Kitchen lighting problem

The ceiling in our kitchen is dropped about 10", with the dreaded florescent-behind-crackle-glass recessed into the middle. The recess is about 4 X 6 feet, and screams "1980"! I am refacing the kitchen cabs and counters, and want to eliminate this fixture without major structural changes, such as raising the ceiling back to its original 8 feet. I'm thinking about removing the grid and putting two lighting tracks in the recess, with floodlights, plus some small under cabinet task lighting. It is a small work kitchen, with no direct windows. Any ideas?
