Hi WRF, This is a Cogshall Mango...also known for a semi dwarf size. I've never tasted it, but have read that it is very good tasting and I wanted a tree that would be a little easier to manage/prune. The freeze damaged it severely, but as you can see "thank goodness" it is alive and recovering nicely...you can see by its growth habit it should stay manageable...hopefully! I protected this with Christmas lights and a Frost Cover, and still got hit really bad! I attached a link to Pine Island Nursery, its a great website for reading on the different varieties they have and how they rate them...of course taste is subjective, but it will give you an idea of what to expect. All my mango trees are very young. Planted only 9-12 months ago. None of them, with the exception of one has flowers. Most of them do not have flowers but have new growth. I am guessing is because it is very young, which is fine since I don't want them to bear fruit when it is very small. I would prefer for all the energy to go to the growth of the trees. The only one that has blooms is one I have potted. I will also be removing the flowers so that the tree can get a little bigger. I am guessing that your Mallika and Alphonso are like my two Cogshall. They are "Dwarf" varieties and grow very slowly. Mine does not have any new growths on it at this time. I am hoping in a month or so I will get them? I have no answer as to why your one Kent is putting out very small growth flushes, when the other one is not. One possible answer, could it have been mislabled and in fact a different variety? Or maybe for some reason its not getting enough nutrients in the root system. You might want to talk to the people from Pine Island Nursery in Miami. They are great and will help you when you have questions about Mangos or other tropical trees. I have called them( or email them) several times. They are always willing to help. I'm sure others will offer their advise, I have only been growing these for less than a year, so I am also learning. Good luck! Sounds like you have a nice selection of Mango trees. I LOVE THEM!!

You can keep just about anything in a container if the needs are met. Mangoes are to be pruned back after blooming/fruiting so take the opportunity to prune it way back to give you a more compact plant. A pic would help. Go up one size container for now. As for a planting mix...just make sure it drains really well. Osmocote slow release would probably be fine. Get on the web and check for sure when the recommended fert times are. In Thailand they are cutting back large, mature trees pretty much back to only a trunk to revitalize the tree. So they can handle the pruning.

I think you're right. The sexually reproduced one is usually bigger, and won't necessarily grow true. Gary
