Taming a black & white checkerboard floor

I'm not quite sure how to search to see if any of you have done this. A friend has a black and white linoleum floor (checkerboard) that she hates, and would like to tame it by putting a stain over it so it has a more mellow appearance. She also has beautiful walnut cabinets and thinks a wood colored stain would help tie it all together. Does anyone know how to go about doing this? I didn't exactly know how to help her except to come here and ask!
