That is a gorgeous butterfly. My Buddleia is full of butterflies at the moment and my hummingbird feeder has a couple regular visitors.

In the spring I saw a hummingbird moth, but couldn't get a picture. It was an interesting little beastie.

I adore hostas, too. I have several. Unfortunately our hot, dry, sunny spring has burned some. I did manage to save others from the deer. I found the damn deer had eaten all my impatiens and were starting on the new hydrnagea. I covered all the "deer candy' with netting so that has spared them so far.

You must not have a deer problem or you would not be growing hosta. How about posting a photo of your garden? I'd love to see it. I have never heard of fenegreek.

I've seen hummingbird moths before and did not know what they were. At least they looked similar to the photo you posted Their little faces looked like a mouse! One landed on my sleeve once and that little face freaked me out!

Anyone ever read Silence of the Lambs? Hummingbird moth hawk moth, sphinx moth are all similar and members of the same species.
But that beautiful orange creature is a butterfly not a moth.

Do you think the butterfly in the photo I've linked is yours, Teresa? They look very much alike to me. If it is, that guy is really far from home! Everything I've read says that their habitat is Southeast Asia--Borneo, Malaysia, Singapore--Australia, India. And I didn't find anything about migratory behavior. So maybe he's here on a tourist visa!

Wow Maureen! It does look like the ones I saw. The one I got a close look at had the 4 black dots at the base of the wings. I wonder how they ended up here? I've never seen anything that colorful here.

This spring, right after getting some of my flowers planted, I saw what I first thought was a baby hummingbird.
Yup, it was a hummingbird moth. I had never seen one before.

lindac - I don't believe anyone is calling the photo I posted a moth. I said it was a butterfly as did dedtired. The moth comments were referring to the link dedtired posted......not my link to the orange butterfly. Dedtired was just adding comments about having seen a moth and linked a photo.

Yup -- Theresa is the beautiful butterfly and I am the lowly moth. I just watched Silence again a couple weeks ago. What a creepy movie!!!

I love butterflies and hummingbirds. They are just so special.

dedtired - If you don't have a honeysuckle vine you should get one. The hummingbirds battle each other for the vine. And the butterflies love them also. I have Mandarine HS vine, Orange Trumpet HS vine and two others whose names I can't remember at the moment. If you keep them fertilized they are loaded with blooms all summer.
