HE4 Gas Dryer - No Heat

I have a Kenmore HE4 gas dryer. The dryer is 2 years old. Friday, the Sears repairman visited my home to conduct the annual maintenance checkup on both my washer and dryer. He pronounced both machines to be in good health. The first load I ran in the dryer, about 2 hours after the repairman left, there is no heat and the clothes are still wet after 40 minutes. Both the repairman and I ran the diagnostic and all seems to be OK. I am stumped. I did have heat in the dryer as of last Sunday, which was the last time it was used.

Any thoughts?

Yes, the gas valve is open.

It could be a few things.
Depending on the model number 110.xxxxxxxx

There are at least (2) thermal devices that could be bad.

How is the vent system ? clean ? length ? rigid metal ?

It could be the Glow-bar Ignitor (do you see it glowing) ?

It could be one of the set of Gas Valve Coils.

Thanks for your response. The model number is 110.95087402.

The vent connection from the dryer to the wall is flexible. The connection from the wall to the roof (maybe 12 feet at most)is rigid metal. My laundry room is on the 3rd floor (which is the highest floor) of my house.

My house is less than 2 years old. I do 4 loads a week. I doubt if the vent system is clogged.

I agree about calling a qualified repairman for messing with gas. This happened to me recently when my dryer was put back after 8 months due to remodelling. It was a blown solenoid. A simple repair for the repairman, but it did involve taking the machine apart.

It is important to keep your lint exhaust clean. At least every 6 months, take off the tubing, and vacuum it out. If you have a 'pipe' that lifts the exhaust to the roof (instead of straight out to an outdoor vent), it (outdoor roof exhaust pipe) should be professionally cleaned no less than once a year.

Jakvis - I appreciate your perspective on this. Now that I have had a couple of days to reflect, I agree that the technician could not have been too experienced. (The company got great feedback on AngiesList, but this guy may have been the exception.) I did mention the possibiity of bad coils as I explained the problem to him, so maybe I am partly to blame. But I would think he would have checked the flame with/without vent earlier in the service call. He was here close to 90 minutes, talking to a co-worker about the possibility of a bad motor, ignitor, etc. before he decided to check the vent. When he determined that it was a vent issue, he took out the new coils that he had installed and put my old ones back in. Seemed to me that he might have asked me first if I wanted to keep the new ones, but he didn't. And I was too frustrated at that point to even think about asking to keep them. Fortunately, I was "only" charged for a service call - $69. At that point, I was just glad he wasn't charging by the hour...

Is your condo on its own gas service? If so a service man maybe can bump the pressure a little. We don't know how many BTU your old dryer was or how much more Btu this dryer is. If your gas line is to small you might have to resize it. You will have to have a tech check this out to advise you. later paulbm

Since the dryer stopped heating after it was inspected, I would assume that it has something to do with the inspection. My first thought is a connection inside the machine may have been loosened or disconnected. Did the repair person check inside that everything was securely connected?

Was the flexible vent crushed when the Dryer was pushed back into place ?

The repairman left about 2 hours ago. It was a blown fuse that sits on the exhaust housing. It was a 15 minute fix.

Those fuses are for overheat protection and don't generally blow without a reason. Were possible causes also investigated? Obstructed vent, failed operating thermostat, etc.

The same thing ran through my mind. The serviceman ran all kinds of tests with some type of meter he brought with him and could not find anything that would have blown the fuse. The repairman who was here on Friday was pressing lots of buttons, more than one at a time. Maybe that was the cause. Who knows? Anyway, I have done 3 or 4 loads of wash over the last 3 days and the dryer is working as it should.
