Since I have young grandchildren, the only movies I ever see are superheroes, computerized graphics effects, etc. and I am STARVED for something I can actually sit for more than 10 minutes and watch. Thank you. The only movie about food that I can remember off the top of my head was "Fatso" - not a great one but the one scene where all those guys get together in a group therapy session to combat their food addictions turns into this gigantic cooking/eating orgy that is so hilarious and so true.

Do you mean 'The Hundred-Foot Journey' that was just released? I saw an ad for it on TV the other day and definitely want to see it! :)

Edit: pitiful. I just did a search and the nearest theater showing it is 135 miles away!!! :p

The food is gorgeous, but they don't even know the difference between mayonnaise and hollandaise (note the olive oil drizzling into the "hollandaise").

"Babette's Feast"--now there's a food movie (although nothing would get me to eat cailles en sarcophage).

Has anyone seen Chef? It came out a couple of months ago and got great reviews.

Just saw Hundred Foot Journey last night and we both loved it. I asked DH if he thought we might evolve into a foodie movie genre. At least our collection will. ;)

I have seen Chef and loved it too. Plan to order the DVD (being released Sept. 20th -- yes, I have already checked it out).

Tortilla Soup is another great one.

Seems like I am forgetting something -- Ratatouille is a good movie, but not sure if it fits the genre.

I read the 100 foot journey and the book is so much better than the movie. Much more in depth in the cooking and presentation of food. Also, the movie left out a lot.

Another friend recommended Chef, but I haven't heard of it, nor seen any previews.

Our favorite is Tampopo, in Japanese. Lots of side vignettes, but at heart a 'Ramen' Western. Best scene is a company lunch....

Some friends are coming for dinner tmrw to tell us about their camping trip to the San Juan Islands. I'm feeling inspired to make boeuf bourguignon and chicken tikka masala, in honor of the movie.

Boeuf bourguignon because it features at one point in the movie, but with some Indian spices I think - HELP, I didn't catch what they were, anyone have the book and willing to look it up? Assuming that scene was in the book. [edit - never mind, found it, see below]

Chicken tikka masala because my repertoire of Indian dishes is, well, Mickey Mouse could count all of it without needing any toes. Did he even have toes? I don't think Mickey ever went barefoot?

I have an idea. Suppose we made some dishes from our favorite foodie movies?

Another vote for 'Babette's Feast' - my husband's favorite movie.

It's not a food movie per se, but the protagonist in 'Dona Flor and her Two Husbands' runs a cooking school and there are some cooking scenes in it.

Super corny movie that I happen to love, about and Italian family in the strip district in Pittsburgh near where I used to live and go--"A Wedding for Bella." Scott Baio plays a stock broker by day, biscotti maker by night. Need I say more?? :)

A while ago we watched One hundred foot journey; twice. We both just love it. Hubby is quite into food movies now, (Julie and Julia is another favourite).

So we watched Ratatouille (adorable), and just this weekend Chef, and No Reservations. (very much liked them both)

I tried watching Babette's Feast but they were Subtitles. Can it be seen in English?

I've only seen it in subtitles.

I wasn't sure if that was the norm......the movie with subtitles. I've never watched anything with subs. :-) It obviously doesn't detract from the movie, as it's been recommended so highly.

Yeah, with well-done dubbing sometimes you can't even be sure that a movie wasn't in English to begin with, but the dubbing for Babette's Feast isn't very good.

Just watched "Today's Special" on Netflix with Asif Mandvi and believe it or not, Madhur Jaffrey. It was extremely formulaic but still fun to see the execution, which was pretty good. Some good albeit superficial odes to Indian cooking, but also an interesting take on the Muslim immigrant experience and also family dynamics, that was some of the more interesting parts.

I just ordered the book One Hundred Foot Journey from the library. I'll see if I like it better than the movie.

We watched "A Year on Provence" on Sunday. OMG, so good!!! It's a true story which made it even better! Youtube has it in 4 segments, in 3 month blocks.

Fantastic series...love John Thaw (Inspector Morse, if you want to see more of his acting).

I've watched many a subtitled movie and much prefer it over dubbing. Try it. It doesn't take but a minute or so to get into the story and forget you're even reading the subtitles. Of course, it helps if it's a good movie, and most of the foreign movies that make it to the library are good movies. The only time subtitles bug me is if they use the wrong color of print against the background and it's hard to see, or if they go by too fast. That doesn't happen all that often, though. The only other problem with subtitles is you can't multitask while watching the movie. You have to pay attention. (Sometimes I like to cross stitch while watching tv.)

I'm going to look for Year in Provence, but I know it will make me want to pick up and move.

I loved Ratatouille too! If you liked No Reservations I'll think you'll really like the original, Mostly Martha. I highly recommend it!
