Busy Kitchen Day (With Upcoming Pictures)

Hi everyone,

Today is a busy day in the kitchen, but they are extremely easy recipes so it's gonna be fun :-). Today, mom and I are making the Cuppa Cuppa Cuppa Peach Cobbler and we're also having my favorite dish: fried green tomatoes (with Vidalia Onion Dressing) for supper! Pictures to come!

Linda C, I am so excited! The cake/cobbler's in the oven and the tomatoes have been sliced (you can let them set for 6 hours to draw the water out) and the dressing is made and chilling.

Hi Japie, thanks for the extra extra onfo on your kautskyi. That picture from across the road says it all. I'll keep mine just where it is (similar exposure but without the stunning backdrop) and hope it ends up the same! Julia, I have never had anyone not want home grown tomatoes. Jean, sorry about your cucumber plants. I know that heat you had there was brutal. I wish I could share some cucumbers with my forum friends as I am going to have lots of them. In fact I picked yesterday and there are ones I will pick today. Nat, I couldn't work in the garden either for those few days we had that were hot and it was no where near as hot as most of you had it. But back to work now as temps are much better. Nancy, I wouldn't have to do any of this moving or re-arranging if it wasn't for the fact that I have gotten the veggie crazies. So had to do something. But my soil is never rock hard like yours summertime or any other time. I doubt I would be able to do this yearly summer moving of plants if that were so. As you might know I am really back into the veggioes like crazy this year after years of the cut back plans die to changing the mid back yard (used to be veggies) into daylilies and some iris. But gosh those daylily beds look STUNNING up there! The Terrace Garden moving was simply because I decided I wanted to move MAN OF SORROWS up front to the first terrace. And I had tried to cut back the Matrona Sedum but it has gotten too big. I figgured I would just fix it all now to be the way I wanted. The Sedum moved compleatly out of there to a new spot in another garden and some daylilies got shuffled around.

Flooring suggestions for a small but busy kitchen

Your cabinetry is beautiful!! What a pleasure that must be! And I think nixing the carpet was very prudent. For the flooring you should first make some practical decisions -- if you want a floor with some "give" or if your joints can take standing and walking on a very hard floor. If the latter, then you could use ceramic or stone tiles, which areAn hard and unforgiving but beautiful.... If the former, then you would be more limited -- real wood or any number of vinyl products, include the planks. Another practical decision sounds like whether you intend to keep the ceramic tiles around the edge of the space that you mention, but we can't see in the photos. Seems like if you do want to retain them, then you would have to do ceramic (or stone?) in the center, tho maybe a flooring contractor could advise you about what you could insert there. My guess is that he'd tell you it would cost less to tear them out than to spend alot of time working around them trying to fudge something new to work with something old. But maybe they are very beautiful and worth keeping. The other practical decision is if you intend to DIY or hire a contractor to do the floor. With just these two photos to go on, and your inclination for less business in the overall kitchen picture, it would be tempting to use a homogenous floor across the entire space that picks up the color of the countertop . Personally, I would not use a fake wood plank floor next to nice wood cabinets like yours. If vinyl planks seem to be the best option, I would go with one that imitates ceramic tile or stone.

Sounds good Brad. I've never had fried green tomatoes and I'm even from the south, shame,shame! Please do tell how you make them. Do they taste like fried eggplant?

I have never eaten fried eggplant, so I wouldn't know how they would taste LOL. They have a sour taste, not like a fully ripe tomato. They are very easy to make. Besides the tomatoes, it's flour and/or cornmeal (bread crumbs work too), milk and/or egg and oil to fry them in. Slice them about 1/4 inch thick, salt both sides of tomato slices, dip into beaten egg/milk mixture, then into breading. Fry in hot oil until golden brown. So yummy. They also make Fried Green Tomato batter (which I think is much better).

Here are the finished tomatoes. They were pretty good. I'll try and get a picture of the cobbler tomorrow.

Yum, Brad, I love fried green tomatoes, and haven't had any this year yet. We always had them for breakfast.

The cobbler is very good! I had a piece not too long after it came out of the oven. Yum :). Here are the recipes for you, trixietx,

Vidalia Onion Dressing

1 cup onions, diced
2 T. rice (or red) wine vinegar
1/2 cup mayo
2 T. brown sugar

Mix all ingredients and let chill. Serve over fried green tomatoes or use as a dressing for cole slaw.

Cuppa Cuppa Cuppa Cake (or Cobbler) Courtesy of Teresa :)

1 cup self-rising flour
1 cup sugar
1 cup milk
2 cans sliced peaches in heavy syrup (15-16 ounces each)
1 stick real butter

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Place butter in Pyrex baking dish (or similar). Place into oven while it preheats and take out once melted. In the meantime, whisk the flour, sugar and milk together til mostly smooth. Pour over the butter in the baking dish. Spoon the contents of both cans of peaches over the batter. Bake at 350, until golden brown and crust is done (50-60 minutes, depending on your oven). Serve hot with a scoop of ice cream for a wonderful treat!

I ate my piece of cobbler with some Cool Whip and it was heavenly. :) Enjoy!
