I think they are self sufficient. :) I had a couple of flowers on my little mango before the freeze. I just put it in the ground and now it's really flowering like mad. I can see some little mango buds forming. I know I should remove them and not encourage fruiting for the first couple of years but....I just can't wait to see fruit!

You can have only one mango, you don't need two.
If you plant it on the ground, you have to be ready when cold temperatures arrive to protect it. Mangoes are very cold sensitive.
I lost mine due to the freeze that we had.
Recently I got two, and I keep them in pots till they are bigger. I have the variety 'Carrie' and 'Nam Doc Mai'.

The Carrie mango that I had was only 1 year old and didn't make it through the freezes that we had.
I tried in another place, it has a nice flavor and is stringless. I like its growth habit, more suitable for small spaces.

I grew up eating mangoes, the ones I remember, are small, the size of a tangerine, juicy and delicious. Unfortunately, I have not seen it for sale anywhere.

Haitian mangoes are very good too!

I would choose Nam Doc for taste, Carrie for size of the tree.

Hi WRF,

This is a Cogshall Mango...also known for a semi dwarf size. I've never tasted it, but have read that it is very good tasting and I wanted a tree that would be a little easier to manage/prune. The freeze damaged it severely, but as you can see "thank goodness" it is alive and recovering nicely...you can see by its growth habit it should stay manageable...hopefully!

I protected this with Christmas lights and a Frost Cover, and still got hit really bad!

I attached a link to Pine Island Nursery, its a great website for reading on the different varieties they have and how they rate them...of course taste is subjective, but it will give you an idea of what to expect. Good luck with your selection!

I am so happy for you! Your mango is recovering nicely.
From the 2 mangoes that I got, they are the same size, same price. One, the Carrie has flowers, the other one don't.
I will still keep them in the pot, till next Spring.

Thanks Silvia...I was so excited also, I actually have a Glenn that is a lot more damaged that the Cogshall, but it is also recovering, but at a much slower pace.

Watermelon, have you decided what variety you want to get?
Sometimes the big box stores carry mango trees, I bought a small 3 gallon at Lowe's for $30 last year, I've also seen it at WM and HD...Good luck!

I had a Dwarf Carrie mango until yesterday. The guy cutting down a tree in the area managed to kill it. I'm going to call the nursery that I got it from and see what they have. Frustrating, but it was only here 5 months, just want to get a new one settled in for the high growth rainy season.
