Lemon Basil ideas needed

I am growing three kinds of basil. One is very strongly lemon scented. I am planning to use it in some cream sauce for shrimp, but wondered if anyone else has any good ideas for using it.

OT - My biggest and healthiest basil plant was a volunteer that must have sprouted in a geranium I over-wintered in my utility room last year! When I planted the geraniums in the flower bed it just appeared from nowhere.

Melenie, I also grew the lemon basil last year and liked it so well I'm growing it this year. I really like it with chicken as well as seafood but I haven't found a use for a lot of it.

I also have three kinds of basil growing, the lemon basil, a purple basil and sweet basil. Mmmmm, love it.

I've been making summer rolls daily to use up lots of basil and because they are so low cal and delicious during hot weather.
I use pan flash sauteed shrimp, carrots, green onion, red pepper, rice noodles, and basil. A dipping sauce too, of course.
The vegetables can vary to whatever you like.

Welcome to GW finally someone newer than I! Let me help you get started since you love native plants: *I can send you lemon balm roots, peppermint roots spearmint roots, lovage roots comfrey roots if not too hidden by snow. Jerusalem artichokes if I can find them, I usually pull them out and toss them away in an untended spot since they pop up in places I don't like.If you want them. *Dahlia variabilis 'diablo' Dahlia v. 'unwins dwarf mix' Painted daisy 'Robinson's giant Mix (Tanacetum coccineaum) black eye suzan hot pink cosmos. I can use these for my swaps: Cuburbita moschata - Long Island Cheese Pumpkin Stevia - (herb) black tula and amish tomato -sorry I have no oregano nor marjoram,Gaillardia, Oranges, Lemons, nor coconut lime coneflower left, but I can send you tons of the regular orange with black centers, a few irish eyes ones(green centers, someone's got basil for you.Lemon Grass next year. There are many SASBE offerings on the normal seed exchange forum(meaning that they give you their extra seeds if you send them a self addressed stamped bubble envelope ). I don't know how i could have done it without these very generous offers for newbies. And you also need to sign up for the round robin swaps going on all the time in 'Round Robins', but you must hurry (you find that link by clicking on the garden forum---seed exchange--- and when that comes up at the top of the page before the threads start, there are options---click on 'round robins' This will be I'm told is your best way to build up your seed varieties. Beautiful pics Becky! I grow all those too. Lemon cucumbers are the very best cukes and Julietes 'son muy deliciosa!' Julietes make the best sun dried tomatoes (I use my oven set on 200 degrees). Oil them with Extra Virgin Olive oil and bake until leathery but still juicy. Freeze them for later use, if they don't all get eaten first. I really do love you photos. Artistically arranged in that beautiful colander. I can see all the glorious Temecula sunshine shining into your kitchen. Lovely. (Waaah...makes me homesick). ~Annie

Hi, I would like to have some of your seeds if you still have any. I would have to do a SASBE (Does this mean "Self addressed stamped business envelope?) if that would be okay. I recently moved and had to leave all of my plants behind. I really do miss my garden. Thank you!

Basil seems to like richer soils than most of the meditteranian herbs and they do cross readly like mints hence all the cultivars to select from. Mrs. Burns Lemon Basil is the best I have grown but if you have other types and you let them flower and set seed the results next year may be less impressive. Hope this offers some help as to why you are disappointed with the flavor. The smell is the main thing in my opinion and yes I do like it with salad and teas are always good with some basil almost any kind as it adds a nice touch of flavor and smell and calms you much like chamomille teas do another of my fav herb tea.

I would love the lemon basil on my tomato salads, meaning just sliced tomatoes and sometimes mozzarella. Also I'd use bunches in a salad dressing. In a shrimp saute would be great. On various fish or squash.

Make a simple syrup with the lemon basil. . .and then use that in a Lemon Basil Martini. . .oh my, oh my!!

I use it with Thai curry paste when making Thai stir fried chicken with vegetables. I now only grow sweet basil and Thai basil, and my Thai basil is not getting very large. I have sweet basil that is still growing from last summer and is the oldest continuously living basil plant I've grown. It has a nice woody stalk that keeps putting out new shoots and so I don't have to plant as much.

Thank you for all the good ideas. It's so hot a lemon basil martini would be great right now! I will try the basil in a tomato, mozzarella, avocado salad as soon as we get some ripe ones. Usually by now we're getting a lot but this has been a bad year for gardening in Mid-Missouri and we haven't had a vine ripened tomato yet.

i seldom post here & I am mostly a lurker but I love lemon basil & plant this yearly. I usually use it for chicken or seafoods. One of my favorite recipe with this herb is with shrimp cocnut squash soup. My father use this a lot for roasting chicken. And you can use this as a substitute for lemon grass.
