Whoops! We butchered too much!

The thread about how cheap things got expensive got me to thinking. I always check the "clearance" section at the grocery stores which have them for cheapy "day old" stuff. The bakery at one store puts stickers on the day old bread which read "Whoops! We baked too much" so I call the clearance meat section "Whoops! We butchered too much" or sometimes, "Whoops! We killed too many cows!"

Anyway, I often buy stuff in the clearance meat seciton and have never had any problems with it. Most often the sell by date is a day or two in the future. The other day I bought a 2.5 lb brisket for $1.88 and went home and stuck it in the dutch oven the next night. It was delicious, especially considering the price!

The HEB near me USED to do the same thing in the produce section (Whoops! We picked too much) and I've garnered some large bags of tomatoes, onions, lemons, or mixed up stuff for $1 per bag. What a deal! They don't do it anymore, I don't know why!

So... does your grocery store have any clearance sections? What great deals have you snagged?
