Miele W3033 versus Miele w4842
Comments (47)4842 and 9802 were delivered today. 1st impressions: First - we loved our Asko's and hated to see them go. Install was simple stuff - the crew was in and out in about 1 to 1 1/2 hours. They assembled the washer / dryer on the stands while in the truck. Getting the washer downstairs was a chore for two big guys. Installer said the washer (on stand) weighs nearly 350. The pair is a beast on the stands. Coming from our little Asko's - this pair is huge. Fit and finish is excellent. The stands are very nice - soft close doors, a place to set a basket on - well made (ought to be for the $$). The washer is almost silent until it spins up - and then it is not nearly as loud as the 1200rpm Asko it replaced. It does shake at full spin - did not walk or anything, but a clear shake. We did not consider the dryer to be noisy - but it clearly moves moves more air than any dryer we have had before. We did not install the solid aluminum vent pipe as recommended by sales person and folks on this forum. I bought it and installer encouraged us to try the flex aluminum vent pipe he brought with him. We agreed to try it and it was fine - returned the solid vent material today. The wife is very pleased - thought her first load of whites came out cleaner than the Asko - which is saying something. I talked her into these - would have been trouble if they did not perform at least as well as what she had. Quick wash (on cold) was about 30 minutes - Normal wash about an hour. More later after we get some experience....See MoreMiele W4842 Spin up to 1600 RPM
Comments (3)I would recommend that you not run the unit at that speed. Even though the service menu allows it, changing this could void your warranty as you are running the machine beyond its stated specifications. If the computer keeps a log of the service menu changes, in the event of a problem it would be relatively easy for Miele to determine that you were the one who changed the setting and can then deny a warranty claim. Just saying....See MoreAccessing Miele W4842 Service/Setting menu
Comments (20)Mine vibrates when it's spinning, but nothing that I would say is objectionable. Atop pedestals sitting on solid slate stone tiles atop concrete foundation. I expected more vibration than my older Asko, which had a "quattro" suspension way ahead of its time. No matter how heavy or unbalanced the load, the exterior chassis would barely shiver. I literally forgot a glass of wine on top of it once while it was spinning and thought what a wonderful commercial that would make! The Miele vibrates during spin. Period. If you're expecting a silent spin cycle that doesn't cause any vibration at all, pass on the Miele. I have not seen mine behave as badly as some of you have experienced. But every machine and installation is different. When I spoke with my salesperson about the spin - he has almost geek-level knowledge of his appliances and he visits this forum - he told me that the Mieles do have a tendency to vibrate more than other modern machines. The reason is because Miele's spin balancing algorithms are a little too forgiving, allowing the unit to go into unbalanced spins more often than we would like. The other, somewhat dirty secret is that the W4842 does not employ the more sophisticated suspension systems of its competitors. Miele tries to compensate for that with the added weight of the unit, which explains the "built like a tank" references. Miele's focus on automation and experience with sensors, the sophistication of the programming, all parts designed and built by Miele to Miele's reputably high standards, and the fact that Miele invests time and money into real research all played a role in my decision. I thought the Honeycomb drum design was clever and the "clean washer" program is simply brilliant and gets water everywhere. Jeez I'm talking about my appliances like they just made the honor roll or something!...See MoreFirst Service Call on the new Mieles (W4842/T9822)
Comments (24)@ livebetter In the words of my technician, it's due to "detergent residue"! In the dryer of all places! Either Miele is playing the slickest blame game in the world, or their machines are absolutely inept if confronted with "detergent residue" (i.e., dust). In my opinion, if the seals are allowing dust to escape from the exiting air column, then there is something wrong with the seals - not with the way I wash my laundry. I am 19 months into owning these machines, thank goodness I got the 2 year warranty for having my machines installed by Miele certified installers. Otherwise I would be out $312 for this repair. The cost of the Miele installation was $250. Good ROI here, but a little worried about these seals moving forward. Maybe the seal was defective or it wasn't installed properly at the factory, I don't know. One thing that did impress me... Miele designs these machines so that practically all servicing can be performed with the machines in place. Removing the top and front panels will give you clean access to virtually every point inside. The technician had to disassemble my drum in order to replace the rear seal, and he did it all in my small laundry room with the machines in place atop their pedestals. While I'm not impressed that I needed to have seals replaced after only 19 months, I am impressed with how accessible the machines are by design. I will say that this weird noise started about 6 months ago and has been getting progressively worse. It also pretty much coincided with my use of Clorox Green Works and Vaska - all of which suds more than other products even at reduced quantities. The technician said to stay away from Tide liquid products at all costs due to their sudsing issues. He mentioned in passing that they still don't know how to properly formulate HE detergent here in the US because all HE products here produce far more suds than European detergents. I may be abandoning all of my products and going back to my trusted Persil after this experience. I have a huge stash of Universal and Color Megaperls in my garage, enough to last me a very, very long time....See MoreCavimum
