track for sliding pendant from side to side?

I want to install a traditional light pendant, but would like to have the option of sliding it from side to side. What can I use? If I could also add something to it that could easily adjust the height, that would be great. The ceiling is a suspended ceiling with 2'x2' acoustical tile, but right where I'd like the pendent to be, there's a grill for an air duct. Maybe I can attach a little hook or something, but I'd like to hear if there are any more orthodox solutions to this.

You can use a line voltage track system. They make special clips to go on the framework of suspended ceilings. Below you will find a link to the utility hook that can be used to hold the fixture, which is wired through the center, if it is chain held. This hook is rated for approximately 25-35 lbs so check with the manufacturer that you decide to go with.

This is probably the easiest system to use so that you can get the fixture slid from side to side. If you want to raise the fixture (and it is chain held), you can just lift it and put the links on the hook. If you think that it will not hold it well, then you can add another utility hook for that purpose.

If the fixture is on a cord, you can use a second hook and loop it over, although it isn't very attractive.

If you have a low voltage fixture, look up the parts and you can do the same thing.

The parts are made by Nora, Halo, Lightolier and Juno. However, if you purchase one system, you cannot add from another system, as they are different. The only ones that are compatible are Nora and Halo. You can also check out WAC for parts because they make them for all of these manufacturers.

Whether they work properly is dependent on The rated voltage (eg- 120, 12, 24, ...) for the system as both the bulb and wiring for the track and pendants assume a particular voltage. If you decide on a low voltage system, there is a transformer that has to be purchased as well.

We used hanging pendants made by Roost. They only sell to wholesalers who then retail them. We bought ours locally, via our builder, from a design center so got a deal. Don't know hwat you can find in your area, but I have provided an online link below. We also used the Edison-reproduction, multi-filament bulbs they show in the pic. They are about 11 bucks each w/ shipping, but look waaaaaaay cool, esp. when dimmed, and provide all the light you need when at full power. If you go that way, order some spares. We have not had a burnout in 4 years, but we do not use them daily. Also, we did not want a track sitting across our ceiling to steal the eye away from the task lighting hanging below. Pendant lighting over sink, different from over peninsula?

What's the wattage of the mosaic mini pendant? I would think using the light that mimics your vent hood would probably look okay if the sink isn't too close to the peninsula, assuming the wattage is high enough of course. The only concern I would have is a pendant over me instead of over the sink area; might not give appropriate light. Is the vent working? If not, could you take it out? Or maybe doing two smaller recessed lights on either side of that vent (depending how big it is across your sink area) would work better; then you would have the light properly over the sink? Hope those thoughts are of some help...

@ RL - very good points re: cleaning. @groveraxle - goodness, I love your candor. Here's the thing. Those are knock-off Beat pendants and they're served me over the last 5 years but I'm ready for an update. They are also very low wattage so provide very little down lighting. I'm also SUPER fussy about finishes matching, and I'm doing chrome faucets and pulls. I don't like brushed + chrome look lol. I'm picky-picky. We have vaulted 16+ foot ceilings and the space feels large at over 20 feet long (even though the island breaks up the middle), I really feel like we need pendants over the island to break up the space. But I am definitely going to hold off on the pendants over the eating bar. @Patricia Colwell - i love that look but probably for another room. Thank you so much everyone!
