Oh yeah-- TGIF- that means only 2 more days of frying dough & splattering pizza sauce all over myself--& bit_hing 'cause it's the same old group that's willing to do the cooking-- & for most of us that "old" means aged.

Our FD needs more active members !

Thank goodness for the US High School Band members who've stepped up & volunteered to man the counters. Great kids-- so nice to see when that age group gets so much negative press.

Diane, I feel for you. Keep in mind, others won't take over until you make them. Do you think that at the end of this weekend you can give them a years warning that next year it has to be someone else?

Good luck with the frying and splattering. Maybe you can get some of those band kids to learn a bit about the cooking end and eventually turn the tongs over to them. Stay cool!

It is hotter than H3LL again here - going over 100 tomorrow UGH! Tonight is actually low key, have a pulled pork shoulder doing its thing, will make Lpinks cole slaw (we love that stuff) and open a can of grillin' beans. DH is trying to talk me into making Grilled Potatoes too, but we'll see.

Tomorrow is "Champs" which is the individual championship swim meet. DS#1 qualified for 3 events and DS#2 got into 4. It starts at 7:00 AM and runs through late afternoon tomorrow. Sat night is going to be relaxing and gearing up for the Swim Team Fun Meet and Picnic on Sunday.

Nothing too much going on here except that we have had high winds for the last few days, and the islands are still in orange alert. All the petals have blown off my roses and the garden is full of leaves. No use sweeping them up until the winds are over. The whole of North European air space is now closed due to the massive volcanic eruption in Iceland. I will have to ask how Netla is faring, although the news says that the capital Reykjavik is calm. Spanish news shows Madrid and other main airports full of people sleeping everywhere because their flights to the rest of Europe are cancelled since planes can't fly through the volcanic dust which is spreading further south. Many people stranded here in Tenerife as well as they can't fly back to the United Kingdom. I had Pilates this morning and it was a good workout. Phew....I can feel it in my knees this afternoon! I'm getting used to our new rescue cat, and she's learning to get around our house and garden. Her favourite spot so far is lying on the mess of cables behind It's warm and dark there so I guess she feels safe. We were downtown today as we had things to do there so we ended up eating out again. Weather is warm but windy so we sat indoors at the restaurant. Clinking with my late afternoon coffee. Slow-Cooker Sweet and Spicy Asian Pork Shoulder (Real Simple) Ingredients 1/2 cup low-sodium soy sauce 1/2 cup brown sugar 1 to 2 tablespoons chili-garlic sauce (found in the Asian aisle of the supermarket) 1 tablespoon grated fresh ginger 1 teaspoon Chinese five-spice powder (optional) kosher salt and black pepper 2 1/2 pounds pork shoulder, trimmed of excess fat and cut into 2-inch pieces 1 cup long-grain white rice 1 medium head bok choy, thinly sliced (about 8 cups) 2 scallions, sliced Directions In a 4- to 6-quart slow cooker, combine the soy sauce, sugar, chili-garlic sauce, ginger, five-spice powder (if using), Â½ teaspoon salt, and Â¼ teaspoon pepper. Add the pork and toss to coat. Cook, covered, until the pork is tender, on high for 4 to 5 hours or on low for 7 to 8 hours. Twenty-five minutes before serving, cook the rice according to the package directions. Meanwhile, skim off and discard any fat from the pork. Gently fold the bok choy into the pork and cook, covered, until heated through, 2 to 4 minutes. Serve with the rice and sprinkle with the scallions.

Pepper Steak Sandwiches Warm sandwiches using deli roast beef 1 medium onion, thinly sliced 1 medium green pepper, thinly sliced 1 medium red pepper, thinly sliced 1/2 cup mayonnaise, divided 1/4 cup Italian salad dressing 3/4 lb thinly sliced deli roast beef 5 sandwich rolls; small sub buns 3/4 cup shredded mozzarella cheese In a large skillet, saute the onion and peppers in 2 tbsp mayonnaise until crisp-tender. Remove vegetables and keep warm. Reduce heat. Add the Italian dressing, roast beef and remaining mayonnaise to the skillet. Cook and stir until heated through, 5 minutes. Place beef and vegetables on toasted rolls, top with mozzarella cheese. Heat from warm top roll will partially soften/melt cheese.

Linguine with Roasted Asparagus and Almond Pesto Swap almonds for the usual pine nuts in this twist on classic pesto, and turn it into a one-dish meal with a few bright vegetables. This pesto recipe doubles easily; keep any extra in a sealed container in the refrigerator for up to a week. It's delicious on crostini for a quick bite, or served with roast chicken or salmon.Serves four to six. Kosher salt 3/4 lb. asparagus, trimmed 2 cups grape tomatoes 1/4 cup extra-virgin olive oil 1/2 cup sliced almonds 1/4 cup fresh basil leaves 2 Tbs. finely grated Parmigiano-Reggiano 1 lb. dried linguine Freshly ground black pepper Position racks in the upper and lower thirds of the oven and heat the oven to 425Â°F. Bring a large pot of well-salted water to a boil over high heat. Arrange the asparagus in a single layer on one half of a large rimmed baking sheet. Arrange the tomatoes on the other half of the sheet. Drizzle both with 1 Tbs. of the oil, season with 1/4 tsp. salt, and toss to coat. Roast on the top rack until the tomatoes have collapsed and the asparagus are bright green, about 20 minutes. While the vegetables roast, put the almonds on another rimmed baking sheet and toast on the bottom rack, stirring occasionally, until fragrant and lightly browned, 10 to 12 minutes. Reserve 1 heaping Tbs. of the almonds for garnish and put the remaining almonds in a food processor. Remove the tips from the asparagus and set aside. Roughly chop the remaining asparagus and add to the food processor along with the basil, cheese, 1/2 tsp. salt, and the remaining 3 Tbs. olive oil. Pulse until a coarse paste forms, about 10 seconds. Season to taste with salt and pepper and transfer to a large serving bowl. Cook the linguine in the boiling water according to package directions until al dente. Drain the pasta and reserve 1/2 cup of the pasta cooking water. Add the pasta to the pesto and toss to coat. If necessary, add some or all of the reserved cooking water to loosen the pesto to a saucy consistency. Garnish with the tomatoes, asparagus tips, and reserved almonds, and serve.

Diane, I agree with Nancy, no one is going to take over until they have to. Now's the time to teach some of those high school kids the ropes, so they can do it when the time comes.

Nancy, have fun at the festival. There are all kinds of them this time of year, what fun.

Alexa, when it's this hot, the pool is the best place to be. Your kids will be cooler than you will be watching them!

Linda, I'm thinking quiet weekend for yu...

Here I've got pickles to deal with tonight, and the garden tomorrow. Stepmom just got back home from her stay in the nursing home and I'm going to have to sit down with her and explain that she has more bills than money and that all her credit cards are cancelled because they haven't been paid by anyone while she was in the hospital until I became conservator. She's a shopping addict, which is why she has all those bills, and her sudden withdrawal is going to be ugly. Good thing my sister lives with her, she can listen to her instead of me!

Wish me luck, I'll be wishing I was running the rototiller before I'm done, I'm afraid.

I took Monday off so it is a long weekend. Amanda and Dave are camping at Silver Lake with the kids and Elery and I are taking the Jeep over there on Monday. There are Lake Michigan sand dunes that allow motorized vehicles, so Dave wants to do some "sand running". I think I'll just stay and play on the beach with the kids...

Fairs, festivals, swim meets sound fun.... dealing with step mom, "Not so much". Sorry about that Annie!

Sounds like Linda and I have the quiet weekends so far.

We'll be picking up DS#4 (the "baby") at the airport Saturday. He's been in Montana at Glacier NP doing a geology "internship" research project for the summer. Can't wait to see him.... he's called a few times and it's sounded both challenging and rewarding.

Horse trailer/RV in tow, we're leaving for Virginia on Monday AM (hopefully just ahead of the tropical storm heading our way) to see our land, do a few odds and ends and move our first load of stuff into a storage unit.... so lots of tying up loose ends and setting the house straight before we leave. Fingers crossed that we'll have a showing or two while we're gone.

Hi all - yucky weather here. You know that pesky hurricane season is upon us. So, no plans have been made for this weekend.

Linda, I'd love to hear your story about putting the car on Craigslist.

TGIF everyone! Sounds like lots of fun plans for everyone this weekend. Stay cool everybody! Annie, good luck this weekend, that can't be fun.

My plans are pretty low key: clean the house, do the laundry, give the dog a bath and pack. Cause I'm going to Italy on Monday!! 16 days till I have to set foot in the office here again (never mind the fact that I have to be in the office in Italy, because it's ITALY!). I'll post pictures and say hi while I'm there if I can get enough of an internet connection. If not, I'll do it when I get home. Hugs to you all, have a wonderful weekend!

A big ~clink~ with a strawberry margarita. We got up early and picked 20 lbs. of strawberries at the u-pick. A bunch in the freezer, a bowlful of the most perfect berries for dessert, a bowlful of 'seconds', all sugared and ready for more margarits and a couple of Ellie Topp's jams going (one an oven jam w/ balsamic...should be interesting).

Also had to deal with a 26 lb. lug of the biggest, most beautiful apricots I've ever seen (ten bucks!). I'm playing with apricot dipping sauces and bbq sauces this weekend.

Tomorrow is a short day at work and then we're going to dinner for anniversary, which is Sunday, but it's going to be hot in town so we opted to stay home and celebrate by weeding the garden.

We're still trying to watch 'Dances With Wolves'....extended verion, oy....236 minutes! Thats what Netflix has! (between Avatar and Battlestar Gallactica - we're watching the new one - I thought it would be good to trot out and see a younger Mary McDonnell)
