Pendant lighting over sink, different from over peninsula?

Ack! Every time I think I've finally made the LAST decision on the new house, turns out there was something that slipped through. I am very close to having a reveal to post of our river rock granite kitchen. It is WONDERFUL, I'm delighted with how it is coming together. The undercabinet lights are in, the lights in the two glass showcase cabinets are in, the pendant lights over the peninsula just went up, and I was all "squeee!!!" until I found out that we were supposed to pick out a light for over the sink, and hadn't. It's wired, there is a switch, I want the extra light there, but I didn't know until a few minutes ago that I need to pick one out.

The easy answer is to use the same mini pendant as over the peninsula, but I'm not sure that is best. They are a mosaic accent, and don't throw a wide light. They are this shape mosaic:http://images.lowes.com/product/converted/884656/884656900866lg.jpg

and are three single pendants, but are more like this color:

I love them where they are, but wonder if it might be a big busy over the sink.

On a different wall than the sink, we have a brushed nickel and glass range hood that looks pretty much like this (not sure if the same model, but close): http://www.pullsdirect.com/imagebase/resized/330x320/hafeleimages/hafele_500_30_763.jpg

There is a bit of a green that pops in the edge of the glass on the hood. So I was wondering if something like this might tie in with the range hood, and be a bit quieter over the sink than the mosaics: http://www.arcadianlighting.com/pg-p5011-09.html

Or maybe it's too small and I want a wider light over the sink? One issue is that there is a metal ceiling vent for a fan over the sink, so the ceiling mount for the pendant light will have to be centered more over the standing area than faucet area, if that makes sense.

Would really appreciate the wisdom and guidance and inspiration of the TKO on this one. I hope to have reveal pictures soon!!!!

Will it look weird/wrong to have a different pendant over the sink than I have over the peninsulas?

What's the wattage of the mosaic mini pendant? I would think using the light that mimics your vent hood would probably look okay if the sink isn't too close to the peninsula, assuming the wattage is high enough of course. The only concern I would have is a pendant over me instead of over the sink area; might not give appropriate light. Is the vent working? If not, could you take it out? Or maybe doing two smaller recessed lights on either side of that vent (depending how big it is across your sink area) would work better; then you would have the light properly over the sink?

If you have screw in recessed can fixtures and want to visualize the mini pendants without doing the can tearout first--you can pick up a couple of recessed can/mini pendant light conversion kits--Lowes carries a couple (nickel Model #: MPA-1PNK or antique bronze [Model #: MPA-1JBZ]) with no bulb or shade that screws into the existing edison socket, has a decorative base that covers the recessed can. You can play with different light shades as well. We did this for our remodel, and never bothered to do the formal can tearout. I think there may be other conversion kits at Lowes, but the cover and the shade did not match our kitchen. Hope this helps.

I know that to meet electrical code, where there is water around electricity, you have to be careful. Which is why they do not want a chandelier fixture over a bathtub, things like that. And, even though you are short, your arms and reach are just like taller folks. Plus, you have big cookie sheets and trays which you will be washing at the kitchen sink, and you do not want to hit them on the light fixture. Just for safety sake, plan on keeping it at least 30 inches above your counter top. I think with Candace Olsen she said with a chandelier to keep a chandelier 30 inches above the surface of a dining table, so you have an unimpeded view of folks across the table from you. Working this out, a counter top is 36 inches high. Then you put the fixture 30 inches above that, and it is 5.5 feet from the floor. If you are taller than 5 feet 6 inches, you raise it up so you have a clear view out the window. I'm thinking with a seven foot ceiling, the pendant would be 12 inches below the ceiling, should you have a window over your sink. I might be missing something here, but when I do my kitchen, I have an 8 foot 2 inch ceiling to deal with, and I want a garden window so I can see all the birds at my feeders in the garden outside there. If it is going to be a problem, think about a different kind of focused light to shine on your task at the sink.

i-chic, however did you find that bat fixture!?! DH looked at it for a moment and then said, "Hey, why not?" until he saw the price. The size fixtures we're looking at right now are more like those shown above by birkie_2006, and we'd hang them lower exactly like that (thanks, birkie!). I checked out kitchenkelly's fixtures, and I love how those three tiny pendants look above her sink in that pretty, airy kitchen, but I think they might get lost in our situation, which probably will turn out to be very woody and bricky--altogether a "heavier" looking kitchen with darker colors. Frankly, I'd like to wait until the cabinets go up before making the final decision. It just seems like all the decisions are interrelated. If I don't pick the fixtures now (standard incandescent? electronic low voltage?), then I also can't pick the appropriate dimmer switches that are going to control them (dimmer switches mandated by California Title 24). Well, I guess the builder can install any old switch temporarily and use our old fixtures for light until we figure out which way is up. Why is our last decision--lighting--the hardest?

How many pendant lights over 9'6" peninsula?

I wouldn't exceed 6" in diameter. Depends on your ceiling height as well. However, if it is 8ft or so I'd stick with 5 to 6" in diameter depending on your space. I'd select fixtures that work best for the space. If there is not a lot of other lighting in the space then you want open or clear glass lights. If there is decent light from cans or..... and you want down lighting you can select cones or similar in metal fixtures.
