decorating a family hangout that is not in the basement

We are finishing construction of our new home on 6 acres. The exterior shows the look of a comfortable, low maintenance, traditional home--brick and stone, covered back and front porches. I need help with what I like to call our Rec Room. Most would say Living Room b/c it is in view of our large, open kitchen--but is still a separate room. [We also have a separate living area where the adults will hang when we have company or when our family wants to be more cozy and watch tv together (fireplace, carpet, etc).] As for the Rec Room I do not know how to decorate this "fun" without coming off looking like a child's play room. My kids are 8,11, and 15. This is a room for fun, games, ballgames, hanging out. We are a baseball family and would love to incorporate this somehow. The floors are natural cherry, there are large windows all along side one wall, crown molding in a cinnamon stain, wall color is called crescent by Sh Will, a built in granite desk top in a nook, and a game closet w/ door to hide gaming. I think leather will be purchased in mb a chocolate brown? Any ideas on decorating touches?

I think you can give it a whimsical mood without having it look like a "playroom." Leather furniture is good! You could lighten the mood with a bright accent color like lime green or aqua blue (of course I don't know what other colors are going on in your kitchen, but just throwing out suggestions). Fun artwork or framed family photos... a bright/funky area rug... etc. Maybe some vintage baseball posters, if you could find something like that? Check out art.com or etsy.com and search for "baseball." In a room like this, I also think it's great to have a few small ottomans that can be moved around. Home Decorators is a good resource, as is Overstock.

Does your family have a favorite baseball team? I'd maybe look to see if you couldn't find a autographed shirt or a ball from that team. The shirt I'd frame in a shadow box and use as art. The ball.....put it in a see thru ball box and use as a display piece on the shelves.
Use a throw in the color of your favorite team, pillows too. Infact any of the soft things in the room, rugs curtains could be in the teams color.
I've seen some cute lamps made from stacked baseballs.
You could even look at collecting your favorite baseball cards and putting them into a nice frame and displaying them as a piece of art.
The key I think is to not to OVER do it. Keep it grown up but fun at the same time. Stay away from the metal trashcans with team logos, and hundreds of baseball caps hung in the room. Keep it more subtle.

Wonderful ideas - thank you! Love the Man Shed... maybe I can move James and his tv out to a Man Treehouse or a Man Shed? lol. Once he took his coke and pretzels and went and sat in his car when I had the girls over. No one knew where he went. He's a good boy :) It was terribly pathetic to see him sitting there all alone, but very loving :) He's not a sports fan, thankfully and there is already a fridge down there - we're more than halfway there :) I agree about lamps and fuzzy rugs. The fabric is a great idea - I wonder if I can drape it at the ceiling to create a softer ceiling than just floor joists and tons of pipes, wires, ducts etc. Luckily all the walls are either drywalled (not well, but it's something) or concrete bricks. you guys are the best - thanks for all your help!

Thanks for the advice - drywall is not an option right now with this timeframe...our son is in college and our daughter is a junior in high school so at this point, we won't be finishing the basement. We do have a bonus media/pool table room on the first floor so this is the usual teen hangout --it's just not big enough for dancing. I did buy some silver tarps and some beige drop cloths to see which one will work better. I was planning on stapling them to the floor joists above. There are some hvac ducts and pipes that we will have to work around so we would need to cut the material to fit around these. I was thinking of trimming this out with duct tape if we use the tarps and with patterned burlap ribbon if we use the drop cloths. Are we safe to have the tarps or fabric next to the hvac ducts? Found a cool large silver ornament that looks like a disco ball on sale at Hobby Lobby and bought 5 strings of white lights so far. The main problem is hiding the storage area. Budget permitting, of course, and IF there is a drain access already nearby/available, you might consider adding a powder room (if there isn't already one in the basement). IF there is nothing but space beneath the stairs and/or if there is a water heater -- water supply line -- there, adding your powder room adjacent to that closet -- perhaps an "L" shaped room, with the door facing the side wall rather than the larger room, enabling the toilet to not be seen from the doorway or the activity room would be well worth considering.

I agree with PP about the baseball theme. I think if you did more of a vintage baseball theme, it would also appear more "grown-up". Maybe you can find some vintage(or reproduction) memorabilia from your team and use that to decorate the room. Maybe a "vintage"popcorn cart (they sell them all over the net and they will be functional as well)and things to reference peanuts and cracker jacks etc.
