photos from the vegetation surveys we did this month. Background: We are working on remote islands in Lake Michigan, around the Door Co. Peninsula area. All the islands have nesting double-crested cormorants and herring gulls. Some also have nesting Am. white pelicans and Canada geese. Back in April, we put up some 6 ft x 6 ft pens (we call them exclosures) to exclude the cormorants because they damage vegetation with their nesting activities (too much POOP!). So then we went back in August to catalog everything that grew in the pens, by plant species, and weighed it to also determine biomass. That meant breaking out the field guides, studying up on botany and the flora of Wisconsin, and bringing the plant presses for species we couldn't identify on the island. We compareed the exclosure plots to some "control" plots, which had nothing but 4 wooden stakes at the corners. We had 45 plots to do on 3 islands, plus another 3 islands down by the city of Green Bay that we did simple vegetation surveys on (no pens). It was alot of work, but very interesting. The bottom line: there are lots of nonnative species on those islands, like motherwort, catnip, pigweed, common mallow, stinging nettle and sow thistle. The native vegetation was primarily lambsquarter and smartweed species. Almost done clipping this 1-meter plot: Looking for small plants beneath the lambsquarter The finished, sampled 1-meter subplot Who would even know what this was?!?! I saved seeds to winter sow and see if I can't figure it out. The very last veg plot to measure. You can tell, because we look so happy! A friend found crawling across the plant press The stinging nettle I hacked through to make us a nice trail to get to the center of the island. At least its not poison ivy! Ok, that's all for now. LIFER HERE!!!! I was a bit nervous about my weigh in. At my CURVES pre weigh in I was up~~WW's scales weigh less but I still had gained 1.5 pounds on the WW's scales as compared to last Friday. BUT it was still less than my goal weight so I will not beat myself up for that!! I went into this just wanting to get anywhere under 150, so 143.5 is not bad!! I did not get another charm for my key chain, they give you a lifer memebership card:( I wanted a charm LOL!! But, my WW's leader gave me flowers:) I was so surprised and a very nice framed quote to help you stay on task:) She really is a sweatheart! I know she has to pay for them herself, so that makes it extra special. She had me come up and tell everyone what I liked about the plan and what I did that helped me make it work:) I do Core and she had me talk about why I chose that since most folks do not do it. I thought I was done and she said NO there is one more thing you did that worked best for you?? I could not think of it and the other gals were trying to help me think too:) Finally she says 'you never missed a meeting' YES!! That is true and it did help alot! She wanted the others to know how important that is:) As I was leaving I went to chat with the receptionist (a man who has lost 66lbs) he told me I should apply for a job with WW's, the leader talked to me about that too~~~I would maybe do the weigh ins (receptionist). But, never a leader you have to know too much:) I wonder how much they pay and how often you do it? I already have a 10-2 job during the school year do I want more?? Not really but then I thought maybe that would be good for me to help keep my weight off. What do you think?? It was 107 here yesterday and is going to be hotter today how can that be?????? WC what is it like up in your area??? I am going to be in Frisco in a couple of weeks and up in Santa Cruz also. Is it going to be cooler for me?? I want it alot cooler???? WC have you ever been to Half Moon Bay?? I am reading a book that part of it takes place there?? I think I will have my DH drive through it just so I can say I was there:)

Good early morning. BJ, I meant to tell you that I also hope everthing works out for the best with Baby V and he ends up in the most qualified and caring hands, although he couldn't ask for better ones than yours. Talk about heroes - you and your family are definitely role models for sharing your home and love. I love coming here. I've gotten to the point where I don't want to read the news or gossip columns online or on tv, or see where the latest tropical wave is off of Africa (I'll prepare soon enough, I know the drill.) I know that none of our lives are perfect here, but it's such a great place to come and share our celebrations and sadness. Hope I'm not being too corny - blame it on the early hour - ha. Milkdud, what is a rebounder - is it like a trampoline? I need to find something that will firm up my middle section - legs and my upper body are improving, but the jelly belly and thighs could definitely use some extra toning. (lovely description, huh.) Going to walk in a few minutes and then having lunch with new neighbors I have met since starting my exercise routine. Just an added perk. I couldn't find my Weight Watchers one point chocolate cakes, so I bought some No Pudge chocolate brownie mix, where you just add the no-fat vanilla yogurt. All I could find was the plain, so I added some vanilla extract, per the instructions. OMG, were they good. I had one brownie for two points (my husband ate 3!) I didn't tell him until afterwards that the secret ingredient was yogurt, or he never would have come near them. I've never cooked with yogurt before, but I still have large container of it, so if y'all have any recipes to share, please let me know. Enjoy your day. I hope it's a good one for everyone. Jan

Happy Friday Friends! May, great movie! I know you and the boys will love it. Sharon, OMG you have a TON of tomatoes! Are you making chile sauce from all of them or will some be canned in other manners? I can;t even imagine making so many batches of chile sauce in a row..... Mom - Many thanks to your DS and to you for raising such a great kid. We are all in debt. Duane - good luck. It sounds like the attack of the killer tomatoes! Jessy - good luck indeed! I helped with the food for the combines 18th B-day/graduation party earlier this summer.. OMG what an ordeal! Claire - good luck with the staining David! Water balloons! OMG Now I knwo what will be the perfect ending to our first annual "smokefest" this Labor Day weekend. I am going to bombard the entire party with water balloons! That is BRILLIANT!!!!! Everyone else have a great weekend... you deserve it! We have another action packed weekend - today was lunch with a GF and her kids, that turned into afternoon cocktails at my house while we watched our 11-12 yo Little League Team destroy another team in the semis to move into the Mid-Atlantic finals to be held on Monday night (on ESPN2 against Toms River, NJ who we beat by 1 in the regular season) It was so great to see our boys win by 10 in the 4th inning (Mercy rule) and move on to the finals. Tomorrow is another friends Family Olympics - basically an afternoon of Minute to Win It type challenges with gag gifts for prizes. In actuality, an excuse to eat and drink too much while watching other make complete fools of themselves. I chose wisely and will be an "official judge" this year so I can be pretty sure there will be no incriminating evidence on Youtube. Sunday is our towns first annual Musicfest. There will be 15 live bands, food vendors, beer & wine, crafts and other stuff on this big farm outside of town..... we"ll see how that goes. Hope everyone has a wonderful and safe weekend! Alexa

wow, lots of summer-y stuff going on this weekend. It's actually supposed to hit 90 on Sunday here, the first time this summer.

Alexa, my ex has a Vibe with somewhere over 200,000 miles on it and it's still running well. No major repairs at all and he says it has a lot of hauling space in the back, he uses it to haul stock for the store, and loves it.

I've never played Baggo, Bocci OR Beer Pong, LOL, how do you know if you WIN at Beer Pong? (grin)

Jojo, that sounds like a perfect summer vacation to me.

I'm leaving work tonight and driving to Elery's, so after that 3 hour drive, I'll be whipped, we won't do anything.

Tomorrow is his Granddaughter's birthday party, she's 4, so I baked the cookies on the Royal Icing thread, and we'll spend a couple of hours there, then we're driving in to Ann Arbor to Trader Joe's. Nope, I don't need anything except those flax seed chips that I like so well, but it'll be a nice break. He's got fondue planned for Saturday night, I've only done chocolate fondue so we're doing shrimp and scallops.

Sunday I drive home, it'll be hot, so hopefully I'll get home in the early afternoon and Amanda can bring the kids over to swim.

That'll be it, I'll hit the decks running Monday, I'll have to pick and can beans and the beets need to be made into pickled beets and I want to make some sweet relish. Oh, and that working for a living is interfering with my gardening, canning and partying. Sheesh.

Jojo, enjoy and relax! We just returned home from a 9 day vacation to Washington. We were too busy to read much, neither of us finished a book, but we did have a blast-- So much to see and do!

Annie- make sure to tell Elery "Hi" from me and if they're good, please share the shrimp and Scallop fondue recipes! How fun that you and Elery both have little granddaughters!

Today will include checking on my parents, my MIL and doing some marketing. Nothing big planned for the weekend. I want to hang with the grands and DD for a bit and we'll probably have dinner with friends on Sat or Sun. Dinner tonight will be simple, we both ate too well on this trip and so I'll be clinking tonight with some chilled Perrier!

We're having a cool, sunny, dry day here in NH. It actually feels more like mid-Sept. than August. That is fine with me, except that it seems we missed summer completely! Only the raspberries I picked yesterday are testimony that it happened.

Tomorrow DD's best friend is getting married so we are taking GD Priscilla for the day and through the evening. DD & SIL will join us here at the lake tomorrow night & spend Sunday w/us. We'll be watching their dog, as well as the baby, so we'll have our hands full. Priscilla is already 4 mths. old and this will be our 1st all-day babysitting stint.

That is all that is planned. But here at the lake, in summertime, we never know who will drop by.

Clinking with my Diet Coke here!

As usual, I was ready for the weekend about Tuesday, so I'm happy it's finally here! No big plans for the weekend, but I'll probably be working on the last few decisions for my kitchen remodel. I sent the plans to my uncle/cabinet maker a couple weeks ago and he's just about ready to start cutting wood. Guess I'd better get going on picking out a backsplash and a sink now! Oops.

Started painting the master bath on my birthday (Wednesday). From creamy white to medium teal. Three days of work yields a beautiful bath--the tile is white/taupe/gray and the tile stands out! We have a bit more to do.

Publix chicken tenders that were fried with light great breading. Tried out the new range with potato wedges using convection (also warmed up the chicken) and a light red wine. Ahhh-- the sinuses are toast with 3 days of paint but we have made progress!

Like I mentioned work has been a challenge as of late but it is great to check in here tonight. Tax free weekend here for shopping but I will pass on that one and head to the farmers market againg for more canning produce. Annie's salsa and pickled watermelon rind this go around. Have some peeps coming over tomorrow to hang by the pool and chill out and cook something on the grill.

Clinking with a cold one tonight....have a great weekend everyone! Time to move the hose again...watering everything here tonight.
