EcoSmart LED bulbs(Home Depot)

Anyone else tried these? I think I'm going to use them in a chandelier that is between 12 and 16 feet high. I don't want to have to change these bulbs. I need 15 for this fixture which is $300($20 x 15 bulbs). The color is a little different than the clear 40 watt incandescents which are a little redder. Most of the light from the EcoSmart seems to go up, which is good in this case as I think they will actually provide more light. They are rated for 50,000 hours. I only have one in the fixture now.

Considering the price per bulb you may want to look at CFL's that are enclosed.

I considered CFL. The ones in the link below are half the price of the EcoSmart but are rated for 8000 hrs vs. 50000 hrs for the EcoSmart. I don't plan on moving again. The CFL color temp is not as good and they also have a slow warmup time compared to the LEDs.

These weren't made specifically for Home Depot; rather HD took a product (Cree CR6) that was already available and rebranded it as EcoSmart and sold it with a shorter warranty (3 years rather than 5) at a somewhat lower price. Nobody here has found any evidence that the product itself is any different other than the box it's packaged in.

HD carries both the 2700K (warm white) and 5000K (daylight) versions of the CR-6. Both are rated at 625 lumens, draw 9.5 watts, and have CRI of 90+. Some folks prefer a higher color temp in task oriented areas. So you might consider the 5000K daylight version for the kitchen. But they do take a little 'getting used to'. I am currently converting the 4100K CFL cans in our kitchen to the 5000K CR-6. (Have 20+ 2700K CR-6s in the rest of the house.) One other thing to watch for: At least here in California, they are offered both in normal Edison-style screw-in, and also GU-24 plug in. Be sure to get the correct version for the cans you are using.

air tight trim is a joke in my opinion.I base this on having tested for air leakage with a blower door while sealing these lights & trims. the foam rubber gasket does little to stop the air leakage from exiting the trim. the best way I've found is to use the hardcast 1402 mastic tape to seal housing to the sheetrock. similar to how supply box is sealed in pic of previous posting. tape goes into edge of housing and overlaps to sheetrock. allow 1'2" overlap as trim will cover the tape. this with the ICAT recessed light will stop as much of the air leakage as possible. there will still be a small amount of leakage, but not enough to be of concern. note this when you look at the recessed lights again: Halo's insulation contact air tight lights have two things that identify them. no holes in housing and a orange sticker inside the can that says it is air tight. orange sticker, not red. the red sticker says air tight when used with the following trim kits. deceptive lableling IMO. reading the small print inside IC cans the trim kits include, insert/baffle to fit inside the can to address holes in housing (@$14 each) and air tight trim kit, not sure of cost. as the insert/baffle would be needed at every recessed light, buying ICAT makes better economical sense. installing the baffles is a pita. so add labor for that to cost. buy ICAT, use mastic tape in place of 'air tight' trim. if you are putting IC cans outside under porches patio, unconditioned space this is what happens. as the install of recessed lights is ongoing, the electrician mixes up the boxes. some inside are ICAT, some IC. same outside. make it easy on everyone and buy all ICAT. wasps like IC, but not so much ICAT, less air movement. the cost per contractor case between the two is minimal when you compare to retrofitting each IC to air tight. best of luck.

8,000 hours is a lot of hours and 50,000 is approaching infinity. LOL...

Most large high celing chandeliers are used less frequently and are less subject to the constant on/off of kitchen lighting or family room lamps. If that is the case with your chandelier you may be buying capacity you don't really need.

CFL's come in a variety of color temps and they will be seen indirectly in your application. Through shades or reflected off a wall.

I haven't lived in the house yet and am not sure exactly what kind of use the chandelier will get. The room also has 6 cans which I'm using CFL floods in(10,000 hour). They won't be easy to change either and I wish I had used the Cree LR4s instead.

I guess you could be right about using the CFLs in the chandelier but I think it will see a good bit of use. It is a large family room and the 6 CFL cans don't provide much light. I believe I will end up using the chandelier more than the cans since I know the bulbs are likely to last much longer in the chandelier.

I've had CFLs burn out way less than 8000 hours. I think the LED looks terrific in that light. Nice color!

I'd go for it.

Not sure if that is a dimmable LED bulb, but that may be a consideration for you too.

Yep, 8000 hours is an average. That means that the one I have in my music room that's been operating for 3 years now continuously (26,000h+) balances 3 of yours which may have failed the second you turned them on. :)

Your LED's 50,000 hours is also an average. LED lamps also have failure-prone components. Some of them will fail in 10h, 100h, 1000h ... and so on. There is no way to predict that a given unit will absolutely, certainly last 50000h. The best you can hope for is free replacement under warranty if it doesn't. (And BTW, the cost of that "free" replacement is built into the price you paid for the unit.)

Sorry, you can improve the odds - but nothing will guarantee that you'll never have to climb up there and change a bulb again.

That said, there are considerations for this kind of use entirely aside from service life.

First, on the plus side: I suspect that for a candelabra retrofit, the size of LEDs is advantageous, even though CFs have really shrunk in recent years.

A contraindication: LEDs are inherently directional, rather than having a spherical radiation pattern the way an incandescent filament or a glowing fluorescent envelope has. Thus downlights are a particularly appropriate use of LEDs. (I happen to think that downlights are a less than optimal way to light a room, but that's a totally separate issue.)

OK, enough rambling. :)
