Comments (1)I increased my uppers depth by the exact amount I increased the lowers. (And yeah, it's 30 plus whatever the counters are.) This way, I can reach exactly what I could reach with standard depths. And more if I stand on something. :) I can reach everything on the bottom shelf of my 18" deep uppers, and most of the second shelf, and even the front of the third shelf. Dunno/don't care what's on the top shelf. :) I'm 5'1". I think the 18" uppers are almost as great as the 30" drawers. And the 31" counters are nice too. (Make yours 31.5". Comments (33)We have made a niche in wallboard behind range but haven't finished it yet. Range is an older model freestanding 30 inch range. Just want to say that I took a measuring tape to Sears before we made niche and found that some models of freestanding ranges were almost 48 inches high at the back. You will want to plan for that if you're putting in a niche above a range unless it's one of the ones with controls at front. Also, if you have upper cupboards flanking the range you will find it hard to exactly position that niche between them if the cupboards are not installed, but that's the best time to access the space. We have some messing about to do in correcting the position now that hood, range, and cupboards are in place. Our niche is not spacious--esp. because we are close to the hood mfg recommendation for position above range, which doesn't leave a lot of niche room; a large bottle of oil or a wine bottle won't fit. Nevertheless, I'm really happy with the unfinished niche and am shamelessly using the top of the range back as a second tier for more items I use when at range--vinegars, salts, pepper grinder, garlic, &c. Don't plan to line a niche with thick tiles; choose something thin. Although you might think that a wall has 6 inches of depth to offer you, it doesn't work that way, esp. if you build the niche of wallboard as DH did. Paint's the thinnest thing for lining a niche, I think. But if you have 30 inch deep countertops, you could do all kinds of creative things with a niche in that space behind the range--how about a deep lip on the niche? You could put a real vase there! And the niche could be 3 inches plus the inside of the wall--a really capacious thing! Comments (21)You mean it'll be a pony wall at the R end of the FP? The prep sink would work there on the kit side. From Sena's LO there'd be about 4' of prep space between it and the stove. I'd still use a shallow pantry on the wall of the laundry room at the end. (that'd also eliminate the deep lower corner cabinet area problem) I'd put in an EZreach upper cab on that corner to butt up to the shallow pantry. uppers usually run about 15" deep, don't they? I'd want a long area of prep space on the other side too instead of a deep pantry. Having the window side not so deep by the door and shallow on the stove side would make it more open at the doorway. Easier to see little ones coming in too. Having a prep area on both sides would be great when you have help in the kitchen by family/friends. On the window side, how about the fridge next to the dw? You could even move the sink/dw to the L maybe another foot - that'd give maybe 3' or so to the R of the fridge for the desk area. (before the doorway to the sunroom) Try putting this in the layout/or 3d pic and post here so we can see how it looks. I like the idea of the 6' between counters when a number of people will be working in that area - and possibly someone going out or coming in that laundry area door. Less congestion. The wall ovens - those are good for those who have problems bending down to the oven on a stove. Really tall people, those with a bad back... or those who often use oven and stove top at the same time. Many don't like standing at the stove top with the heat of the oven so close to them. I'd love to have one but I so seldom use the oven, it doesn't seem worth it for me. I probably don't use the oven 2x a month. Comments (6)Being the super cautious guy that I am, and knowing that base cabinets are designed to be screwed to the wall, I would probably build out a ledger to 6" at the top of the cabinets and screw a cleat to the floor 6" out to support the bottom of the cabinets. Probably not necessary, but simple to do and it might save problem later on if someone give the boxes a good kick. But, why not just use 30" deep cabinets. They are no harder to build than 24" deep cabinets and provide 25% more storage -- always welcome in a kitchen. Here's a row of 30" cabinet we built for a customer. Even with 12" appliance garages, there is still 19" of working space on the countertop, which is a useful amount of space. The deeper drawers are also very handy....See Morebob_cville
