Found the perfect microwave to fit 'the hole'

After my little old microwave of 22 years pooped out the other day, I could stand it no longer and set out today to shop for one, determined to not come home until I found one that would fit the little shelf hole where the other one fit just perfectly.

I just happened to think about the Sears appliance store, when I stopped at the bread store right next to it. I found one I thought would be perfect, but wanted to check a little more rather than buying the first one. It was just 800 watts, and I was kind of hoping to find a more powerful one if possible with small dimensions. WM and Lowes didn't have anything any better and I ended up with the Kenmore and it was just $55. Woohoo!

It has 9 quick touch buttons and auto and express defrost.

My old Kenmore cost more than double that, without any of those nifty features.

I still need to drill out the hole in the shelf a little bit to accommodate the bigger plug b4 I can put it on the shelf, but tomorrow I will be back in business. I'm thinking of celebrating tomorrow by making some quick rocky road fudge with black walnuts.

Isn't it amazing how much we depend on a microwave? I can't think of any major thing that we actually cook in a MW, but we were lost when ours gave out (after 17 years). It was very quickly replaced with one that has really spiffy features, too. :-)

Glad you found a new microwave and for a good price too. I would be lost without my microwave.

My friend's microwave that was over 22 years old finally quit working just before Christmas. I used to tease her about and tell her when she stood in front of the old thing while on the telephone it was going to cook her insides. LOL Glad it finally broke down. LOL Her teenaged daughter bought her a new microwave for Christmas.

My family's first microwave was a big old Kenmore, it was huge. LOL That was almost 28 years ago!

I'd been hoping this silliness would've disappeared by now. Ho hum. Anyways, Spire--what I think Steve was trying to convey in his second post is that people differ in how they communicate, and part of using online forums effectively is accepting that fact. I think the impression that he was being condescending is mostly a result of American anti-intellectual prejudices rather than a result of his being an ass. I'll certainly admit, though, that the latter is possible. :) In any case, Steve gave good advice and I think it's much more profitable to accept that advice for what it is than to sit around worrying about whether or not his way of expressing himself happens to fit your preconceived notions of how people ought to talk. Regarding "perfect ferns"... well, I can't give too much advice since I don't have any experience with the climate. I wonder, though, if a couple of my favorite ferns from the east would do well there. Diplazium pycnocarpon (aka Athyrium pycnocarpon; I don't recall the full common name offhand, but it's got "glade fern" in it) would probably give the intended effect, if it grows there. Or if you were looking at lady ferns (Athyrium proper) the US native Athyrium filix-femina is, for my tastes, a much more enjoyable plant than the Japanese painted fern (Athyrium niponicum). We had your dilemma. Consider that you do not have to have counters above or below your microwave. Have one bank of cabinets that go floor to ceiling. This bank of cabinets should be the depth you need for your microwave. Have drawers from the floor up to just below your microwave. I would put the oven itself at or slightly above counter height. (For me, an OTR is too high.) You can either surround your microwave with a trim kit, or have an open shelf for it. Either method, the area housing your microwave needs to allow enough room around and behind it for air flow. There are specs in your microwave manual or your trim kit instructions. Cabinet details: If you include some deeper drawers, you can put the containers you might actually use in the microwave. Above the microwave, you can have a cabinet. This could be a regular cabinet or one with tray dividers. Be sure to have at least a small counter nearby as a "landing space" to set hot dishes coming out of your microwave.

I'm confused, do you think the stink lingers because it's built in or do you think it would have happened with any microwave, but you'd just get rid of it if it was a cheapo on the counter? I've only had ones that sat on the counter and ones that were built in over the range with the fan for the range. Hated the location of both because I don't like appliances on the counter and want a hood rather than over range micro. However I never noticed one being more stinky that the other and we use ours a lot, almost daily for heating water, steaming veggies and reheating. I've made popcorn and it lingers and bacon which is even worse (banned hubby from that), but it eventually wet away without any major clean up. I've scorched popcorn, but never torched anything so I'm just trying to figure out is the problem due to the degree of torching or the style of micro? I planned to find a spot for a built in in my remodel, but if it's something about the style that makes the stink linger I wouldn't want that. Please enlighten me! Thanks.

Ken, I guess you didn't catch my previous post, with detailed pics of how I assemble my plant I.D. tags. Here are pics: The 1 1/2" single-sided round tag with the loop on it which is exterior to the main circle. You then personalize it by filling out a couple of lines and clicking OK. Example: Hosta Dinky Donna I get them at www.pettags4less.com. There was a recent sale at www.drs.fostersmith.com, with the aluminum pet tags like this selling for 99 cents each, which I posted, but I don't know if that sale is over. The first place sells them for $2.29. The 9" aluminum tent stake. I like this brand, as the coppery color looks nice in the garden and harmonizes with the mulch and soil a whole lot better than the red, purple, blue, etc. ones I've seen. This is the Coghlan 9" ultra lite tent stake of anodized aluminum. It won't rust and there is no paint to flake off, so it stays this color. I remove the pull-string and utilize the hole it was threaded through. The brass 1/8" diameter screw posts. I found that the 5/16" length was perfect to fasten the plant I.D. tag to the tent stake. The one in this picture is a tad longer than 5/16", but it gives you the idea. The threaded part screws into the tubular part, which has an internal threading. Neat, out of the weather, doesn't rust. They also sell screw posts in stainless steel, aluminum, and plastic, but not all come in the 1/8" diameter, which is a new product. The assembled finished product:

Oh my gosh - are you my mother?? She has a large built out microwave "nook" and we had to find the perfect size - yes hers is from Sears too.

Yes, and I was particularly happy it was a Kenmore and from that particular Sears Store. I noticed a sign on the door where the the store was for sale and found out it was the one woman working there yesterday who had it for sale. I fear those little privately owned stores may someday be run out of business by all the big box stores.

She has a large built out microwave "nook" and we had to find the perfect size - yes hers is from Sears too.

lol...but my situation is that my cubby is so small I feared not being able to find one at all that would go in there. I still haven't installed it in the shelf yet, but think and hope there will be about 1/8 to 1/4 of a inch clearance at the top if I measured accurately.

hmmmm...I just tried it out (it is just sitting on the box) and it took a lot less time. 1 min 40 sec when I used the one button method for 'beverage' as opposed to 3 min 30 sec when I keyed in the amount of time on my old one. They are both 800 watts, so I guess this new one is a great power improvement over the old 22 year old one.

Maybe I'll try a baked potato for breakfast just to see how well that does with the one button method. I'm so pleased to say the least.
