Did you pay more for a cabinet for the microwave drawer?

I'm hoping MW drawer owners can help. We ordered semicustom cabinets and installed a MW drawer in our island. My KD did not ask for the specs for my Sharp microwave drawer, even though I had purchased it, so he left a large opening, with a smaller drawer below it, in my island.

He now wants to charge me $400 to make the space for the MW drawer the appropriate size. He said it would have cost $400 even if he had the specs. This does NOT make sense to me. I think he would have ordered a larger drawer and put a filler around it the open space, which doesn't seem like it would cost $400.. Did it cost you more for a cabinet for your microwave drawer or did it fit in a space similar to a built in microwave? I feel like he is charging me for his mistake, but I am not sure.

BTW, the electrician is actually installing the MWdrawer.

Our MW drawer cabinet is one of the few cabinets that are Omega Custom (most of the rest are Omega Dynasty/semi-custom). Yes, it had to be custom made to fit the MW drawer. This was back in 2007/2008. While I would think by now the semi-custom lines would be including cabinets for MW drawers, it sounds like they do not.

So, in answer to your question, yes, we did have to pay more...$414.39 more.

Our 30" cabinet for our 3-drawer cabinet holding the Warming Drawer (top drawer + WD + bottom drawer) was: $540.25
Our 31" cabinet for our 2-drawer MW drawer (MW + bottom drawer) was: $954.64

MW Drawer Cabinet:

[On the plus side, b/c it is custom, the interior of the cabinet is finished to match the outside so if we ever wanted to replace it w/a "regular" MW we probably could...if we could find one to fit in the alcove. But, to be honest, I would never want one in an alcove under the counter...too low!]

I should mention the price comparison above is not completely apples-to-apples. It's more like oranges-to-tangerines!

The Custom cabinet includes the finished interior while the Dynasty cabinet does not. OTOH, the Dynasty cabinet has 3 drawers, while the Custom cabinet has only 2 drawers. Finally, the Custom cabinet is 31" wide, while the Dynasty cabinet is 30".

That being said, I think it gives you a good idea of the price difference.

We were up at 4 this morning and went to bed about 1 last night. I shouldn't be up now. Anyway, I really do know how to spell and the difference between "their" and "there" -- I am just to tired to think or proof what I was reading. I guess that means I have wound down and can go to bed now. LOL There are two drawer sizes and their measurements are the same as the cabinet size they require. Goodnight.

I'll chime in here. I have had mine in use about 7 1/2 years. They were brand new when we started looking and planning and I had a hard time the the price tag. As it turned out, using the drawer solved a lot of layout issues so we paid the $6-700 it was then, realized it was our east expensive built-in appliance, Sharp makes the best microwave ovens, and we figured the cost should go down by the time we might have to replace it and worst case we could put a small shelf unit in the space. Well, the cost hasn't gone down, I'm sorry to say, but I am not looking to replace it either. When I do, it will be with another drawer. I was pleased with how well we liked using it, found it had settings I didn't know it had and they worked well for us, and the keep warm setting gives me a second warming drawer for the craziest of times (actually used both for Thanksgiving one year when one guest was over an hour late). The drawer opening is so much better than having to bend down to see the flat front of a shelf unit or to reach in under your counter. Not having to lift out a steaming dish, set it down, stir and lift it back is so much easier. I'm tall and have bad discs in my neck, so that matters to me more than our other family members, but I don't think they'd want to change either. I'm coming up on 8 years in and I'm not going back. Point well taken about the cost of a micro plus trim kit of a built-in version that may not need the trim kit. And the only appliance you might get for less is a DW if you go basic. For a better, quieter model, you'll be in the same price range.

My DH gave me this from a wood web site.... I must give them and him all the credit. From contributor L: Here is my solution to the "wasted space" in the corner issue - forget about it! Here is why: Suppose you just make that space in the corner "dead." Now, compare that to a lazy susan - first I have to take away 12" of good, usable, direct access cabinetry from each side. Accounting for 2" fillers, that is a loss of 10" on each face, or 20" total. 20" times the interior depth of 23" is 460 sq.in. So that is a net loss of 3.19 sq.ft. of horizontal interior surface. Then I put a 32" pie-cut susan in there and gain back 603 sq.in* - a net gain of only 143 sq.in. or 1 sq.ft. Since you have 2 levels, that is a net gain of 2 sq.ft. so far - and then you lose 20"** of top drawers, since most of us leave the top drawers out to improve access to the lazy susan. That is an additional net loss of 20"x 22"= 440 sq.in. or 3 sq.ft. So, to sum it up, with a lazy susan you loose 1 sq.ft. of storage space compared to a dead corner. Plus you just spent a bunch of the customer's money for that lazy susan. from woodweb I ditched the susans and put in 2 drawer banks. on the opposing "corner" we put a 15" cab with door/ drawer on top, a shelf in the "dreaded dead spot" to store the turkey pan, huge gumbo pot and such. I could put in "a pull out something" or other just as long as I could get to the seasonal stuff tucked back there. Makes it much more usable.

Since mine is already installed, I'm not sure I see the return on effort to get a new unit, even if it's pretty easy to swap out (it is). Plus, I actually like the unit in all other respects so far. My original intent here was to see if anybody has any ideas about PROTECTION other than satin poly -- maybe I could turn the screws on Sharp if I found a kitchen appliance product manager. Just had another idea. Could try using some of that clear 3M film used to protect car bumpers. I think it's easily removed (would need to test that, though I guess in 3 years it could be harder to remove and take paint with it -- repainting a little bit of cabinetry down the road is not end of world). Probably glossier than most cabinet finishes (my cabinets are more satin finish) but below the microwave may not be too visible.

I already paid for an opening for the MWdrawer and a "cabinet" drawer below it.
Since the opening was too large, he's charging me $400 to adjust the size to make it fit. I was just curious if he had done it right the first time, if it would cost $400. Judging from your response, it kind of sounds like it may be a "reasonable" charge. I'm so confused!!

There are very detailed instructions on the Sharpe website showing how to modify standard cabinets to accommodate the microdrawers. I sell Dynasty cabinets and typically give my customers the option between a "custom" cabinet with an exact opening or a standard cabinet to be modified after the fact. Most choose the standard cabinet. It is very simple to modify. $400 (in my opinion) is excessive.
