To match, or not to match?!?!

HI all,

DH and I are currently building a home and it's time for me to select the light fixtures. My question is two fold:

-Do the lighting fixtures all need to match? (all brushed nickel, or all oil rubbed bronze)

-Should the light fixtures match the hardware? (our hardware on our cabinets and doors are brushed nickel and the faucets are also brushed nickel)

I know ultimately it comes down to preference, I just wondered what everyone else has in their home.

There has been much discussion on this. I think it was over on the decorating forum too.

I think it's just preference. In our current build, most of the the downstairs is SS or nickel. Master bath is chrome(just because I liked my chosen fixtures better in chrome) Upstairs, the kids wanted ORB so that's what they have in their rooms and baths. All interior door hardware is SS regardless of place. Outdoor light fixtures are ORB. All exterior door hardware is ORB except front doors. Those are black because of the iron scrolls on the doors.

Kitchen app are SS. Cab hardware is SN. Some people have mixed hardware finishes as well within one kitchen.

All in all...I think pick what you like.

What finish is the lighting in your bathrooms? If it's bronze, then go with bronze knobs. If it's chrome or stainless, use bronze throughout the rest of the house, but chrome/stainless inside the bathrooms. In other words, the outside of the bathroom door will be bronze, but the inside stainless.

Since you so have to do something to the deteriorating stucco, I would use the vertical siding on the top, like they have. You have a trim piece towards the bottom of the upper part, and they apparently have removed theirs. I would leave the trim piece, it is part of the character of the house and was a mistake to remove on their side. I would leave the cedar shakes, either clean them, and seal them, or clean and give a light coat of stain. I cant quite make out what the wood is along the very bottom, but, it is different than the rest of the house. I would like to see the cedar shakes there too. Please do not paint the brick. Let your house keep its character.

Go find out what's the best paint/stain for redwood. I do know that redwood bleeds through regular opaque stains. Cabot opaque stains can be tinted to Ben Moore colors but if you want to leave it natural, you'll probably want a clear coat of some kind. Do not trust any information you get about these stains from Lowe's or Home Depot, even though they sell it, the person helping you isn't always familiar with the product. Find yourself a stand- alone paint store that sells decking and siding stain. PS. Thompson's Weather Shield isn't the right product for this.

I would remove the two smaller pendants and replace with recessed lights and keep the 3 over the island and the one over the table.
