Door glass insert options - frosted, etched , white

Hi,

My plan is to use glass inserts for my wall kitchen cabinet doors. At first I thought I'm going with frosted (etched - is this the same) glass. It turns out that I still can see a lot whats inside the cabinet. I don't know if there are different grades of frosted... So far I found pretty much the same in glass stores.

I was also looking for a double effect. E.g. some pattern on the front and frosted in the back - no luck so far.

Plan #2 was to use white glass. I found stained white glass. Unfortunately, it has some imperfections (character). I found laminated glass (where there is a laminate inside the glass). This would look nice. However, it is very pricey. I'm also looking into options like painting glass,...

The other day I was at Ikea and found an interesting solution. They have the Bravad kitchen line with doors that seem to be made with regular glass and an attached white baker (on the inside). Has anyone see something like this before? What kind of baker (foil) are they using?

We are considering installing an a 15-lite (15 glass panels) interior door in our kitchen for the pantry. We are going for an Asian look so will be covering each small glass pane with a film that looks like rice paper. I found the film at Home Depot (ArtScape) and Lowes (Gila). Have no idea which brand is better. If we ever decide to go with another look, the film can be removed and replaced.

While looking for interior doors we came across Feather River Doors. They have an incredible catalogue. Here is one page of the catalogue showing how obscure each glass type is. In our kitchen cabinets we decided to go with Reeded on a horizontal instead of a vertical.

It also matters if you want tempered glass or not. I have three little kids, so I wanted tempered. Unfortunately most of the fancier glass types were not conducive to tempering (I have no idea why). For me it was between regular glass and a seedy/swirled glass (for some reason regular seedy couldn't be tempered but the seedy/swirled COULD - ???), and I went with regular glass. I have three glass cabs with glasses and plates that I like, so I wanted to be able to see them, so this is fine for me. Just wanted to throw the tempered thing out there... :)

I thought this was an interesting question. IÂll post some thoughts in the hopes it will spark comments from others. I found one thread that mentions frosted glass being used in a conservatory: Opinions on Frosted Glass? Frosted glass does diffuse the light, and diffused light is beneficial. In spite of that, I couldnÂt find much information on the Internet regarding the use of frosted or etched glass in greenhouses. So, my guess (just a guess) is that frosted or etched glass is not widely discussed as an option for glass greenhouses because it doesnÂt negate the need for shadecloth or whitewash in sunny situations. If it provided a definite advantage over clear glass, it seems like it would be easier to find more references to its use. I donÂt see why it would be too opaque. Maybe itÂs not discussed much because the people who choose glass greenhouses also enjoy seeing in or out; if they didnÂt care about that, they might as well choose polycarbonate. That being said, I think you have a good reason to work with this idea. If it helps you transform recycled windows into something that pleases you when you look up at themÂinstead of being annoyed by streaksÂthen why not? The only downside I can see is you might find you still have to do something additional to diffuse the sun coming into your structure. (I wish I had the experience to wager a guess about that, but I sure donÂt.) IÂd be tempted to try one window (or a scrap piece of glass) to see if I liked the results. Now, if itÂs a double paned window, and you frosted both pieces of glassÂwould that diffuse the light even more? I donÂt know... Maybe someone that knows more about light diffusion than I do will pipe in here.

I absolutely love the look of glass/frosted glass in the pocket door. Did think for a minute of doing it in my Master Bath. But I love my blackout drapes, and sleeping in total darkness, so wouldn't appreciate the early morning light...(and now that I think about it, that's probably the reason I haven't been sleeping through the night since the bathroom wall has been torn down...duh!) We just ordered ours with mirror on BOTH sides, one for dressing and altering (Seem to have to hem a LOT of pants) and one for checking things in private...shhh. My sister also commented that it might be better to balance the weight having mirror on both sides. DH made the frame himself as he was not impressed with the quality of ready made ones. Curious as to why it would cost you $620 more though. Really $310 for glass for each door? Anyhow, my recommendation is to save the money and stick with the solid doors.

pcjs--can you elaborate a little more on what you used to insert the glass with? I've been searching the forum for options. We got 4 of our doors prepped for glass & got some great seeded glass at a local place for pretty cheap. But my cherry cabinets are so nice I don't want to use the KitchenMaid installation kit on them--the screws are really long and it's scary. My bathroom vanity has these great silicon half-tube/moldings that keep the glass in and are easy to take in and out (we broke one panel and have inserted radiator screens instead). I can't find them anywhere. The glass guys act like they've never heard of such a thing and suggested that we just use removable silicon caulking.

For those of you that used the film, can you see who is at the door? My house seems like grand central station of late, and we took the pinched old fashioned curtains off about a year ago. I have actual curtain panels there now that we close up at night and open during the day. That way we have the privacy at night and during the day we can see who is at the door from the family room without going to the door (which is kind of a pain with child gates). If it is just the mailman, UPS., Fed Ex, etc. then we don't get the door.

I think I may do one of the following:
(1) make stained glass panels (out of white/clear/seedy type glass, not colored); or
go to the local (recycled/used materials) home resource place and see if I can't find an old window or two with that vintage looking wavy glass. I could cut it out and use it for the glass in my cabinets.
Just a couple ideas!

You could also do stained and leaded glass and get a fabulous design feature in addition to the more obscure character. Middlefield Glass makes some incredible door inserts and I was thrilled with both the quality and prices. They've got a fabulous website, but it takes a long time to load...

One basic thing to consider - If you're really that concerned with hiding the contents, glass just may not be the right material. I mean, you're simply working against the nature of the material...

What we did was to essentially divide my stuff into 'pretty' and 'ugly' -- and the 'pretty' stuff is stored neatly in the glass-front cabinet. The 'ugly' stuff is stored in the adjacent solid-door cabinet.
