I'm sure its been discussed at great length - maybe I am searching on the wrong wording? I've tried all sorts of variations of "30" deep counters" but don't get anything very informative.

I designed in deeper counters along my oven/cooktop wall. The base cabinets are 28 inches deep, the drawer/door faces are 3/4", the counters overhang the drawers by 3/4" and therefore are 29 1/2 inches deep. I decided to make the uppers 15 inches deep.

If you are not having custom cabinets made one option that many people use is to install the base cabinets about 4 inches out from the wall, and then have the countertop go all the way to the wall.

One thing to make sure of, if you do go with deeper custom cabinets, make sure the cabinetmaker also builds deeper drawer boxes.

I don't have a corner, but I do have a 24 inch deep angled peninsula cabinet coming out from the end of the run of 30" cabinets, and I don't think it looks lop-sided. Maybe because the peninsula has an extra-wide countertop with an overhang for seating.

My whole baking area is 30" deep with a soapstone counter and a run of drawers beneath. I have full expension. I love the depth and am so glad I did it this way. The uppers are 15" deep and it does make a huge difference in storage. I use a step stool as all my cabs are HIGH. Pics in FKB under trailrunner.

I think there IS a category in the FKB for deep cabinets.

Except for losing some floor space and people thinking you're weird when they hear it for the first time, I can't think of any drawbacks. Well, one--I'm planning it for half of my kitchen and I think I'll need undercabinet lighting where I have deep uppers. I wouldn't need it otherwise. But I can handle that.

It may cost a bit more dealing with counters (mine will have to go behind the stove, which has advantages but requires more thinking for fabrication) but the cabinet shops I'm considering don't charge much extra for the cabs themselves. As one guy put it, as long as your tops and bottoms add up to 48" of plywood or less, not much difference to them.

I have had 30" deep counters in a previous home (alas, there was not enough room to make it work in our new kitchen) and the extra workspace is great! Lots of room to push ingredients and prep bowls out of the way as you work or to keep appliances on the counter, and you can make a standard size fridge look built in. 15" wall cabinets are a good idea with this arrangement. Regarding the actual base cabinet depth, if you have lots of drawers and/or pullouts, be sure to use all of the depth. Alternatively, some people put dead space behind 24" cabinets and use it for plumbing or electrical.

I did this for one length of wall. The only thing I'd mention is that the extra depth of any counters will steal a couple of inches of cabinetry from any perpendicular runs (and obviously, any walkways/aisles). It wasn't immediately clear to me when I thought of deep countertops. (However, I definitely wanted the deep countertop because I wasn't getting an island.)

I love my 30" deep counters and 15" uppers. I didn't use 30" all over, just near the main sink. However, my cabinet guy didn't take advantage of the full depth. I wish I would have been more clear when we wrote out the specifications. Fortunately, we bought a really quiet dishwasher, but we certainly could have taken advantage of the extra space by adding insulation behind it since that wall is shared by the family room. I was initially going with solid surface for the countertops, but because it comes in 50" widths, I would have had to buy extra for my kitchen. I opted for granite instead since the depth didn't matter with the larger stone slabs.

I am the primary user of my home kitchen. I also owned a cabinet shop years ago. When I rebuilt my kitchen, I installed 30" deep base cabinets with various size drawers instead of doors with shelves. I also installed 15" uppers that went to the ceiling eliminating the kitchen sofit, [remember an extra shelf or two with this add space]. I also ran florescent lighting below the cabinets on its own off/on switch. The receptacles I installed were all 4 and 6 gang plugs with additional receptacles for 2 dishwashers, 1 Hot Water maker, 1 water purifier, 1 One-horse Garbage Disposal, 1 trash Compactor. It is a great set up for someone who likes to spend time in the kitchen.
