If I don't check in on Tuesday or Wednesday, the doctor slipped . LOL

Hey Michael, Good ole Florida Piney Woods dirt, but I am on the Gulf Coast. We are so much drier than the East Coast. We only get up to about 90 degrees and 90% humidity during watermelon season. My soil is kind of sandy but with a little work you can grow just about anything. When I am away from Florida I miss the summer thunderstorms more than anything else. Nothing less than a 6.0 earthquake shakes the ground like a Florida thunderstorm. The picture of the baby melon was just trying to see if I could post a picture from the instructions. How can you survive winters in zone 5?

Hello everyone and thank you for all your prayers and well wishes. I know that prayer works because Lee is still alive when doctors thought he would not make it past Christmas last year. Well he is still with us and is still cantankerous which lets me know that he is still alive and kicking. He does spend more and more time in bed and tomorrow we will learn what the Doppler of his neck and echo shows so that we know more where we stand. He still has the idea that he will get better though the doctors and I know otherwise. He has been made aware of everything but due to the bleed on his brain before I met him he does not have good short term memory so he forgets. I think it is this belief that keeps him going. Thank you for being dear friends and caring about him. As for me, well diabetic complications have set in with a vengeance along with the strangest rash and itch that anyone could ever have. The itch has been diagnosed as a honest to good allergy to heat. I am on antihistamines and prednisone at the moment (the prednisone is what makes my blood sugar so crazy). The itch has been so bad that I am taking 100 mg of vistaril and sleeping for 30 minutes and being up for an hour before dosing off once again. I spend a lot of the evening hours outside observing, feeling and losing myself in the night. I have developed kidney issues along with the retinopathy and neuropathy. I saw a new endocrinologist yesterday and she is running tons of test to see what else is happening in my body. Prednisone usually causes you to gain weight but I lost 28 pounds in a week and am still losing. The weight lose is good but not in this manner. Missing the amount of work I have this month is also wearing on us as it is my income that keeps us fed and pays a lot of the bills. Oh well, God always provides and I place my trust in him. For those who know a little about my new business adventure I will now give an update and fill you all in on some of the details. The man with whom I entered into the endeavor is not the type of person I wish to do business with so we have split. He is the type who is get it done yesterday and because of that he has made a lot of errors and created some bad first impressions. The up side of all of this is that I have discovered that I can run my own business and my other partner from the first business has joined with me. I am the detail person who does all the marketing research and all the background data that needs to be done before you run gun ho into business. I know what areas are saturated around the Orlando area and where there are areas that need filling. I also am bringing a new item to our business in that I will be combining my writing skills along with photography and desktop publication. I am finalizing our business plan and beginning the process of seeking funding etc. Please pray for our business. If you need a photographer or party planner let us know. We are cheap at the moment. My garden is suffering because I can not go outside at the moment but for very short periods. I have been working a little at night but because there is still evidence that the cobra is still in the area I am not willing to do a lot of work in areas that are not that well lit. I am starting tons of new seeds in preparation for Kates trade and fall gardening. My beefsteak tomato continues to grow and produce the most wonderfully flavored maters. I am saving seeds. I buy woven wire fence, cut it into pieces and form cylinders. Usually, the openings in the woven wire fencing are smaller than my hands, so I cut "portholes" in several places around the cages to reach through and pick tomatos. Most of my cages are from 3' tall fencing, but some are from 4' tall. After I made two cages, I attached them to one another using zip ties, which gave me either a 6' tall tomato cage or 8' tall cage. Most of my cages are 8 to 12 years old and still going strong, so I haven't built any new ones in a while. I use 'leftover' tomato cages as trellises to grow just about anything that climbs too. I also have some two foot tall woven wire cages I use for smaller plants. The cages are staked with 2 to 4 stakes to keep them upright in almost any wind situation. For an average tomato plant, 3 or 4 wooden stakes that are between 3' and 6' tall hold the cage upright in any winds about 50 mph or lower. For some of the big monster plants like Tess' Land Race Currant, Black Cherry, Chocolate Stripes, SunGold, Sweet Million, Brandy Boy, etc., I use 6' to 8' tall green metal fence pots. I attached the cages to the stakes with zip ties. (In the garden, I am the queen of zip ties and use them for everything.) If the tomato plants are having a very good year, I can attach a 3rd cage to the top of the bottom two, but then I have to use a stepladder to pick tomatoes, and because my garden slopes, that means I need someone to hold the ladder. I was just looking at Tess's Land Race Currant while harvesting tomatoes this morning, and it is growing out of the top of its 8' cage. I am toying with the idea of attaching another 4' section to the top of that. It would be hard to pick the topmost tomatoes, but the super-tall plant would give passers-by something to look at! : ) My dad always used 5' or 6' tall cages made of Concrete Reinforcing Wire and his cages were very strong and sturdy and lasted him at least a couple of decades. I use woven wire fencing because it is easier for me to cut with wire cutters, and it is galvanized so it doesn't rust. It also is less expensive. irina_co(z5 CO) "Paul - growing orchids in MI... I bet you had a very specialized growing area! If you can bloom orchids - you can grow AVs with eyes covered and hands tied." Actually, Irina, most of my orchids just grow on windowsills or on a lighted plant stand. Being an apt dweller places major limits on what space can be allotted. Only a very few get pampered by being in a terrarium. Those few are generally micro-minis which would not be able to handle my abysmal winter RH (typically 10-15%) without getting watered 3or4X per day .... which would not happen. The rest -- and I grow an number of different genera -- are able to adapt to my less than stellar conditions. Orchids, by in large, are very tough plants able to handle a lot more neglect, abuse, and poor conditions better than many other plants. In all honesty, I find AVs to be much more fussy and difficult to keep happy.

Good luck kat.It's an easy peasy process,at least it was for me,and with your good attitude it will be for you as well,i'm sure of that.Mine is in the chest area as well,just a little below the neck.They give you a light sedative,kinda like twilight sleep.You don't feel anything ,and when they wake you up there are no SE'S either.

Best thing to have done for chemo,makes life so much easier.I finished chemo last feb,09,and i still have mine in.
Keep us posted on how you're doing.Prayers being said.(((((((((((Kat)))))))))))

Oh yes I had a port in my neck in that major vein,anyway till I got fistula,oh yes much easier,painless,No pain getting it put in,I was awake the whole time not bad.gl,Ill think about you tomorrow
