Good Rug Deal? Should I get them?

I live by the following in my decorating: "If it's time for me to get something that I want but don't need then it will present itself at the right price at the right time and I will be able to afford it at that time. If not then I will have no worries to go w/o."

For a few yrs. I've wanted some type of natural grass rugs but nothing was ever really in my very modest price range that was just what I wanted. Too lumpy, too bumpy, too scratchy, too rough too cha ching! So we've gone w/o rugs for a few yrs now.

This morning I found 2 flat braided jute rugs that fee really soft on the feet. They are each 5x7 and are $50 each. I think that they may be a tad too small (I'm terribly at spacial planning) so I bought one to try and they are holding the other one for me. 1 for LR, 1 for office that sort of act as one room so I treat them as 1 room decor wise.

1. Is that a decent price or might I find something else somewhere down the line? Rugs really have never really been on my radar so I can't say I know too much about what's out there unless it's at IKEA!

2. My sofa and chairs won't have their front legs on the rug - will the rug look too small for the room? It goes almost right up to the front legs of everything and there's plenty showing under the coffee table.

3. The coffee table that I would ideally like to use when I get our sectional is made out of banana leaves (it is currently being stored in the basement because of other reasons):

Would that be too much 'grass type stuff' going on?

DH would love for me to part w/ this coffee table anyways but I still love it. I also have a large old white tool trunk that I could use as a coffee table. Our sectional will be a white slipcovered sectional.

So for you rug pro's out there what do you think? Go for it or hold off?

For me it would be too much of the same texture. You've already got the coffee table and the basket on top so I would get a soft wool rug for a contrast.
I really like the coffee table too, but don't know how practical it is for drinks of putting feet up. Perhaps that is why your dh doesn't like it?

I'd try the white trunk, that sounds nice too and would work with "grassy" type rugs.

It may be too grassy but I love that table too. Maybe you could choose a colored jute rug to break it up?

FWIW I got these at Overstock and LOVE them. Soft underfoot (as opposed to a seagrass one that is very hard and not barefoot or kid-bottom friendly).

Oh, that sound like a perfect spot for one. They do need cool roots in hot zones. I just mulch mine to shade them and plant stuff in front of them while they climb the trellis. Bri I hope things get better for you. I wish I could find someting cool like ground orchids around here. I went to Lowes yesterday to get screws for the greenhouse and didn't even go to garden center. They have absolutely nothing there right now but Christmas trees, poinsettas and pansies, lol.

You can also occasionally luck out on Craigslist. I live in Portland, OR and found a good deal on a 48" Monogram range for just over $6,000. New in box with the full warranty, but I had to pick it up. However, GE had changed the model number for this particular configuration of range so the distributor wanted to get rid of it. They had two of them (both sold in a day). But I saw another distributor up in Seattle that had a similar deal going on (for a few hundred more). If you wanted a different configuration, however, the prices went up dramatically (because GE hadn't messed around with the model numbers for the other configurations). Obviously, this is a very hit-or-miss thing. And be careful to buy from a place where the warranty will pass through to you (some manufacturers don't honor warranties if the goods are sold through an unauthorized dealer). In my case, the seller's business model is to generally sell through contractors only and not directly to homeowners except when model changes or other odd things happen. Then they dump the items on Craigslist.

I agree with all of you: they're definitely Hollywood Regency. And I should recharacterize my own style, which is probably better said to be "*in* transition" rather than transitional. (: I do like clean-lined pieces, and our DR set is very Mission; the adjacent LR combines Mission and Art Deco; and our bedroom, where these chairs would go, is your basic Recovering Graduate Student/Random Wedding Present room. So funky/eclectic would fit in just fine there. And there's just something about these chairs... The room is a long rectangle. The half without windows is for the bed (not a bed per se, but rather mattresses on a metal frame) and the dressers, which are mismatched yard sale finds. On the other side of the room, I'd like to create a sitting/reading area next to the windows, with a gorgeous view of the mountains (by far the nicest thing about the room!). We got a red and tan handloomed Peruvian folk-art rug for our wedding, and that's what we'll use to set off the seating area. Also on that side of the room, framing one window, are some slender dark walnut modern-styled bookcases. And then the part I'd like to replace: a heinously ugly loveseat that a friend gave us, also on that side of the room. I'd much rather find some reading chairs and an ottoman than a loveseat anyway; the room's not that big, and the loveseat makes it a pain to open and close the curtains and shades. I agree these chairs don't look too comfortable, so they're probably not my ideal reading chairs. But they'd be good for draping the bathrobe or pulling into the LR for extra seating. I love the idea of velvet, and maybe even the box-pleated skirt -- hadn't thought of that, cool idea, thank you! I agree that they're great in a pattern, but I don't want lots of patterns clashing in my bedroom, I don't think. What would you think of a tan velvet on the back and the bottom of the seat, and then the top, round seat cushion in something like this: Here is a link that might be useful: I'd use this pillow cover to reupholster the seat...

So does that mean you see something wrong with this sink? From many articles I've seen they said brand name doesn't matter and gauge really didn't always do much to help with sound and such either. Is there a difference between what this sink looks like and other sinks by some other brand that going to cost twice as much? Once the sink is mounted, what would make this sink better or worse than any other sink?

Without seeing a photo, I'm just guessing that the rug is probably too small. I think you should follow your instincts there. And I think I have to agree that the rug plus the table would be too much of the same, almost like the table is growing up out of the rug! Sorry ...

I love your current coffee table...and to me, you can never have enough texture. The rugs sound great! Let us know what you decide~~

Love your room and style - I would opt for a nice wool rug with muted colors - I think the richness and texture would be a great addition. I am not fond of the throw pillows and their style and color is limiting the rug choices...beautiful room though - the desk and they way you have arranged things - perfection.

I should have prefaced the LR picture. That is an old, old picture from about 4yrs or so ago.

The banana leaf table in that pic is in the basement. W/ more kids running around there just wasn't enough space for all of them and the coffee table (it's about 42" in diameter). Our current coffee table is this $2 find:

And I have 3 trunks in the attic that I've used for a coffee table at various times. The one that I'm thinking of is a big old white tool chest that has great moulding on it. It was one of my first auction buys w/ my mom almost 20yrs ago. It would also be a great space to store throws and extra pillows if I chose to use that one.

At any rate - last minute thought last night worked out great. I thought why not buy both and put them both in the LR for one large rug? There's no repeat pattern and I could quickly whipstitch the 2 together. DH was sweet enough to agree and went out and got the 2nd one for me (that was an ordeal when the store sold him the wrong rug - but he volunteered to go back and make sure that I got the right one - he's so sweet!). Looks great and I've ended up w/ a 10'x14' rug for $100.

I tried to take some pictures w/ DH's camera this morning but his battery was dead too!!!!! Fingers crossed this wjnd. or tonight I will get pictures of the rug, the requested blackboard and th erequested pic of my after Christmas sale feather trees!
