help! fill my empty LR

I have this huge LR that we've been working on for the past 6 months ... tomorrow the floor will be refinished, and we are at the point where I am ready to start thinking about decorating and buying furniture. The only thing that we have for it is the rug. Otherwise I am completely lost.

It measures 155" wide (almost 13 feet) and 250" (almost 21 feet) long. I am thinking of buying this sectional

but not sure what configuration. I like the bone color. Basically, we will have all of our books in our LR (so wee need to get bookcases)and we need lots of sitting space. NO TV or anything. This is how it looks now.

Any suggestions of where to put what and how? The rug does not have to stay. I can put it in our Master BR. Also, I have a problem with wall decor ... and with 2 toddlers, 3d on the way a fun project became very depressing since I have no time and no energy and I feel hurried since I am due in April. Thus, any help would be appreciated GREATLY!!! Thank you.

Is that the room color you want, newtoremodeling? It's very soothing. Works well with the floor, and will be pretty with the bone sectional.

You'll probably put bookcases along the non-window wall, correct? Might you have some music system & CDs in the book cases? So I was thinking it would be nice to have the long end of the sectional against the window wall, maybe pulled out a bit so it floats in the room. And have the short end of the sectional parallel to the stair banister. That way the sofa opens into the room in a way so that you can easily access the bookshelves and also the dining area for entertainment flow. Perhaps a low round coffee table to set drinks on would look good. And by pulling the sectional out away from the wall, you'll have room for floor lamps for lighting.

When I first start my beds, the majority of the "filler" ends up being straw. I have used both newly purchased straw, as well as bales that are "old" - wet, etc. I get some new ones for the garden, and the walls of my compost pile are straw, which I use once the compost is gone. I tend to use the old straw as a mulch, and just pack the flakes of the new bales in like puzzle pieces when building the bed. Leaves, grass, paper, cardboard as the bottom layer to kill the grass - all are good layers, and will eventually break down. I sprinkle bone and blood meals on some of the layers when I have it, sometimes I don't. I dig holes, which I fill using organic potting soil. If I'm planting seeds, I just dig a row, and fill the row with potting soil, and plant the seeds! Makes it easy to see your rows... As long as you give the plants enough nutrients that first year, and keep adding mulch as needed, it should be fine. I live in Northern CA ( read that as little to no rain in the spring/summer)- and keeping the beds watered is not a problem - just tuck the irrigation hoses/drippers/whatever under the mulch! Actually, the straw mulch helps a LOT with moisture retention. I have also been known to mulch with grass clippings. As you do, I tend to steer clear of municipal mulch - although I do get manure from a nearby stable - they let it 'cure', as she calls it, then it is free for the taking. I tend to use it as a layer nearer the bottom or middle of the bed, so by the time the roots make it down that far, it is pretty integrated with the other layers. I do this with ALL my beds, veggie and flower - although many of mine are a combo of both. This may not be the correct way to do this, but it has worked for me for years. We have very hard clay soil, digging in it can be like digging in concrete! So these beds are perfect for me, and the plants are thriving.

thanks, I planted in late may so that makes sense that I did not see any blooms on my phlox. I will see what happens next year. I do love the thyme. I have to trim some of it cause it grows over my stepping stones. the smell is great. I will look for red thyme. since I already know woolly grows well here adding more thyme might be a good idea. some of the other low growing mosses (step-able plants) did not come back that I planted last year :( but the woolly thyme came back very healthy. Oh. Like magic. :o) For sanitary reasons, I’m not sure what you could put there. How about a couple of floating shelves on the wall up above? If you don’t need the storage/display space, I still think just an art print would do it. It is a bit of an awkward spot but its location right next to the toilet kind of gives it an ick factor. Sorry I’m not more help.

I don’t understand that white shelf over the head board. It messed up your room so take it down and find some art or fabric you like and stretch it over a large frame for some fun in your room. Some fabric like this pillow would bring some joy. Try moving that bookcase over to beside bed to use as a bit of a night stand. Then move corner ladder piece to corner left of TV. Move dressing mirror to other side of room. Get a lumbar pillow with more color to go with art you create. Let the art cover any holes you have in walls. A small chair would be nice too. Put a ball lamp on bookshelf. I will post some pictures to give you some additional inspiration.

How long do you plan to stay in the house? I ask because sectionals can be very room and house specific. So if you have any intention of moving before the sofa wears out, you may do better with two sofas plus some chairs vs. a really large sectional.

Well, thanks for all the help. DH did reschedule floor refinishing for next Friday since we weren't 100% ready.

awm, yes, we painted the room recently. I like the color though next time (in 5-10 years?) I will go with a lighter color. I picked it because it's in our rug. Yes, bookcases will go along non-window wall, not sure which one yet.

robin, though I didn't see your post, I did end up ordering a leather sofa, loveseat, chair, and a lamp from overstock.com. It all came out to about $2000 and I am keeping my fingers crossed that the quality will be OK. We are on a pretty tight budget but I am hoping the LR set will last at least 10 years. Can't wait to get it. It's dark brown. I spent three days researching sofas and almost all brands have mixed reviews, so I decided to just go for something I visually like ... hope it's comfy, too.

I'll post photos as we make progress. Our LR has been empty for so long, I can't wait to use it again.
