It sounds like you are off on the right foot. ;-) Nearly anything you can make in your regular oven you can make in a Solar Oven.

I have three solar ovens - the Sun Oven, Tulsi Hybrid (has an electric back-up so the temperature doesn't fall into an unsafe cooking temperature), and a bowl-shaped "Hot Pot" Solar Cooker (great for soup, stews, chili, etc...) and I do as much cooking in them as possible to save on utilities.

Be sure to sign up for the Sun Oven (electronic) Newsletter because it's always full of recipes and information.

--Avoid cooking strong-smelling veggies like broccoli, cabbage and sprouts because they develop an AWFUL odor!!!!

--For better browning of the top crust and to lessen condensation in the oven, use DARK bread pans (I found mine at Big Lots) in matched sets and place one upside-down as a cover and secure it with steel binder clips.

--Most foods you cook are fairly forgiving with the temperature so don't require constant repositioning of the oven, especially if it is cooked in a pot with a lid to hold in the temperature, but if something requires constant high heat, you will need to re-focus the oven about every 15-minutes. Set your timer as a reminder, if necessary. I wear a Polder timer around my neck.

I keep my Sun Oven and the Tulsi on a metal tool cart on wheels for easy moving, and be sure to lock the wheels. The "Hot Pot" is on an old, heavy Formica-covered Lazy-Susan we used for a small TV eons ago, and I can turn the Lazy-Susan to track the sun, and I have a way to hold the position (so get creative to make it easy for yourself). I strap my ovens to the cart with bungee cords to keep them from taking flight when winds are high, or to prevent a curious neighborhood cat from knocking the unit off the cart. I keep my heat-resistant OVE Gloves, sun glasses and a visor to shield my eyes on the shelf for when I get into the solar ovens. I also keep a rimmed cookie sheet on the lower shelf to place the cooked items on to transport from the oven to the house. If I spill something enroute, it will be on the cookie sheet. If you have a silicon baking sheet or silicon hot pads, place these on the rimmed baking sheet and your glass dishes or pans won't slide.

OVE gloves are a better choice than a hot pad or mitt because they have fingers which make opening and closing the oven much SAFER and easier.

You may want to get into the habit of moving the oven away from the sun when you open it in order to avoid glare from the oven wings, or release the wings. I also wear a pair of sunglasses and a visor (or a brimmed hat) on my head to protect my eyes from the sun rays.

--Food cooks faster when humidity is low, and may take longer if it is humid.

--In the winter I'll add bricks that are painted with black heat-resistant paint used for repainting BBQ grills to increase and help hold the temperature.

--Choose fairly small, uniform in size potatoes and bake them in a clean (only used for this purpose) black sock.

--ALWAYS preheat the oven before placing food inside to cook/bake. Sometimes I'll add a small pan of whole almonds to the oven and will toast them in a little coconut oil while the oven is preheating.

--I can cook a variety of grains, beans, soup, etc. in quart jars that I have painted the OUTSIDE black with heat-resistant paint used for refinishing BBQ grills. (You can also use these jars for heating water - nice when you are camping). Place a small square of foil with some vent holes poked in it over the top. You can also place a canning lid and ring on the top. The rubber seal allows excess pressure to be released, but a low increase in pressure is retained and actually helps speed cooking - as another option. ONLY use real canning jars which are made of tempered glass, not the one-trip or single-use jars from the store.

--It's almost apple season and this is a favorite recipe.

APPLE CUSTARD
1 (13-oz.) can evaporated milk (I use double-strength reconstituted powdered milk)
1/3 c. honey (OR agave nectar or palm sugar nectar or sweetener of choice)
4 eggs
1 t. vanilla
1/2 t. cinnamon (OR apple pie spice or cardamom)
3-4 c. apple slices
Blend ingredients (EXCEPT apples) for a few seconds in a blender. Place apples in a dark baking dish/pan. Pour liquid mixture over the sliced apples. Cover, place in solar oven and cook about 1-1/2 to 2 hours. (I like to use my "Hot Pot" for this recipe.)

-- For large cuts of meat (or making a number of chicken breasts, thighs or legs) I like to place them in a plastic Oven Bag (follow their instructions for cutting vent holes and preparing the bag with flour). Set the bag with the meat inside a dark cake or lasagna pan or small dark roasting pan. For a small turkey breast or turkey tenderloins I add coarsely chopped onion, celery and carrot to the bottom of the bag and sprinkle liberally with sage (or poultry spice), salt and pepper and place the meat on top (brush oil or melted butter on the top of the meat). This mixture in the bottom of the bag will help season the drippings.

--I like to place silicon muffin cups inside a regular muffin pan and bake the batter inside the silicon cups. Works best if you have a dark muffin tin. I also bake individual meatloaf "cups" and several other muffin cup recipes this way.

--Beans, which normally take a lot of time, will cook quicker if you sprout them first, rather than using the normal overnight soak method. They are also higher in nutrition and easier to digest.

There's probably more information, but that's off the top of my head. If you have any questions, fire away :-).

I have a solar furnace. It can grill hot dogs, steaks, burgers ----.

Basically it is a very large Fresnel lens concentrating solar ray much the same way as using a magnifying glass to light a match.

Go to youtube and do a search on fresnel lens solar cooker, grill, furnace.

You can buy the lens for $100, or you can go to your town dump, find an old large screen TV, rear projection type, there is a Fresnel lens in front of the screen for free.

Save money using a toaster oven?

As another option besides a toaster oven... I have a Sharp Convection/Microwave (with ventilation fan), that is placed over the range, and I use it more than my range oven. Yes, it's more expensive than a toaster oven or a counter top microwave/convection (which I have also owned and loved), but it's much more versatile and doesn't take up any counter space. I can bake a loaf of bread in it in 20-minutes, 2 loaves in 25-minutes, and NO preheating, so there is a considerable amount of energy savings there if all you consider is the time used. Since it's a much smaller appliance, you are heating less air space, so there is a considerable savings there. As a test, I recently baked a loaf of bread in my Zojirushi Bread Machine to see how much it cost to use this small appliance, and it cost .02-cents using .35 KWH. Since the baking cycle is so long on the Zo (62-67 minutes - and that's where the primary amount of energy is consumed), the next time I bake a loaf of bread in the Sharp Convection/Microwave, I'll put the Kill-A-Watt Meter on my Sharp and see how much it costs to bake a loaf of bread in it. To find out exactly how much an appliance costs to run, a Kill-A-Watt Meter will give you the exact cost. You set it with what YOUR electricity cost is and it calculates the time, amount used, and the total cost for that time. I've used the Kill-A-Watt Meter to check all our major appliances to see if they were energy hogs. We heat our home with a Sun Cloud Infrared Heater for .02-cents an hour (tested it for 543-hours). Our refrigerator costs .07-cents a day to run (a 507-hour test). In the Sharp, most baked goods will bake in at least 25% less time, and some even less time than that, so another savings. I start checking for doneness when half the traditional baking time has passed. It's a major improvement over a toaster oven OR a microwave because you can microwave, bake, and broil in it in a much larger scale. It will hold a 12-cup muffin pan, 13x9 cake pan, or a tube pan. On Low Mix Bake, it combines convection heat with microwave power, so the baking quality is much better than when we baked in microwaves. This setting is used for baked goods that require more than 20-minutes baking time. Angel food and bundt cakes, quick breads and yeast breads. This selection will bake in 25-50% less time than a traditional oven. High Mix Bake, also combines convection heat with microwave power and provides crisp brown exteriors and juiciness for meats. Use this selection for roasts, whole turkey and chicken. They cook in about half the time. Convection ONLY cooking includes the convection benefit of a high-speed fan which circulates past the heat source and around the food. The super-heated air browns and crisps the food. This feature is used for foods that bake in 20-minutes or less. I can bake 2 12-inch sheets of cookies at a time (I use two Air-bake pizza pans lined with parchment paper) and cookies generally bake in 1/2 the time as in the oven. This setting is used for cookies, biscuits, cupcakes and small muffins. I loved my Black & Decker Toaster Oven and used it all the time for small baking - UNTIL - I got my Sharp Convection/Microwave. The toaster oven doesn't see the light of day now. -Grainlady

What is your FAVOURITE Pasta Recipe
Q
Comments (25)
These are three of my all time favourite pasta dishes. The Penne is served at our favourite Italian restaurant and is remarkably good for being so simple. Gina's Lemon Scampi is often on our menu. So easy and fast but oh so good! The Puttanesca is for nights I'm feeling naughty. I usually serve it with chicken or veal Parmesan. Penne Calabrese 2 pound Italian sausage -- Sliced In 1/4 Inch PiECES 4 cups plum tomatoes -- Peeled And crushed 1 sweet red pepper -- sliced 1 sweet yellow pepper -- sliced 1 jalapeno -- sliced thinly 1 1/2 pound penne olive oil Grated Parmesan Combine all ingredients except olive oil and penne. Cook over low heat for 2 - 3 hours. Cook the penne and drain, toss with the olive oil. Toss penne with the sauce and serve with gated Parmesan. Lemon Linguine With Scampi (Gina) Vegetable oil 1 TBSP kosher salt plus 1/2 teaspoons 3/4 lb linguine 3 TBSP unsalted butter 2 1/2 TBSP good olive oil 1 1/2 TBSP minced garlic (4 cloves) 1 lb large shrimp (about 16 shrimp) -- peeled 1/4 tsp freshly ground black pepper 1/3 cup chopped fresh parsley leaves 1/2 lemon -- zest grated 1/4 cup freshly squeezed lemon juice (2 lemons) 1/4 lemon -- thinly sliced in half-rounds 1/8 tsp hot red pepper flakes Drizzle some oil in a large pot of boiling salted water, add 1 tablespoon of salt and the linguine, and cook for 7 to 10 minutes, or according to the directions on the package. Meanwhile, in another large (12-inch), heavy-bottomed pan, melt the butter and olive oil over medium-low heat. Add the garlic. Saute for 1 minute. Be careful, the garlic burns easily! Add the shrimp, 1/2 teaspoons of salt, and the pepper and saute until the shrimp have just turned pink, about 5 minutes, stirring often. Remove from the heat, add the parsley, lemon zest, lemon juice, lemon slices, and red pepper flakes. Toss to combine. When the pasta is done, drain the cooked linguine and then put it back in the pot. Immediately add the shrimp and sauce, toss well, and serve. Pasta Puttanesca 1 pound spaghetti or linguine 2 Cans best grade Italian plum tomatoes 1/4 cup best quality olive oil 1 teaspoon oregano 1/8 teaspoon red pepper flakes (or to taste) 1/2 cup black olives, Sliced 1/4 cup capers, drained 4 garlic cloves, minced 8 anchovy fillets , chopped coarsely (or less) 1/2 cup Italian parsley, chopped Drain the tomatoes and cut in half. Combine the tomatoes and olive oil in a skillet and bring to a boil. Keep the sauce at a boil and add all remaining ingredients except pasta, stirring as you add. Reduce heat and simmer until the sauce has reached a consistency you like. Meanwhile bring 4 quarts salted water to the boil. Cook pasta until tender but still firm. Drain and toss with sauce. Serve immediately with fresh grated parmesan.

Question re double ovens: How much use do they both get?
Q
Comments (21)
Late to the party, but my 2 cents worth.... We have double ovens and use them both several times a week...usually at the same time. They're both used at the same time for a variety of reasons: (1) I'm using speed cook in one and convection in the other (2) I'm roasting in one & baking in the other (3) I'm using two very different temperatures (4) I'm baking so many items that I need both ovens (5) Anything that gets put directly on the rack for baking (like pizza) for the family goes in the bottom oven; if it's for me (gluten-free), it goes in the top oven. Sure, I could probably use just one...but then I'd have to wait around for round 1 to get done b/f round 2. It saves me a lot of time and foods are done around the same time I don't have to go back and reheat the items that were done in round 1. And, yes, I did live with one oven but I would always sigh (grumble a little) and tell myself...I can't wait until we can afford to remodel & get double ovens! (It became even more of an issue when I was diagnosed w/Celiac Disease.) [I have the GE Profile Trivection Double Ovens. It has a speed cook on top and convection on the bottom. Top can be used as speed cook/broil, convection single/multi/roast, or traditional. Bottom can be used as convection single/multi/roast, or traditional.] If you are considering getting a MW/Convection or Advantium as your second oven, remember this....*** If you are using either of them as an oven, you don't have a MW. *** You'll have to wait until you're done using it as an oven b/f you can use them as a MW. This point was the deal-breaker when we were planning our appliances. We use our MW a lot, just about all our veggies are cooked in the MW. So, rather than give up counter space, we got one of the Sharp MW Drawers. Others have put their MW in the pantry, others had upper cabinets modified to hold a MW in the bottom, still others built MW alcoves in base cabinets, etc. If counter space is an issue, there are a lot of things you can do to get a MW off the counter. All of the above pertains to our family. It's provided simply to give you things to think about & allow you to make an informed decision, not to try to convince you to get a double oven. As others have said, think about how you cook OR how you would like to cook and base your decision on that. Are there other issues that two ovens would solve? Is it worth it to you to solve those issues? (Maybe not, e.g., maybe you rarely bake or rarely use the oven for more than one item and when you do it's too rare to worry about.) BTW...Going from a 24" to a 30" would not have addressed any of the reasons that we had for getting the double ovens...but YMMV.

Hi Stush and Hibiscus, Thank you both! I have used two microwave containers which fit into each other like a Babushka puppet. The larger one is greased with petroleum jelly at the inside, the smaller one is greased at the outside. I filled the larger one with cement and placed the smaller one inside and kept it positioned with some sticks and weights. I used quite a lot of petroleum jelly to make sure the mould would release. In the end it released easily and - surprisingly enough - the layer of petroleum jelly provided a nice texture on the outside. The bottom and top are finished with some fine 400 grit sandpaper. Sanding in the first 3 days after casting is really, really easy. After this period the cement becomes too hard. The free lime is indeed a concern. The hardening of cement is a chemical reaction so there might also be other unused reaction materials in the finished product. Not sure which materials and doing some research would become project 1001, so I just leave it at that. A simple way to avoid leaching into the root-zone is to isolate and use a plastic inside container, or some household garbage bag. But I'm also experimenting with plasticizers like polyvinyl-alcohol. Not only to reduce leaching of materials, but also to provide some waterproofing for electronics. I have some 15L plastic pots with 2m Sansevierias in my living room which I would like to keep at a steady 30C - 35C at the root-zone. I've selected cheap cement as a casting material for my heating elements. It's just a round cement slab with some electronics in it which is placed at the bottom of the container. But to avoid any hazardous situations - like short-circuits and leaching - the finished cement heater should provide some waterproofing. In the past i've used 'Waterglas' (Na2SiO3, Sodium silicate) to waterproof ceramic pots, but it turned out that waterglas becomes soluble again if it gets in contact with water. Well, my Musa's were not that happy when I accidentally chemically waterproofed their roots. It appears that waterglass only truly hardens when it is applied and chemically reacts with cement and not ceramic. So, plants died - well they abruptly terminated to be honest - but I did learn a thing or two. Now I'm experimenting with polyvinyl-alcohol, or wood glue as an admixture. It just reminds me, the pot I used for waterglas is the same pot I used for my S. Manolin in this thread. If you look closely at the photo in my post from June 25 2017 you can see the accumulation of waterglas salts at the inside edge of the pot. The S. Manolin sits safely in a plastic container again.

I will employ thetips, thank you. I only have the all american sun oven and have it on lazy susan as well. I am happy about your tip to brown bread. I have been spritzing the tops with water as their website advises but that causes condensation on the glass and reduces its efficacy.
