Yeah....but things are only discounted 30%...but for bread which is 40%.....and the occasional bag of 10g reen or red peppers fro $.99.

I look in the store's "whoops" section too, but carefully consider my own "whoops, I bought too much" section of my freezer first.

I have two freezers full of "whoops, I bought too much and I put up too much garden." Then I have two refrigerators with small freezers and they are the same way.

Why do I do it?

Nope, not at the local grocery...that was a darned good deal for 2.5# brisket.

The Ralphs meat department here often has manager specials where I'll find nice bargains on various and sundry types of meat of may kinds.

Yes, our local Meijer's has a section of produce and baked goods that are nearing their expiration date.

My local store is small and independent and doesn't have a special section, you'll just find the meat in the meat case with a "sale" sticker on it.

However, they get big shipments of specials, they don't even advertise, you'll just walk in the front door and find a big display of t shirts for a buck, or red peppers 3 for $1 or apples or broccoli or whatever. This week it's Christmas melons for $1.99, cantalope 99 cents each and broccoli for 59 cents a pound.

Nope. $1.88 total price. Yeah, it was a major bargain. They had marked it down already then stuck a 50% off sticker on it. Their bargains aren't usually THAT good but they're generally pretty good. I don't always find something I want though.

We don't have alot of mark downs at our groceries because most of it is picked up by the food bank.

In my supermarket, the meat with short "sell by" dates is right there in the meat case, usually with a special sticker to indicate the discounted price.

There are racks for "discontinued" merchandise, where I've occasionally found great bargains (e.g., on casserole dishes or storage containers), but most of the stuff is packaged or bottled products that, I suspect, are "trucked in" for display there. They are primarily gourmet or ethnic products that were never on the regular store shelves in the first place. I've found that, even if they're marked down, they're not necessarily low price, and usually they're not something I need or want to try. Still, I feel that magnetic pull to check the rack for true bargains.

In my market meat dated that same day is marked down 30-50 percent. It's wonderful to take home and cook that day, but some of it looks a little unappealing--odd color or lotsa fat. But I did get a couple filets on sale once or twice. And this week I got Foster Farms chicken breasts half price.

If I take home "same day" meat and put it in the freezer, I always make a note of it. I don't want to thaw it in the refrig and let it be there a couple days.

The marked down meat at my store is past its prime-- steaks are brownish instead of red, and don't smell great. Chicken has a little bit of an off-smell.

And wow, that brisket was a really good deal!! I always feel like I end up paying more than I want to for stuff that I think should be cheap, like pork shoulder or butt. I'd kill for a good butcher with specials.
