Look what I found at a thrift store for $75!

Wandered into one of my favorite little thrift stores, still sort of looking for chairs that I could play with. I saw this and bought it immediately.

I'd been looking for a chest for my entryway, and wanted a used one with good lines and curves. I had intended to get one in bad cosmetic shape (if I could find one) so I could paint it black.

This one I may just have to leave alone. The finish is in incredible shape, and just needs a bit of touching up.

It's a real gem; solid wood, dovetail drawers, etc.

I was a thrift store junkie for years, and have to restrain myself now to only what I need, not what I just want. We have this AWESOME Goodwill Bargain Barn here where you dig through bins of stuff and tables of clothes. Most of the clothes are last season's stuff from the regular GW, so good clothes. I've found some wonderful bargains...clothes are $1.69 a lb., so well worth the digging. Linens are $1.29 a lb., and I got a beautiful designer bed comforter and shams for less than $10. I bought a matching bed skirt at another thrift store for $5. I looked up the name brand, and most of their stuff goes for around $100 a set, so what a buy! I haven't shopped at a "real" store for so long, I wouldn't know what to do if I had to.

I would try to fix the crack, if you can get the insert out of the door frame; that's just me - it would bug me. If you can show us the room and bed it's going next to, it may spur more suggestions. Another option for the top, if you have the painting bug and perhaps something on the top doesn't come off with sanding, would be to clean it and sand it smooth and do something like a faux marble paint job on it. It's really very easy. This was my first (and only so far) on the top of a small pine desk/table. I did it with acrylic craft paints. It doesn't show here, but it had a stain on the top from some very red colored stain that just wouldn't come off.

Beautiful! Definitely a keeper! It reminds me of the smaller piece my one grandmother has and then my other grandmother has a high chest of drawers that would match!

I have an antique dresser with a beveled mirror on the back last year for $50. It holds our TV for now. Someday when I have a larger house, it will get a new use but I needed something for the tv that fitted with our style better and it was such a deal!

Amazing! The grain on that oak (oak, yes? it looks to be from here) is just splendid. Is there any maker's mark on it anywhere?

Oh, I love that piece! That is most definitely a steal & perfect for an entry. It does appear to be a darker tiger oak, just lovely!

Great find!! Looks great - my mom has one very simliar and we are using it as a nightstand for her right now!! Very versatile piece.

I'm pretty sure it's tiger oak. I think I'll clean up the hardware a bit to give them a better shine and leave it alone. I love painted black furniture, but the grain on this is just do dang eye-catching!

Fly, I didn't even look for a maker's mark, but I will do that in a bit.

I LOVE it! Don't you dare paint it! It is GORGEOUS!!!! If you painted it it would look very nice, but unpainted it is SPECTACULAR!!!! It would have been a steal for ten times what you paid.

No way. If it were just plain oak, I may have considered it. But this tiger oak is yummy.

I used some "Restore A Finish" on it, dabbed a little stain over some of the scratches, and used a little Rub n Buff to lighten up the hardware. It is finished, IMO.

I pulled some old accessories in that I had, but I'm sure I'll tweak what's on there later. (Tried a mirror, but it made it look too much like a dresser, and not an entry table.)

Jesu Christi. That first picture is good enough to eat.

I don't know if that plant on top of it is fake, but this dresser cries out for authentic neighbors, IMO.

Heh heh....Fly, I don't even *own* a real plant, save for the weeds that seem to flourish under my care in the summer.

I'm going to tweak the arrangement, I'm sure. These were just random things I had around the house. Not really anything special or anything that floats my boat too much.

Reno, were you the one that posted the long informative thread months and months ago about Restore-A-Finish? Because I was just using it today on an old, old, old, desk that I had stored in the garage. Great stuff. And speaking of great stuff, you absolutely positively scored. The chest is darling. Not darling after painting, but darling NOW. It's perfectamundo in your entry!

Is Restore a Finish anything like Liquid Gold? I am hearing a lot about these products lately.

Wow.. I know you've heard it more than once on this thread but that's sooo pretty! Very nice. I actually saw a piece very similar to that (Also appears to be tiger oak) at a thrift store near me. Think they wanted $600 something for it. Nice find indeed! Congrats!

Thanks all! I really love this chest. Even my DH who is not usually partial to my "rescued" finds likes this one.

The Restore A Finish was recommended to me by an antique dealer. It really is amazing stuff. I'm not sure what it is or how it works, but I know that since that guy recommended it, I've heard other antique dealers say that's the only thing they'll use on their antiques.

I did dab a little stain on some gouged areas so they'd blend better, but that's all I did. The Restore A Finish really woke it up.

I really don't know what Liquid Gold is, but I keep a bottle of the Restore A Finish on hand for pretty much everything.
