$22-$24/lb good price for peaches?

We are in Myrtle beach, sc till Sunday AM. I plan on getting peaches to can tomorrow. I couldnt find anything locally any cheaper. Even walmart was .98/lb. This seems a little high.These prices are at the roadside stands

Do you mean $22-$24 a bushel? That's what they go for here usually, about $12 a half bushel, $24 a bushel. There aren't any Michigan peaches this year, the entire crop got hit by a late frost, so I won't be canning any.

Peaches north of Baltimore on the Pennsylvania Maryland line are $19 per half bushel. I don't know how many pounds that is, but they'll be packed in quart jars tomorrow!

I have gotten some pretty big trees from Cummins. But maybe it was just what I was ordering (French cider apples which were not selling very well I expect). Even the smallest trees were bigger than 12-24"ers. Trees of Antiquity I would agree is the very best. MHG, here is a picture of some covered figs that I took a year ago: I use a stapler to "stitch" together the sheets and I use ground staples to firmly attach it to the ground (a staple every 6" to 1' or so around the bottom). The rope cinch on the outside makes sure the cover will stay on in high winds. You can't see but inside the cover I use rope to pull the limbs in to allow a smaller cover. It took me a couple hours to make this cover and it takes 20 minutes to put it on and 20 minutes to take it off. It probably cost me about $50 worth of insulation; it has lasted four years and looks to be able to make it to about ten. I bought a new roll this winter from a guy on eBay selling slightly dented rolls for half price -- worked out great. All that said, if I lived in your climate I would probably just grow hardy varieties of peaches. Scott

Hman, You're right, I do thin more than commercial guidelines. I think perhaps the difference may be related to vigor. A lot of my shoots are 3' long as the norm (although not this season with the drought). Someone with just 18" of shoot extension would leave two fruit on that shoot (by commercial guidelines). However with my shoots being much longer, I'd leave five fruit on a 3' shoot (by commercial guidelines). Multiplied by lots of shoots, it becomes too much weight for the tree to bear. So I have to thin a bit more aggressively to compensate for the increased vigor, I think. I believe it's also a little windier here so that it takes less weight to break branches than in most parts of the county. I noticed I had a large broken branch yesterday on one of the trees, but I've been catching a lot of possums lately, so it could have been a possum that broke it down. I do think I sometimes over thin on some trees, but I still try to follow the 12" rule because I have a somewhat laissez-faire attitude about yield. I know I have some mature trees that produce two bushel of fruit when they should really be producing three, or younger trees producing 25 lbs. of fruit when they should be producing 50 lbs., but at this point I don't get too excited about the lost opportunity. Maybe I'll go broke with that attitude. I'm sure I've still got a lot to learn about growing peaches commercially. I recommend thinning to 12" on this forum not only because I do so, but also because the tendency for most people harvesting their first fruit is to under thin. Even if they over thin a bit, as I sometimes do, I think a lot of people will be happier with their first harvest of nice large fruits vs. making a mistake the other way and have a tree full of peaches that are little bitty. But you're right, I think a lot of trees can tolerate one fruit for every 8" of branch space or so, under lower wind and vigor conditions.

Our peaches were from local orchard but they spray. How do you "wash" them? Maybe I should have thrown out the ice water (not too much ice left in it) but the skins were already in it so I just threw the pits in too and dumped it into the pot. I hate to think I wasted my blackberries - do you think this jelly/preserves is really any more "contaminated" than if I had used fresh water? Or store-bought peach jam/jelly? Or eating fresh (sprayed, rinsed) peaches? Next time I think I will just use the pits (clingstone so plenty of flesh left on them), maybe scrape out the red fibers from the center of the peaches b4 making jam and use those with the pits for making jelly. But throw away the skins (and the blanching water). It's so hard to try to keep chemicals out of our bodies without spending a fortune, or growing your own. Though I hear peaches are very hard to get a good crop from w/o spraying. I know our "organic" apples are very ugly and spotty, I have to really scrub them to get black spot off b4 cooking though I have no hesitation about eating one right off the tree.

Yeah, but it beats the $2/lb the other orchard in town was asking for their really early, small peaches last month. You have to remember I live in the 15th wealthiest town in the 4th wealthiest state in the nation ;-) I bought a bushel for $50 from another place last year, don't know what they're charging this year. I told the lady last night I'd buy some next week if my friend didn't have any (unsprayed) ripe today. I'll ask about bushel or half bushel prices next week, but even at $50 I figured it was less expensive to just buy canned (in plastic or glass, don't like the aluminum cans) in the grocery store for DD's lunch. But I do like peach jam.

Tammy, grab a taste and if they are as good as last years, grab them!!!!! And if you head a bit north there is a tomato/farm stand that lets you pick your own tomatoes for about $5/bushel. well worth it.

Thanks pkramer. I know the ones we ate last yr were divine. So sweet and juicy. Tomatoes wont be a problem tho. I have several plants that should have ripe ones waiting when we return.

Wow, $5.00 a bushel for tomatoes. I wish. I paid $4.99lb for Heirloom tomatoes yesterday. Two Black Krim tomatoes cost me $4.29.

What are the size of the peaches y'all are talkin about?
'Round cheer the local peaches are about the size of
tennis balls. I 'member, back in the summer of 1970,
I bought some peaches from a street vendor, that were
the size of grapefruits. And they were so sweet, juicy
and delicious, (OMG). I have never again found such
peaches. Do they exist, or was that a dream that I had?

I just bought a bushel today in SC for $44. they are about 10"-11" around. little smaller than a softball. And soooo sweet and delicious.

Just to update this thread... Peaches have been selling for $5.00 a qt (5 peaches) at the farmers markets around here but there aren't many due to the early budding and late frost.

I got a call this morning from one of the orchards I stop at. They had a few from their own trees and could sell me some. I drove right over and got a 1/2 bushel. They were $30.00. These are Redhavens, a peach Michigan is known for and my favorite. I counted out 30 peaches and there is a little more than twice that in the bag yet, so I think I did quite well.

There will be peach pie, peach jam, canned peaches and fresh peaches for my morning cereal at this house.
On the drive home I got to thinking... it's nothing to spend $30.00 on a couple of good steaks, wouldn't even give it a thought. I'll get a lot of enjoyment from the peaches and probably sell a few jars of jam at the farmers market to pay for them. I'm happy! :)

To me, fresh peaches should be like fresh tomatoes....
picked while still warm from the sun.................OMG!!!!
And, when you bite into them, the juice runs down
your chin, so much so, that you wish you had eaten them nekid, (be still my heart).
I guess I'm still working on childhood memories.
Maybe I should slap myself, and wake up.
