lighted upper cabinets
we only have eight foot ceilings but I LOVE lighted glass upper cabinets. one cabinet maker suggested making a 42" cabinet with the top panel a 4 pane glass. all on one door. would this look weird? he said it would look very similar to the inspiration pic below (which is two separate cabinets.) i guess i just cant work it out in my head how it would look.
would it look dumb with an eight foot ceiling height? how do you think the cabinets would look with one door and top panel just glass. we are doing painted white inset.

Seeking opinions of lighting above main sink
Comments (7)Our layout sounds like it might be somewhat similar. And we definitely will have two relatively large pendants over our 6 1/2 ft long, 42 inch wide island. I thought about 3 smaller pendants but decided on two. And then the light over our cleanup sink which is in the middle of a 7 ft wide window will be the same kind of pendant. No upper cabinets on walls around window in our kitchen either. And then we will have 4 can LED lights (6 inch diam each from Home Depot). Two can lights on either side of the island, above the aisles and lined up above the cabinets lining each side of the room. Here's a picture of the pendant - of which we will have 3: Style of our kitchen is rather modern - Ikea Abstrakt -- very modern and not like this picture but wanted to show you the size - from what I read somewhere, guideline for our 42 inch wide island was 20 inch diameter for each pendant. Sorry I can't remember where I read this. Pendant in picture above is 19 inches in diameter. We will also have a short length of undercabinet lighting which will be dimmable (and other lighting also dimmable). Comments (58)imrainey: The countertop on my baking center is actually at the regular 36" height, not lower. I get a backache when I work at lower counters. I'm 5'6". mustbnuts: I use my undercabinet LED lighting mainly for accent lighting because I have very good lighting otherwise. If you need strong task lighting, make sure you have enough light output. A lot of GWers have used Ledtronics (ledtronics.com); they have a good website. I actually wound up buying my lights from a vender I found on ebay, Acolyte Industries (http://acolyteled.com/ ). I called them to get some technical details, and wound up purchasing through them directly. In addition to the lights, you will need a transformer for each switched group of lights. I have all my glass display lights on one transformer and all my undercabinet lights on another. I had also thought of having the left and right sides of my kitchen switched separately, but decided against it. We placed the transformers in our basement, under the kitchen. Some people place the transformers in the back of an upper cabinet. Do your homework before you commit to them or make any purchases. Use the search function at the bottom of the page to look up led undercabinet lightingthere have been several threads in the past year that have been very helpful. Comments (30)I was happy with the end result of the Barker cabinets. I thought they looked good and the finish seems to be very good--no damage in the year or so we had them. I actually saw them again when we visited (sold the house to a friend) and they still looked new at the two year mark. We had one place where edge banding, trim and cabinet met and the colors were not quite right. My GC made it work with some extra cover panel or something. The drawers opened and closed beautifully. My GC grumbled a bit about the door sizing and it being difficult to adjust them perfectly, but again he made it work. (He was a carpenter before he became a GC and made my bathroom vanities for me, but wouldn't do a full kitchen because of arthritis). The countertop is honed marble. I wanted a light color and Dh and I both really liked the looks of marble. I tried to find a more sensible substitute but we were never really happy with any of the other options and everything else was actually more expensive than Carrara marble--which was dirt cheap for us, almost as cheap as IKEA butcher block. We decided that we would be okay with scratches and etches. (Also Carrara can be rehoned in place, which reassured us that if we needed to make it look new for resale purposes we could) I loved that sink. It's the kohler stages 45. I wanted a second sink, mostly for the rest of the family to wash hands and get water to drink, but could not fit one in. The stages with two faucets filled that need nicely and functioned beautifully for food prep, etc. I think for induction you want a dedicated circuit and 40 amps? The appliance forum here would have the answer or someone else may chime in. I just know that out of all the great things in my kitchen, my induction range is the one I miss the most. And yes cast iron works. Anything that a magnet sticks to will generally work with induction. edited to add:. Thanks for your kind words. Comments (7)I know this post is already 6 months old. But we actually put an open shelf cabinet in a small master bathroom several years ago (maybe 2012?) I don't remember the exact dimensions but we probably hung the cabinet about 12" above the countertop (gave us more space on the counter and kept the cabinet from getting wet.) Most likely 18-24" wide, 12" deep and about 36" tall since it has 3 shelves (Kraftmaid.) Nice thing about having the sides is it prevents things from spilling over. We did have to fold the towels lengthwise in 3 before rolling up to make sure it didn't overhang the shelves....See Moremurpharoo

here is a picture of willowdecors kitchen (love!) it seems like she has 8 foot ceilings but are the uppers 36"? i think if the part below the X was solid, it would look strange but i think mine would be taller so more proportionate? 24" of solid cabinet and 12" with lighted glass pane. and then 6 inches for moulding?

12 years agoThe one you just posted looks taller than 42" to me (probably 48"), but it's the right idea.
I just saw this today and it can give you an idea of what it could look like. Just imagine glass instead of the cutouts in the top panel.
Here is another that I'm not at all crazy about. It looks like these are only 36"H cabinets. I think the width of the doors would be important to give them a tall slender look instead of a boxy look.
Since the glass will be smaller I would consider one pane in each door rather than the four.
