Can lights: can I just replace incandescent with LED bulbs?

Can I just replace incandescent bulbs with LED bulbs in my kitchen recessed can lights? When searching for new trim rings for my existing can lights I saw reference to "replacement" LED can lights. Why would I go to that great expense (the can lights work fine) when equivalent screw in LED bulbs are available? I thought I'd ask just in case I'm missing something important. Wouldn't be the first!

BTW, I've actually already done this and so far, no smoke and flames that I can see and they seem to be working fine. Ended up with soft white after experiencing the "operating room effect" of the daylight LEDs. Loved the light, but just too bright white--walked in the first morning and thought, "I feel like I'm in an operating room!" Also they were too different from existing CFL ceiling light and fluorescent over the sink light.

Lamps like the CR6 come with an integrated trim ring.

The can itself is not replaced when either the CR6 or a A19 /PAR or BR light is used

The replacements look very high end compared to screwing in a light bulb. I don't know how bright the light bulbs are but the Ecosmart Cree LED replacements (also screw in) are about 50 percent brighter than my equivalent incandescents, glad that I added a dimmer. The 2700k is a lovely warm color.

I had a mix of fluorescent, incandescent, and warm LED for a while in adjacent rooms. It didn't bother me but my sister and son, both photographers, complained a lot about it since the colors were all slightly different. I finally have everything changed over to 2700k LED (replacements) and am very happy about it.

Fluorescent bulbs can be recycled and the mercury captured and reused. It's mandatory here in Europe now, although I'm sure many bulbs still find their way in to the regular waste stream. You would have to check your local area to see what disposal options are available. However, even if we do dispose of them in the regular waste and the mercury ends up in to the environment, it is still better for the environment than having used ordinary bulbs. Burning coal releases mercury, thus the energy guzzling old fashioned bulbs contribute far more mercury to the environment than a comparative fluorescent. This is true even when you take in to account both the mercury from the energy it consumes and the small amount of mercury in the bulb itself. Ideally, if you're concerned about mercury in the environment, you should use fluorescent lighting and dispose of the bulbs properly.

Sorry to disagree. But LEDs are fantastic for general lighting. The quality of the light looks just as good as a normal bulb. And the Cree LRP-38 Par 38 bulb has light just as good as a halogen. We've actually replaced halogen PAR bulbs in a retail store with the LRP 38. She's saving over 3000 watts of power with absolutely no sacrifice in light quality. Different LEDs have different qualities though. I don't know how good the Excel ones are. And if it's just a screw in bulb, I would question how good it is. The Cree bulb is the one exception I've seen, but it's also very pricey. But for recessed light applications, we've been extremely successful using LED light sources. They are brighter, more flexible, have better color rendering and sometimes even less expensive than equivalent fluorescent bulbs.

I agree, those are not bare bulbs. You will/should be able to use the pendants. If anything, change to something cheap/required for the final inspection then change to what you want. I brought the foyer fixture from our last home, an old piece, for our pantry. Love it. I have two small 3 light chandeliers in the MBR closet - put up after final inspection. In the other walk-in's a bought inexpensive light bases and used vintage glass globes to cover. It really can depend on the inspector too - in the powder room, for example, I brought antique sconces from our last home. Put 2 in the foyer and 2 in the powder room. Even had those rewired locally and put on a ground wire. Inspector said they were not okay for a wet location. (WTH is going to splash water 5ft up and 2ft over? ??? So I had to change them out to the fugliest cheapest outdoor UL approved for wet space fixtures you've ever seen. ;D Then took them down and returned after final. DH replaced with sconces. Can't wait to see everything pulled together.

I used the Juno Recessed Lighting 17 trim (available with many reflector colors; I chose Haze) with the Juno TC1R 4" Line Voltage Remodel Housing and 50W PAR20 bulbs. Juno offers many trims that fit in the TC1R housing. "are there integrated LED lights which are easy to DIY replace? I'm sure that after a year or two, whatever we install will be obsolete and we won't be able to find ones identical to the originals." In the ceiling, install retrofit cans with screw connectors for the lamps (example). Then you can replace the integrated trim (example) anytime one fails. You could buy a few extra trims if you want to be sure to have a one that matched an existing one.

Why not try just one to see how you like the results? If not good, the investment is minimal. If good, proceed with haste. Should you decide to do them all, buy one extra LED lamp as they too can fail prematurely.

When I returned the "daylight" LED bulbs to Home Depot, I then ordered the 65 watt equivalent 2700k soft white. It was a very good deal $50 for 6 (I needed 6). The color matches closely, can't really tell any difference to my other CFL and fluorescent fixtures in the room--it really was noticeably different. The initial cost very reasonable and the cost savings a great incentive. I know they are brighter than my 65 watt incandescents, but I can't really tell. At least I had a chance to try out the much brighter and whiter "daylight" LEDs, but they just wouldn't work for me. I found out later that Home Depot had an in store comparison display set up, but I think you almost have to experience them in real life.

So, it was really simple to just unscrew the incandescent bulbs and then screw in the LEDs. If it had been necessary to put in new LED specific can lights it would not have been worth it.

Yes, you can just put a led bulb in. There are numerous manufactors with quality bulbs (BR30, BR40, Par30, & Par38) available at Lowes and Home Depot (Phillips, Sylvania, Feit (Utilitech), and Lighting Science (Ecosmart).

I would stay away from CREE Cr6 (they are so 2013) because they require you to replace the trim, and if you are replacing your incadescents as they burn out, you'll have mismatched trim. Also, the Cr6 are not particularly bright, and most of the brands named above have screw-in BR30 and BR40 that are substantially brighter. I also didn't mention the CREE Br30, as their stand-alone bulbs tend to have substantial flicker.
