I would use a collection of some kind, something with a little dimension and not square. Maybe African/Asian/Mexican masks, decorative plates, wrought iron gates? Leave a lot of space between the items to keep it from looking cluttered.

This may not be your style, but the first thing I thought of when I saw the photos was either:

An old wooden ladder done in a dark wood stain, hung horizontial or a wonderful old scrolly iron gate, painted black.....

It's a very nice room - great built-ins and colors. Try not to let the height of the wall dictate completely how you decorate it. You'll end up dwarfing the nice cabinet that you have.

Another idea, to lighten and "land" the wall, might be a collection of six or eight prints of similar subjects, simply and identically framed, and hung in a tight group (three over three or four over four). Botanicals, or birds, or shells, or old maps, or coral...here's a sample of the idea:
You can find groups of prints inexpensively, and put them in stock frames from the craft stores, if you like the idea.

I think the cabinet needs a little more height no matter what you put above it. Could you try a medium sized somewhat shapely lamp on it (like a ginger jar shape), probably on the right side? The chair next to it would make a lamp a natural. Then add the kind of collection bronwynsmom is talking about on the left side? You may have to recenter the cabinet to get this to work.

I absolutely love everything about your room -- the bookcases, fireplace, trim, and the color of your walls too.

I don't have a suggestion, as I have 19' ceiling in my LR as well and have never known what to do with them either. But I wanted to say that your LR is Beautiful!!

Yes, I'd LOVE LOVE LOVE to put a lamp inbetween the sofa and loveseat but how because the cord will be visible for a couple of feet?

Paint the cord the color of the carpet, put your mind to not noticing it, and it will go away. Some decorators cut the carpet and run it underneath.

On your wall that you are asking about, I would get a large tapestry - no collections of smaller things. Let the tapestry hang starting at a height that is somewhere between the door frame and the top height of the bookcase, and hang down behind the chair and cabinet a bit.

I think this one might be very nice in there (tho I am not sure about the height being sufficient, you would have to measure):

I would take all the pix off the top of the cabinet, and add a great lamp with some visual weight and perhaps a black shade.

Move the tree from out of hiding between the couch and loveseat, and put that in the corner behind the chair. Put a another nice weighty lamp on the end table.

Add a patterned colorful pillow to the chair - perhaps take one of the floral print pillows from the loveseat and use that. Keep the two striped and the other floral pillow on the loveseat, and find a new home for the lumbar pillow that is now in the center.

Looking around, I think you have a LOT of little things everywhere. The photo wall collection, all the various little things on the shelves. I would like to see you get rid of a few of the little things on the shelves, and add some more groupings of books.

I would also get rid of the mirror over the fireplace, as it is another kind of colorless, angular piece, and instead look for a large painting with some color to warm up that wall a bit. Instead of hanging it, I would lean it on the mantel, to connect the mantel to the items above it. Right now the mirror and the two sconces feel as if they are floating a bit.

les917 - So do you think I have too many pillows on my sofa? About the book, unfortnately I don't have any more, which is why I have the other items on the shelf. I wish I did. Love the tapestry you picked out. I think it may just work. I definitely do not want a cluttered look and I appreciate all advice/opinions very much.
