Mr16s vs. 5' Cans, Placement, etc. -- EEEK, I'd love your advice

We're working on our whole-house remodel...and I have a meeting re: electrical tomorrow morning. Kitchen lighting is important to me. I'm way behind, and overwhelmed, so am hoping for sound advice from you experts :-)

Goals in order of importance for the kitchen:

1) Functional -- very good task lighting

2) Aesthetically pleasing -- minimize trim, holes in ceiling/swiss cheese effect (we are putting in a tongue & groove wood ceiling) and size of holes

3) This is our forever home, so want to get this right

We have 8' ceilings.

Our architect has spec'd 5" cans. They are placed in the aisles. A rep at a local reputable lighting store recommend MR16s due to ceiling height. I do like the MR16s better due to the smaller hole.

Pros/Cons of MR16s vs. a 4-5" can for kitchen lighting?

In terms of placement, the rep also mentioned about 1 light every 3.5' (but could go every 3' in the kitchen). That sounds good based on what I've read on this board. Is this right despite the size of the lamp (MR16 vs. 5" can)?

Also, is there a primer re: recessed lighting placement in kitchens (over counters vs. aisles, etc.)?

You might want to consider using the new EcoSmart
4 in. 9.5-Watt (65W) LED Downlight (E).

MR16 lights are typically used for spotlighting (not general illumination) and could be pricey depending on whether they require low voltage cans or not.

I used a 35 lumens per sq ft rule as a rough guide to figure out the number of cans I needed. I used LR6 and deliberately discounted the max output to 600 lumens per can since they are all on dimmers. Max output (for modern dimmers) is limited to 95%.

The location of joists, ducting, wiring, ... in the ceiling will ultimately dictate where the cans will be located.

Thanks, David, I will look at those. I was thinking of waiting on LEDs since the technology is changing so much.

Have you seen MR16 lights used in kitchens for general lighting? Do they work well? Or not? Is it true that one can use a smaller light like an MR16 if the ceilings are lower?

How can I find out how many lumens per light? e.g., how many lumens for one MR16? Then I can discount for dimmers.

Our ceiling is open now and HVAC and electrical will go in at the same time, so we have some flexibility.

Lavender - thanks for the layout and granite feedback! Rhome -- thanks for your layout ideas (and forgive me for not calling on you specifically for advice, you obviously know what you're talking about!) My question was about the upper cabinets -- @lavender, I am SO looking forward to our new lazy susan base. It will have an adjustable shelf with the lazy susan attached (so no center pole to interfere with objects) and I can make the top shelf taller for appliances, and the lower shelf shallower for bowls, etc. As for the uppers, the plan currently includes a cabinet opening fully on the sink wall, abutting a blind corner cabinet, opening on the range wall, that goes into the corner. My KD said that she could change the design to a 90-degree-opening shelf, like this: Rhome, you're right that the cabinet sizes would change -- the KD suggested using 21" uppers on either side of the range for symmetry (which would necessitate changing the lower tray cabinet to 9" instead of 12"). I still think it might be worth it for the increased access to the corner space. We currently have an angled cabinet, and everything gets lost in it -- I just pulled out a 4 year old cake mix last night! Never again!! The KD insists that we don't need a filler between the pantry and fridge, but I'm not convinced. The Kitchen Aid CD French Door doors swivel somewhat when they open, so I'm not as concerned with a problem when they fridge is opened -- I am more concerned with not being able to open the pantry doors fully to access the pull-outs.

Gudang, a lot of people here on this forum started with a heavy dense soil mix, often with compost and other soil components - because that is what is commonly available. Then they noticed that their plants are start to suffer at one point and came here for advise. Al (Tapla) has relentlessly taught the concept for better soil mix, fertilizing, pruning, repotting and many other topics. Most made an effort to follow in his foot steps and found his teachings to be invaluable and succeeded in keeping their plants flourishing. In short, he has a lot of credibility here. Not only that they have subsequently helped others because they understood the concept that no book can offer. Whereas you have yet to offer sound advice with evidence of success. First you have to build and establish your credibility - show your work and explain not only what but also how and why. For example, terms like less porous and more porous does not make any sense - more or less compared to what?

We are in the middle of a kitchen remodel of similar proportions and budget, BUT we are able to do a lot of the work ourselves so our costs for wall repair and floor refinishing and levelung are very minimal. We also have plumbers in our family and saved a couple thousand there. We saved another couple thousand because we know a licenced electrician who was willing to do our work as a side job. Our $25,000 kitchen remodel should have cost us closer to $30-35,000. We had a window made smaller, that cost $1200 for window and install (does not include interior wall repair and finish as we will do that). Making a bigger window requires more work (headers) and will cost closer to $2000 with intall. We found it was cheaper to have a local cabinet maker make our cabinets, plus he was able to come and measure and adjust the plan and he will intall and actually scribe the end cabs to fit against our plaster walls. It ends up being cheaper because whereas Lowes has stack boxes, the custom can build the boxes to the required size which depending on the design can be way more efficient. Our cabinet quote from Home Depot was $20,000 ($15,000 with discounts) Our cabinet quote from the local custom was $12,000 and the install is only $1200. Hope this helps! Also, I like the looks of the area with the fridge and I see what you are going for visually, but my first thought was also "that fridge door is too close to the wall and won't open!".

4 burner vs 5 burner stove top, looking for advice

Mine is a double oven electric with 5 burners. Three out of five burners’ size can be adjusted to fit pot/pan diameters. The front control glass panel is touch activation, and the incremental heat settings for each burner give the same amount of heat for the ones I turn on. I do place utensils (on a plate) at other unused burner surface, sometimes they’re on the counter space nearby. I have never used all 5 at once but since the spec does not exceed 30 Amp circuit feeding the whole unit as in my case, I think all burners should perform fine at their setting. Electrolux brand

Those EcoSmart units are really what I would have used if they had been available > 2 years ago. I think the form factor and output will not change significantly (if at all) since it is good enough.

There are LED solutions in the same market segment from CSL too, but they're really expensive.

LED MR16s on the other hand will continue improving since the output currently cannot match halogen MR16s > 20W.

No, I've not seen MR16 used alone in kitchens for general lighting. Mainly for accent/ decorative lighting.

In the situations where I've seen MR16s used, either they were too under powered or too few.

Halogen MR16 (50W) should be able to produce up to 800 lumens (max).

IMO, I won't lower the ceiling.
