Save laundry to wash with new machine, or wash before it arrives?

Say you've got laundry piling up, which will reach critical mass around the time your new washer (LG front-loader) is scheduled to arrive. Until then you've still got your old top-loader, which works with cold water only. What would you do: Play it safe by doing the laundry before the new washer arrives, or save it all for the new machine so you can put it through its paces right away, at the risk of being in a crunch if there's a problem?

Given the endless horror stories I've read about LG parts and repair I think the answer is obvious.

I now do laundry on a schedule... certain loads on ceratin days... unless we end up with so much of something to need an unscheduled run, for example.. did we use way more pool towels than normal today or we were all doing yard work and took extra showers and changes of clothes... you get the idea...

Me, I'd keep on schedule.. why have laundry pile up???

I had a "musty smell" with our FL Whirlpool Duet (came with the home, 6 years old now) and I did a little reading to figure out a fix. - I cleaned out the filter trap. Not really dirty. - Ran a load with white vinegar, hot water. Still a bit musty so then ran a load with Borax powder soap. Smell gone for last 6 months. - I always leave the door open and don't use cold water wash. - I see WP pushing a "special cleaning" soap for the FL machines. A bit expensive and waste of money compared to just running vinegar or Borax soap. - I was using liquid soap (cheaper) and not the special "HE" soap. I did catch Tide HE powder on sale at Target and tried it. Wife likes Tide better than the cheap soap I was buying so when she is around I use that. When she is gone I use H&A liquid. Always on sale at WM. I don't notice any cleaning difference and finally got my wife to admit she just likes the smell of Tide. Tide recently went to a new formula for their powder soaps which are suppose to be "better" and require less soap. Have not tried them yet. The cost is higher too. An article in the NYTimes a few months ago talked about how Americans have a tendency to use too much soap when washing clothes. I've played around with the amounts to use, brands, etc... Also, the WSJ had an article talking how 15 years ago all the top loading washers did a great job and the FL (at that time) failed. Now the majority of the washers are FL with few TL available. The FL sell themselves as "saving water/electricity" as the most important feature. I looked at the new washers at Sears and like one new TL machine that sells itself as the same efficiency as the FL. I would like a new machine (when this one breaks) that is about 4.3 cu, our current model is 4.0.

@georgect No, the manufacturers don't get kickbacks. The only thing they get to do is put a little energy star logo on the box and marketing labels and literature hoping it prods consumers to buy their machine (at a higher price) for perceived payback in energy savings. There are occasional rebates, sometimes offered by the government or local utilities paid directly to the consumer for energy efficient appliance purchases, but those rebates don't go to the manufacturers. That said, how many of you have to flush the toilet TWICE to swallow up what normally went down the drain with one flush? My non-government issued plunger gets way more work with the modern HE toilet than those 80s and 90s style toilets. But I will concede some foresight is needed to deal with dwindling water supplies out West to speed consumer choices. Free market metrics would say that consumers would pay more willingly to save money from water, sewer, and energy costs. Regulate/price the resource (water/sewer/energy) right and you probably would not have to regulate the downstream user (appliance) of said resource, free market economy would drive the correct choices on its own, but possibly not at the speed/rate of the government interests. Cars/trucks somewhat work that way. CAFE standards slowed big SUV sales possibly, but it was the price of the resource (gas) that made big consumer movements out of Large SUVs rapidly. I think there's some confusion here... If a washer has dumbed-down temps, a heater won't make those temperatures any higher. What a heater may do, is offer the option of a sanitary or extra-hot temperature, great for cleaning but not safe for all items. And it may help by heating the water if the machine wants to do a hot wash, but fills with cool water because of a long hot water lag (long pipe run between domestic water heater and washing machine). Another thing: In most cases, dumbed-down temperatures are not forced on the manufacturers. They choose them in order to qualify for direct-to-manufacturer tax credits, as much as $250/unit. You could say that the manufacturers are selling out their customers to get the tax credits. The exception is traditional deep-fill agitator top-loaders. They use so much water that they may actually bump up against the mandatory Federal regulations. Even there, it's interesting to realize that, prior to 2011, there were no mandatory restrictions on water usage. There were energy restrictions, which may have mandated cooler wash temperatures on deep-fill machines (because all that water takes a lot of energy to heat). But there were no restrictions on unheated water, therefore no limits on how much rinse water could be used.

Yes the LG turns both ways in wash and in rinse cycles. So it sounds like CR's June 2007 report was concerning TLs only. Is that correct? I did not read this report but I'm confused about some statements. TLs still have a hot wash. Isn't the temperature of the hot wash dependent upon your water temperature of your hot water? I know some FLs have a built in water heater so that would get and keep the temperature even hotter. How is the water temperature of the water helping machines meet energy standards when most did not have a built in water heater? Which brands and models did CR identify as reducing water temperature to meet standards? As far as water levels, TLs didn't reduce their water levels. Is CRs trying to say TLs use less water now? TLs rely on huge amounts of water. They won't clean well if you reduce the water levels. Can't you still control the water levels in TLs? True FLs for the house don't use the amount of water that we see in a laundromat. Did they ever? Have the water levels been reduced in 2007 for residential FLs? Many FLs sold in 2007 were being sold prior to Jan 07 like the one I purchased. Are people saying new models coming out for the first time after Jan 07 will have even less water or that the ones before Jan and sold afterwards had the reduction? Normally CR cites discontinued model numbers. How current were these model numbers? How do you test a wash using the energy savings cycle? What cycle is that? When I checked out the energy star info, it said that FLs automatically would achieve a better rating on water because they use at least half the amount of water compared to any TL. I never heard they were reducing water levels in FL. It also said due to the better water extraction of FLs they would rate higher than any TL as FLs require less drying time which really eats up watts. Some FLs like Maytag uses about the same amount of watts as TLs. The typical TL uses in the 400 range of watts so did the Maytag FL I checked. LG used 167 watts. Both units claimed energy star but you can see energy star rating can be achieved without lowering watts.

I think I'd save it all for the new machine! You want to give it a super work out and see how it compares, right?

With the large capacity it should take less time too!

I knew for about a month when my new set were arriving, but can't afford to let most laundry pile up at risk of things getting sour, or stains setting in. So I did all the regular laundry ahead of time, but left things that didn't matter, such as extra sheets/towels that weren't at risk of getting sour/stained. This way I got to do a few loads right away, but wasn't really bogged down with laundry.

Curiousshopper, "endless horror stories"? I love my LG FL, I think most of us here do. Every brand has its problems, but I think your statement was uncalled for.

Suburbanmd, I would do whatever you need clean in the old washer, but save some for the new one. I went around the house and found stuff to wash when our new machine showed up, I still love it to this day. LGs rock!

Cold only? Do the darks and save the bulky blankets, linens etc. for the awesome FL arriving- You'll be amazed how much more you can fit in the FL! I am a recent convert and (I think the LG has internal heater in the new one?) I can't believe how whites get white w/the high heat (I have the Bosch 500 plus)-you'll want to check that out!-Have fun- ps don't forget the HE detergent- you can read a ton about laundry detergent on this web- site .There are several good ones out there. With all the hype I had to try Charlie's soap- I do like it so far- just getting use to the no scent- I have to admit, I liked the smell of Tide!-Good Luck-and make sure they level it correctly!

Go ahead and wash them, but wash them all in vinegar to remove reg detergent. That way you won't have a suds prob right off the bat. They will not smell like vinegar, and the vinegar will not harm them. They will just smell clean when done.

Anything heavily soiled, soak in a bucket with detergent to get the stain out, put it in the washer and rinse it and then wash it again in vinegar.
