Cleaning mildew from inside a wash machine
Comments (4)Thanks everyone for your input. The rag with bleach sounds like a good idea, but I donÂt think itÂs big enough to fit my hand. I can try a rag on a stick. I called Whirlpool and she said just spray bleach on it and let it drain into the machine and then run clean cycle. I am sure itÂs because I use liquid soap and liquid softener. Maybe I can switch to dry soap and use dryer sheets in the dryer. I hate to think of that mold getting anywhere near my clothes!!!...See MoreCould use a hand picking out a washing machine/dryer combo....
Comments (4)The 4000 series are not stackable because Miele didn't design them to be stackable. In order for laundry sets to stack, they need to be specifically designed so that the dryer interlocks with the washer below. In the case of Miele models that are stackable pairs, this requires removing the top of the washer and the installation of a stacking kit, allowing the two appliances to be securely fastened together. I'm guessing Miele didn't design the 4000 series to be stacked because the stack would be too tall for most people to see or reach the dryer controls at the top. Stacking unmatched appliances not designed to interlock in a stack would potentially be dangerous, because short of welding the two units together, there'd be the danger that the dryer could fall or slip off from the top of the washer. Washers and dryers shake and vibrate while in operation, increasing the risk. There is, however a way to accomplish a variation on a stack. It would involve building a very strong shelf above the washer on which the dryer would rest. The shelf would have to be substantial and be tied into the framing of the walls or supported with strong timber or steel posts. You would also need some method of securing the appliance so that it couldn't slip off, if vibration caused movement. Going this route, the dryer would be above the washer, but technically, they wouldn't be stacked....See MorePlease help me find a simple sturdy washing machine
Comments (10)Again, thanks for all the replies and helpful hints about using Speed Queens. Having explored the local laundromat - it seems clean, but who knows what was washed in the load before yours? - I am now doing wash using the 5 gallon bucket and (new!) plunger method. Saves money and gives you great arm toning exercise at the same time. For one person's wash it's really not bad at all. @jakvis: I don't think this poor old Maytag is worth fixing. I googled its serial number and found that mine was not the only one with problems. Indeed, mine seems to have lasted a relatively long time, probably due to light use. The link below has some reviews. Here is a link that might be useful: Maytag SAV2655A Reviews...See MoreNeed to clean my washing machine
Comments (58)So to reiterate, it's not my washer, it's in my parents' rental. The tenant was apparently kind of clueless when it came to appliances. Mold and mildew fortunately doesn't seem to a problem, it's a combo of a year's worth of limescale from the very hard water, massive buildup from overdosed liquid detergent and fabric softener, and I'm sure a lovely biofilm as well. I believe the bulk of the detergent residue is gone at this point, so it's mostly a matter of getting the scale off the drum, which may take a couple of washes. The scum on the boot and outer edge of the casket will also need to be cleaned off manually, but I think I'm going to let my parents deal with that parent ;) @Sparky, that's interesting about them recommending cold water with the vinegar wash, and it does make a certain amount of sense. I know citric acid has to be used hot, but that's because calcium citrate isn't very soluble at lower temperatures. In my own experience vinegar isn't the best at dealing with scale, but it's great at taking off hard water soap scum. We always just pour it straight into the tub or wherever, without any hot water, let it sit for a while and the soap scum usually comes off in flakes when you scrub it....See Moredadoes
