Market Day, July 16

Today was another cool, cloudy day at our little farmers' market in Gibsonville. I had a pretty good morning: by 10Am I had sold all but 2 mini loaves of lemon bread and 1 mini loaf of apple spice, so I packed up and called it a day.

Yesterday I sold 2 large loaves and 4 mini loaves at work that were intended to go to the market. My caterer friend bought the mini loaves for her brunch she is catering tomorrow. I told her I could provide her with sweet fruit and nut breads anytime with just a couple of days notice.

The Milk & Honey bread is being well received! Just wish I could find the time to make a double batch. That and my 100% whole wheat both sold out today.

Driving home today I saw where a BJ's is going up! I got really excited as we do not have a Costco or Sam's here in our little town. I'll be checking out the BJ's web site to see what they have and asking on here for any recommendations.

We now have a local farmer bringing a vegetable truck to our office for 2 hours once a week. This past Thursday they had a great selection of vegetables and seasonal fruit. I got local squash and SC peaches.

And I have now saved half of the approximate cost of a hammered dulcimer! That's one of the reasons I make the bread late at night to sell at the market.

Well done Teresa.

I always know it was a good day at the market when you are home and posting and it just after 8:30 here on the west coast.

What time does your market open? The one here in Duncan doesn't even open until 9:00 AM.

Wonderful, Teresa. How pleased you must be and how lucky your customers are!

Don't you just love those SC peaches. We had some spooned over hot buttered biscuits for breakfast yesterday.

Would you mind sharing your Milk and Honey bread recipe?

Sounds like you are really going to be getting a hammered dulcimer before the summer is over. Good for you!

If it wasn't watered 3x a day in the absence of rain and also covered with a thin layer of compost or dirt, then it's nothing more than bird food. The fact that I can see so much seed in the picture indicates that the seed was not worked into the dirt. It can't just be sprinkled on top of dirt, you need to use the back of a rake to mix it in, no solid contact with dirt = no grow. New grass seed doesn't need any fertilizer, in fact that will stress new grass seedling and more likely just feed the weeds. Would have been much more effective if you had done the dethatching in the fall and seeded then. Spring is not a great time to seed. Only thing you can do now is Sod or try mixing that seed in better and getting on a consistent watering schedule for the next few weeks.

Yes, I think after two previous seasons that I do have a following of half a dozen or more regular customers. But, of course, many of them do not come to the market every Saturday. I want to try to bake more to take each market day, but time is a big factor. I want the bread to be as fresh as it can be, but I only have two nights after work to bake. Tea loaves could be made on Wed. night and kept refrigerated as they improve with the keeping. I don't like to freeze anything that I plan to sell - that's just me. If any of you have suggestions, I am open. Just please keep in mind that I work full 8 hour days, 5 days a week. I hope to make lemon bread and cinnamon rolls for next Saturday's market in addition to the regular loaves that I make. Thanks! Teresa

Ann, the vendors set up around 7AM and there are some customers there even then. The official hours are 8-4 each Saturday from May 1 to November 1. I usually get there by 7:30 so I can get a spot near the large vegetable vendors and close to my friends.

Teresa, I'm glad to hear it is going so well for you.
When I was at the farmer's market that is close to me, I noticed that the gal who has been doing it for several years always has a basket of individually plastic wrapped cinnamon rolls. She sells them for $1.50 each. They seem to sell well to customers and other vendors... I can tell she gives them plenty of room on a cookie sheet, to spread out and over proofs them a little for larger size.

Teresa, you have done very well at your market! I wish there was a baker at mine, but no such luck! Have to do it myself. The SC peaches are wonderful now--big and juicy! I buy a bag of them every weekend!

Yay Teresa! I'm glad you had another excellent market day. And I'll bet your caterer friend will pre-order in the future. How cool that you have a mini veggie farmers market come to you on a truck.

You are so lucky to have such a great market.

I drove by the one here in our town yesterday, would have stopped but there were only two booths set up! How pathetic is that?

Of course up here, it is just the beginning of the vegetable season, it will get bigger over the next few weeks as the crops reach harvest stage....

Can't wait until you post that you got your new dulcimer!
