TGIF for 8-3-07!

while i'm never late for work, appointments or anything sort of related, i seem to be perennially late on this forum! but not today. happy end of the week to all of you!

i am always happy to spend my time off in our little cottage by ourselves, but we are heading back to ny (dad and my sister are still there) so this week will be different for us. but there have been more than a couple of last-minute changes and if things work out right, i expect i might be lucky enough to kick off the "virtual dinner" a little early! (and with any luck, there will be film at 11.) best wishes to all of you!

TGIF San and a safe trip to you. I'm hoping you got some rest!

And a happy weekend to all the rest of you. I'm clinking with my coffee.

Mental note: never go to bed right after eating salsa & chips. Bad, bad, bad, bad, bad.

So, it's Friday. Yay! That means it's 'payday' and I get my unemployment check. Yep, I'm livin' the "dream".

Two more weeks until culinary school begins. I'm psyched and ready.

I baked Mom a birthday cake yesterday. White cake with a lemon curd filling with buttercream frosting topped with coconut. She loved it.

Today - no plans except to pay bills and buy groceries. And then I'm broke again. Yep, I'm livin' the dream, I tell ya.

San, enjoy the cottage and I will see you at the dinner party. It is a long weekend here in Canada (YIPEEE). Besides the virtual dinner, we are emptying out our 2 car garage that has acted like a big storage shed (read: storing a ton of cr*p) in preparation of taking it down. That and some relaxing is on the agenda for the next 3 days.

Those plugs are actually quite good for the lawn. They dry out, and spread out, providing a thin layer of 'new' dirt, that's filled with air in the pores, and nutrients, now on the surface, that used to be trapped three inches down. Their rotting (I'm sorry, I meant to say 'naturally decomposing') process, while it might take a while, will be complete in a couple of weeks. The benefits of that process will be on the surface for a year or more. Now lets talk about the holes in the ground (you know, where the cores used to be?). Those are also very good for the lawn. When you mulch mow (and I hope you do), some organic material will fall into the holes. Now you have organic material a few inches deep, which is good. And some loose soil will fall in, not the compacted stuff you used to have. All around, a great improvement. You should consider having those guys come do it every year. Pick fall, or pick spring, but once a year would be great for that lawn.

Good thing, I've been fixing fence. Nancy, don't work too hard, those tourists will work you hard soon enough! Maggie, it does hurt, doesn't it? I got the heating bill a week ago, it's higher than the last one. Sigh. And I keep the heat at 55 when I'm home, 50 when I'm not, still costs me $200+ a month. It sucks. I'm sorry. Joanne, I was wondering how those driving lessons were going, it sounds like you'll be driving anywhere you want to go pretty darned soon. Good for you! Katie, my employee finished her last day today, she got another job. Now I have to interview, hire and train a new employee which is a pain in the a**. Ah well, it's worth it. At least she never "forgot" to come to work, like yours did!!! This weekend? Let's see, it started today, Elery was here and I took the day off. We went fishing for steelhead this morning, I got a fish but it broke my pole and got away, lure, pole and all. Darn it. Afternoon was a trip to the doc, I've been having some "issues" and today got a biopsy done. Results in 5 days. Right now I feel like cr*p, so I'm just hanging around, drinking a cup of hot tea. Tomorrow too, I think, although I may break down and bake something. Sunday is some more fence repair. Nothing exciting, just normal stuff. Annie

Stacie, it's NEVER good to hide things, that's a strain in itself. Both parties should suffer equally with financial issues, I think! Maggie, good luck with that room. I HATE painting. Be careful with the fumes, remember you have to take care of that bean. duane, I moved into my house 23 years ago and swore never again. It IS the only way to truly clean house, though. Oh, and happy birthday on Thursday! Lyndaluu, enjoy the wedding. TGIF for sure!! I've been on the road all week and I'm glad to be home FINALLY!! Stacie, hot as heck here too...but I LOVE summer so the heat doesn't bother me at all. I'll take it over winter and cold temps.....yuck. Linda, I know for sure you will have a great time with the girls....I still remember when I finally figured out your forum name. Katie, congrats to beating the big "C" pal! I'm still shocked at how you pulled that off at camp last year. I still love you stemless glass tip! Pat, I missed the culinary school thing. Too cool! I'd love to read your blog or at least follow up here on the forum. What a trooper you are with all you've been through the last couple of years. Lindac, I'm thinking you will be there reguardless....I know you love those Grandkids of yours. Stay cool whatever you decide. Nancy, have a great time with your company....sixties would be okay but I'm loving 87 at ten....perfect for skinny dippin'! Gina, you sure are a busy lady. San, glad to hear you had a great time at the cottage. I see you have been up to some other fun too...I'm REALLY jelous over that one. Hot here too, triple digit temps are forcasted through next week here. I've been on the road all week and glad to be home....so is Lucy. I'm headed back to the city tomorrow to take in a little of the PGA...Tiger ended the day very good today. Janet, have a great long weekend, you'll feel great when the garage is done, I have yet to tackle the worst closets that really need going through! Relaxing is good :)

We have a quiet weekend planned. Friends and their kids are coming for the Virtual Dinner. and then we're not doing much of anything on Sunday! Jodie comes back from a three day camp trip upstate to a Dude Ranch! She's having a ball!

San, New York is hot this time of year - stay cool and have fun!

Pat, I hope your chips and salsa "hangover" goes away real soon. How wonderful to be starting Culinary School - you'll be a natural! Your mom's cake sounds delicious.

Janet, we have a 3 car garage and can't fit either car in it because of all the cr*p - it's an embarrassment. Good luck with the cleaning out and enjoy your 3 day weekend.

Carol, you are supposed to be making each and every one of those ice cream recipes on your thread, and all of them this weekend, right? I'll come and help you eat all the ice cream leftovers:-)

To everyone participating in the Virtual Dinner, I'm raising a mug of Oren's Daily Roast Viennese Blend coffee (whew - that's a mouthful)and wishing you fun and happy cooking.

I'll be attending three basketball games and having birthday dinner Saturday eve. Cheers!

Dishes, have fun with the Virtual Dinner. I wanted to join in... guess I'll see how it goes.

Busy weekend here. Kim's DS from NC flies in this morning, I'll pick her up and we plan on hitting the fruit markets on the way back from Traverse City. Tonight we have a special table reserved for dinner, it's on the channel between our lake and Lake Michigan where we will see all the boats coming and going. Tomorrow the other DS and family arrive....there is an art fair just down the road and on the lake...we like to hit it early and are likely to go back several times. Hope to participate in the Virtual Dinner...if it's possible!
Sunday will be a lake day....fun and games. This whole next week will be crazy!

We'll begin clinking around 5pm!

Meeting my sister and another canoer in about an hour for breakfast to finalize canoe trip plans. I checked out some new campsites yesterday....really nice.
Antique fair is in town, I plan to hit that after breakfast. Then it's home to clean the house (which really needs it). Maybe do some baking now that it has finally cooled off and I got a new baking cookbook. Have a stained glass project to finish up this weekend and then I can relax!

Sort of busy weekend here-- retirement party , wake to attend , DH's driving FT in neighboring town's parade , DD called last night to let me know that tomorrow she's dropping off
a mess of pickling cukes so I'll be doing relish ( and maybe some Black Forest Preserves as long as canner's going ) & small craft show Sunday .

A quick TGIF as I head out the door. DH has to run to Spokane to pick up wood and we'll hit Costco. This weekend is party time...a friend has an annual party for the 'Ohana', or extended family. Three days of good food, good drink and good company and it's only a mile down the road.

Tomorrow we're supposed to go to a barbecue...an old friend of DH's will be in town. I'm trying to figure out how to get out of that one gracefully...I can't stand the guy, lol.

Sunday is my first day at home in a couple of weeks, so I hope to hide out and catch up on weeding. It's supposed to cool off to the mid-80's...yay!

I'm headed to the farmer's market after work then....

Date night tonight. DH and I will sit on the front porch with a glass of wine and snap 50# of green beans for canning tomorrow. Pickle making, maybe canning some carrots.......
Yep! Life is good!!

Pat, you have a great attitude! I'm proud of ya. BTW - in NY they don't give unemployment checks anymore - they deposit into a bank account in your name and give you an ATM card - much easier.

Janet, enjoy the long weekend! I don't envy cleaning out the garage! I should be doing closets...

We are still up in the air. I want to go upstate and DH wants to stay here this weekend. We were invited to a block party tomorrow (new friends so that could be nice) and he also has his "Sportsman's" Picnic at the beach on Sunday. Is drinking beer a sport?

Had another sonogram today - the bean is weighing in at 3 pounds 8 ounces and everything looks good:)

KatieC, party down, girlfriend!! All three days! It's going to "cool down to the 80s" here too, and the garden is waiting for me.

Deanna, Elery and I did just that last weekend. This weekend he's working, I'm alone and I'm sure the beans are still growing, somehow.

So, what's in store for me? Tomorrow is the annual PowWow, so I'll go watch the dancers and give my regards. The Travelling Vietnam Memorial Wall is here at the airport and I've volunteered a couple of hours to help there tomorrow. Sunday is the garden, of course, and then I'll have canning to do next week.
