I haven't seen pix of your house, but I really like the dresser, and putting it in an entry seems an imaginative use. Don't know anything about painting wicker either, sorry. You do want to make sure there's no moldy or weird odor to it, which I think wicker can have and which won't come out.

Guess what -- I just finished a project yesterday that I've been trying to get done for more than 25 years (making file folders and organizing every single paper in my office--I'm a writer, so there are a bunch!) I'm moving on to the next goal, which I've only had for 20 years. There's hope for all of us never-finishers, Melanie!

As for the dresser, I completely forgot that wicker can smell musty. My mom has a wicker shelf that does have an odor. I wouldn't use it for clothes, so that's good. It would be for all the misc. stuff that we don't have a spot for: games, toys, library books...things used in the living area that don't have homes. If it fits my space I definitely want to check it out :-)

DH is willing to give it a try--he said it could be "practice" if nothing else. I hope, if I get it, that the result is better than just "practice". I'll have to look for "painting wicker" online when I get home tonight and see how much trouble I might be in for.

I think it makes perfect sense to use a dresser instead of a table! Sounds like a great place to stash the otherwise homeless stuff you mentioned.

I loved having a thing-with-drawers (I actually had a sideboard) in the foyer at my previous house. It was a great place for all that "homeless" stuff, as well as having a place to stash hats, gloves, etc., somewhere to drop keys and mail and suchlike, and to hold a pretty lamp to light the foyer. The front hallway in this house is far too small for such a thing but my mom is giving me a little antique commode that I think will fit there. I'd at least go look at it and see if it can be adapted to your needs.

Spray paint works particularly well for wicker, either aerosol cans or an electric paint sprayer with regular latex paint - a little entry-level Wagner one can be had for under $50. You can paint or polyurethane wicker things inside as well as outside in order to mitigate funky smells.

Thanks for the feedback! The dresser, however, is too large for the wall in the entry way. :-( I'm still going to go look at it, maybe it will work for an under-tv unit. The tv is eventually going to be mounted on the wall (currently it's sitting on our piano) and I wanted something under it w/storage.

I did buy it--it seemed like a decent and interesting, sturdy dresser at a quite reasonable price. The drawers are made out of wood w/wicker fronts; I was expecting the dresser to be kind of rickety but it's decently solid. The drawers operate very smoothly and, from what I can tell, it's in excellent condition with NO odors. The sellers lived in a very nice neighborhood and had a beautiful home.

Here's the thing (and I may start a new thread about this): it totally looks like something you'd see in a little girls room, and that's where it used to be. This morning I realized what attracted me to that dresser is that there is a subtle similarity between it and the dresser I had growing up (which my parents still have). My old dresser was not well-built or wicker, but the overall shape was similar. My mom always called it "cheap French Provincial".

I digress. I think the carved, curvy bottom parts of the dresser can be removed to help it look more "adult". I haven't decided if I'm going to remove the handles or not, they're attached securely and I'm not exactly sure how. If I keep the handles I'll paint them black. The handles are interesting wooden cups w/carving on them, very pretty, but I think metal handles would look more mature. Maybe I can find a metal-looking paint? I still want to paint it the deep, muted red. Perhaps it will look more mature that way. The top is also wicker, probably over wood, and the edges have sort of large waves. There is a Pier 1 Imports label on the back that says "Jamaica collection".

I need to take and post a more detailed photo b/c the dresser is actually quite ornate--the CL photo did not capture the detail. As I mentioned earlier, it's not my usual taste at all. This morning when I realized it reminded me of MY old dresser, I had some doubts about how it would look in our LR. Even so, I'm going to look for primer and paint tomorrow. DH has a sprayer (as mentioned by johnmari), so maybe I can paint it during a clear weather week and start using it soon!
