How sad...what is wrong w/google? They "highlight" all kinds of other "random" days. This is actually disgraceful, IMHO!

When I think of Lincoln's birthday, I remember the cutouts of his profile we used to put on the windows of the classroom when I went to grade school. Isn't that funny? It WAS a bigger deal back in those days wasn't it?

Since we started to have Presidents Day, the actual birthdates have been ignored. I think it's a shame,since it has only become a day off for some now. Yes, it was a big deal then, and I really think we were better for it.

IMO, it is sad that we celebrate Martin Luther King, Jr.'s birthday, but we have to combine the celebration for George Washington and Abraham Lincoln--the two most popular and influential presidents ever.

Its easy to see why our elected officials prefer "Presidents Day" to "Abraham Lincolns Birthday"

If we still called it "Lincolns Birthday" some fool would make the mistake of referring to "Honest Abe" and they would all be on the spot trying to explain to the Americal People what an Honest Politician is.

I always remember it because it was also my Dad's birthday, now it is a sad day for me because my Daddy died just a couple of days before his birthday and right now my Mom is in the hospital in the ICU. I am not liking Feb.

It's my daughter's birthday too. I wanted her to be a Valentine baby but Lincoln was one of my favorite presidents so it worked out.

Wanda, I have to disagree with you. I don't think enough states celebrate MLK's birthday, even though it is a national holiday. It was a big deal in CA but not in Iowa. I kind of liked that they combined Lincoln and Washington's birthdays into President's Day. You can only have so many school holidays without going to school longer in the year.

When I was in school, back in Ye Olden Tymes, both Feb 12 (Lincoln) and Feb 22 (Washington) were celebrated as holidays/ school closed. Now my local schools close for a week and call it "Presidents' Week". Signifies nothing, except a nice long holday for teachers and a week of scrambling baby sitters for working parents.

The family has changed in a generation. Now both parents tend to work. So years ago, our school district decided to do the holiday in such a way as to create a 3 day weekend for families, and then the national holiday was set that way too. We try to make as many school holidays next to the weekend as possible for families to have mini trips or visit grandma, etc. If the day off is in the middle of the week, we found that families just skipped school from the holiday to one or the other weekend, if not both. That became a considerable financial loss to the budget too.

President's Day is not simply a day to combine Washington's and Lincoln's birthdays. It's a day to honor all presidents.
It was changed 50 years ago and it came about when Congress changed the recognition of only Washington's birthday to the third Monday of Feb. Lincoln's Day wasn't changed.

The schools in my community, according to the kids who actually attend them, have Lincoln's Day activities every year.

I went to Chicago schools I honestly don't remember if we were closed on Lincoln's or Washington's birthdys I do remember lots of assemblies and programs .

"Lincoln" still sells. One of the best books I ever read is "How Lincoln Learned to Read".

Lincoln is only one of the famous people outlined. It's not just about learning to read. It's about what influenced these people's thinking and the early education they got both in and outside of school. Fascinating!

In the 1940s, I attended a one room country grade school in ILLINOIS. The two presidents that got play were Washington and Lincoln. And the US flag had 48 stars. One year, the image of Gen. McArthur graced our final report cards. The world was as unsafe and insecure back then as it is now, but parents tended to shield their children from the impending doom. During WW2, the outcome was not a given; The Allies could have lost. During the Korean Police Action, it could have blown into a nuclear war involving Korea, China, USSR, and USA.

Here I've been thinking that in a democratic state, it's to be the representatives of the people where supreme power lies.

Heck ... you don't even get to vote for your big shot - just vote for a bunch o' (mostly) guys that vote for their choice of leader.

As for us ... about 349/350 of our voting areas don't get to vote for our big shot, either.

S/He runs for office in one of the voting areas, same as everyone else who want to run our government ...

... and when the voting's over, the leader of the party with the most seats gets to be Prime Minister.

With several parties, often we have a parliament where not one party has a majority of seats, so they need cooperation from at least some of the others to make things happen.

Our Prime Minister has gained a bit of a reputation for liking things to happen in his way.

After an election a few years ago in which he'd gained a minority of seats and said right after that he was going to be cooperative ...

... a few months down the road, he more of less stuck the various others parties either in the eye or the rear-end (take your pick) with a sharp stick.

The other parties got so upset about that ... that they said that they were going to join together and outvote him ... and when that happens on an important issue, the other guys (with a few gals) often get a chance to try to run the government ... or they have to hold another election.

There was a great to-do about how ... don't those other guys realize that he was elected by a majority, so should get to govern??

But - only a minority of voters voted for his guys (and a few gals) ... so if the other folks could make their gathering stick, they could have governed.

He put Parliament on hold for a while ...

... then started up again ...

... and he's still going!

Careful when you're planning an omelette - if you get too frisky - you may end up with egg on your face!
