totally off topic

I'm lost. I can't find my way around this board. I try to use the search feature but no matter what I type in about decorating, it shows me posts in the garden forums.

Why wont this board send me emails when I post in a thread, or create my own topic? Does it hate me or is this normal? I clicked the option for 'allow emails from members'.. I think that's what I was supposed to do

If someone could help me I'd really appreciate it. I like this place, and I like the people here..

search was the worst part of using this site for me, too. But if you go to the bottom of the page, when you have no thread opened, and use the search function there, click on the "search this forum" only instead of "entire site", you have a better chance of finding what you want. If you use the search at the top of the page...well, it's useless as far as I can tell.

At the bottom of the page after your message and next to where you check to receive emails it tells you Please note that you must enable this feature on your Preferences page by checking off 'Allow other users to send you email'. So, go to your Preferenes and make sure you've set the correct allowance. Good luck!

No, it's in a big pot on wheels. I leave it outside unless temps dip below 20. I have found that leaf damage begins at that temp. No doubt it would survive at much lower temps, but it would defoliate. It basically stays indoors during some of December, most of January and some of February because it is too much of a chore to bring it in and out every day. The rest of the time is easier to manage as only a handful of very cold days are expected. x

Today, its very hard to ignore all the violence that goes on everywhere. I still feel that poor parenting is the main issue. If the parents were allowed to punish their kids like we were punished growing up (in the 50's- and 60's), I think less of these gangs would be doing what they seem to want to do. Even in elementry school the teachers would use the a wooden board rule (paddle) on the the kids behind, or water soaked rattans, if the kids were unruley. I saw both being used, and in those days the kids were not as aggressive and wild. Its peer pressure that gangs enjoy and also some means of sick pleasure that the kids seem to have when carring a gun. I blame a lot of it on drugs, and the ability and ease of getting guns. After President Kennedy was assasinated, there were major plans to stop the sale of hand guns to many people, but that all went away in just a very few years. We do need stricter gun laws, curfews for the kids, and more legal activites that they can get into, besides gangs and trouble. Every day, people are killed by a mindless gun toting nut, and they can be only 11 or 12 years old and carry lethal weapons!

Thank you so much for letting us know, Patricia. I love the talented Mr. Peacock! :o) I might be mistaken, but I believe Ms. Edna was in her 70s when they met, bumblebeez. I've read in interviews that she was a much beloved mentor & friend. He's said that he found comfort in caring for her in her later age. She passed away a couple of years ago at the age of 89.

Hi David! The member has to have messaging turned on to receive a private message. Some do, some don't. To find out, click on the person's name in a post they have either started or commented on, which opens their member page. At the top right of that page, if they have messaging turned on (as you do), you should see a "Message" tab to the right of their name. If you don't see that tab, they don't have messaging turned on. Then, you're left with asking in a post if anyone knows how to reach them or start a post with their screen name in the subject in hopes of drawing their attention to it. Good luck!

If you really want to search the garden web home site, don't bother to use its search feature. Use Google's advanced search and in the box "Search within a site or domain:" enter ths.gardenweb.com.

Javachik, I have that option 'allowing emails from members' clicked on my Preferences page. Is that it?
Am I supposed to see an option for getting emails of replies on the page that I'm replying on? I hope that made sense..

This website is a bit antiquated if you ask me. I know what you mean about getting a general email from the website when there are replies to a topic you've posted or responded to. Other forums I've been on do that, but I don't think that happens here unless I've missed something. You also can't go back and edit or delete your post after you've hit submit. And I have no idea why the search at the bottom of the page works better than the search at the top and you usually find that out only when someone questions about it.

I posted in the Paint forum the other day and an option box came up asking me if I wanted to receive replies when anyone posted in that thread.
But since I never got that option box in this forum, I thought maybe I was doing something wrong.

Glad to it's not just me, but it would be nice if they offered that option here too.

Does anyone receive an email when they respond or post a new topic in this thread?
I clicked the 'receive emails from members' option on my Preferences page, but I'm still not getting any.

I have never started a thread here, but on the garden forums, when I post something, there is a box one can check next to your text box that will send responses to your post to your email account. When I post something, I often forget to check back if I am busy at school and it is so convenient to get an email alert that includes the text of the response. I don't end up ignoring anyone that way.

There are some basic features that have been around for ten years but they are not here! This is the only forum I know of that does not send email notices when someone adds to a thread you have posted to.

Nor have I ever seen a site that does not distinguish between threads with new posts (since your last visit) and threads you are already up to date on.

The above features are so basic, I don't understand why we don't have them.

Laurie the option you checked for email, means that if another person here wanted to send you a private email, she can do so through the site. I don't think there is any way to get email notification of activity in a given thread. :(

lauriedeee - Yes I receive email notices when someone posts a comment on a topic I originated. Before you create your post, click on highlighted "Preferences" in the instruction line I pointed you to (bottom of page, 2nd sentence next to the email replies check box). In Preferences select Edit Your Personal Information, Page, and Preferences. On that page scroll down to where you can check Allow other users to send you email via forms at our site. Make sure to save your changes. Also, if you're trying to get your replies via your phone, make sure the email on your Preferences page matches the email your phone is set to receive. HTH!

lauriedeee -I just re-read your last question. No, you do not get email messages when you or others reply to other people's posts only when it's your original post.

I emailed one of the people behind the scenes at GW..and she said they are going to update the board in the near future. :)
