weather bug....

I use Firefox and have AccuWeather add-on. It has a green circle; when I point the mouse to the circle, a radar screen pops up. It also shows current weather conditions (including temperature), plus forecast for the next 2 days.

The computer guru put one on mine, gives the city, the temp, and the phase of the moon. Wish i had my weather bug back.

I have the temp on Yahoo bar, its saying 28 at 12:53 am. its going down again.

Using my computer is all about speed for me so I avoid background programs and other resource hogs on it. The only backgrounds I run are those absolutely necessary and those for security,malware and virus protection.

Because I keep it lean and fast I can search the info almost as fast as looking at a toolbar application. I can type wea into Google,click the weather.com on the drop-down list and my local weather comes up. I don't need or really want to know the weather every minute anyway. If I did I would just put it on a tab anyway.

Google is my homepage and since I use Firefox all the stuff like this forum is tabbed for instant access. I think my desktop has three icons.The background is what came with the 'puter.

I go to friends' homes and they are always complaining about how slow their computer is even though they subscribe to the same service. Clutter, litter and more clutter is their real problem without the extra drivers to support it.

Don't mean to rant but just giving a reason why I personally don't put aps on my puter. Some people love them and weather bug is certainly not a problem at all by itself. It's when you add it to all the other stuff people like because it looks cool. A little bit here and there can quickly add up to a slower system.

Agree with WildChild - slows my computer down.

I do have outdoor sensors that are wireless. I can just look at my window sill and see the temp. It also tells me precip amount.

I have my weather in my home page location. With other words, when I click on home, my weather comes up. I have it set for a blank page, when I fire my puter up. Goes much faster than when you have to wait for your home page to show. :)

Of course, I have one of Allison's pictures as my back ground picture. It changes almost as often as I get new pictures.

I used to use Casey's, but sorry, Casey, I now like Allison pictures more. :)

I have the Weather Channel icon, showing temp, on mine.

I have weather channel just a small icon in the tool bar that tells the temp but if I click it I can get alot more info......Sandy

I haven't found the ideal program for me as yet. When I want the temp in the tray, I usually use Weather Watcher or sometimes Weather Pulse. Weather Exchange has this feature too and is a good program with a lot of info. I didn't like Weatherbug or the Weather Channel one but they have the tray icon. I've tried so many different programs, I can't name them all. I use different things at different times.

I understand the rants about a lean machine but I also have my computer for function so I do run several apps that I use a lot. If I was that worried about it, I'd get off the computer. I do however replace a lot of Microsoft's hog apps with functional ones. I use Smartclock and I run Opera as it's so much faster than the Internet Elephant. I use Spywareblaster and I keep a firewall going and have antivirus and spyware checks done frequently to keep a clean machine. I check the disk, defrag and clean out old files on a semi-regular basis. I also run a reminder program, a notebook program, caller ID and have my email checked every so often. I often run an instant messenger since I use it and occasionally I'll stream some audio while I'm working on it. Like I said, my computer is to be used, not looked at so I do keep it respectably clean but I'm not scared to run the programs and things that serve me. I don't get into all the cutesy things some do but I use a wallpaper and color scheme I like and also bootscreens that aren't obnoxious. It comes down to personal priorities.

For me, weather is a hobby, but more importantly it's important to keep up on it for work and for my own health and well being. I like to keep up on the weather and there's several ways of doing it. Firefox has several very good add-ons (formerly called "extensions") and I've tried all that I've found. Weatherbug doesn't give me the info I want. One uses AccuWeather that is less accurate than others; One uses Weather.com which is better but I like some of the features of some of them so for a while I ran 3 or 4 of them to see which I liked the best. I quit running the Weather Watcher in the background except on rare occasion and have the add-on for it on Firefox now, but I don't use Firefox often.

I have a homepage set up with lots of weather info so I usually just go there and refresh the page for the current conditions or I might even open up a "bug" {{gwi:1588988}} and have that page update automatically every 15 min or so and I can check that. I also have a page set up with temps for all around me and I'll update that occasionally and use that when I want to watch a front move through or something. Much depends on what I want. There's lots of options.

Actually, when I set up a new machine, especially for myself, there's a LOT of changes and tweaks done to it to make it serviceable to me. And I usually do a lot of changes on computers I set up for others too. Saves me a lot of time in the long run since I don't have to consult with them on all their viruses, malware and other problems because they don't maintain their units. But that's another thread!

Not on my tray, but I use iGoogle as my home page with a gadget that shows the temp and local weather forecast.
