Small, narrow living room - help!
Comments (19)You are so welcome, laurensing. You are asking the wrong person for a rug suggestion that is subtle. It's not that I like crazy rugs, but I would go for something interesting. The sofa and art are a starter. For rugs, I do best on craigslist or estate sales, or anthropologie rugs on sale. You can find a quality wool handmade rug for a great price and just bring it straight to the cleaners. The cheap poly rugs are not appealing to me. You were very smart to start with a classic sofa design and color. Looks like the entrance goes right into the living room. If it's right off the street, be careful about a light rug or a rug with a light background, as it will get dirty so fast and a dark rug, especially without a design, shows every little piece of lint (drives me crazy). Here's an 8x10 from anthropologie https://www.anthropologie.com/shop/geo-megali-rug?category=sale-rugs&color=005&quantity=1&size=8%E2%80%99%20X%2010%E2%80%99&type=REGULAR I like this for your room also and might consider the garnet color which would be amazing on your wood floors, as it has that mahogany color in the rug. https://www.anthropologie.com/shop/meralda-rug?category=sale-rugs&color=006&quantity=1&size=9%E2%80%99%20X%2012%E2%80%99&type=REGULAR...See MoreHelp with a small living/dining room/front door leads to this room)
Comments (4)I think it's a bit tough to give you advice because how you arrange your home depends so much on the lifestyle you lead. That said, I've offered some broad tips to aid in your redesign. Use light furniture with pads, then it can be moved around to make space. You can push the table against the wall and then pull it back when you're entertaining people. This provides some versatility to your space and lets you change your arrangement quickly to suit your needs. Try to find storage solutions that are suspended above the ground. Having a cabinet around the television can provide with a nice dark contrast and additional storage space. Anything high up can be long term storage; all the air space above 7 ft is mostly wasted (Unless you're legendary basketball player Shaq). Experiment! Spend an evening moving furniture around and see how you feel about it! There are many factors about your situation that are hard to consider. Do you watch TV during the day? (if so, moving it across from the window will give you glare!) Is eating together a large part of your family life? What do you see outside of your window? How late do you stay up? etc. Finally, do some critical analysis! What parts of the living room do you spend the most time in? why? Is that chair in the back used often or does it just take up room? Do you spend a lot of time playing with your child and their toys in the little play area against the north(assuming north is up) wall? You can setup a phone to take a timelapse over the course of a day and see exactly what you use your room for and how you enjoy spending your time. I hope this helps and feel free to ask me any more questions! P.S. It seems like your family likes the colour green; I would definitely recommend committing to it and adding some colour to your space! It can be as extreme as painting an entire wall or just getting a new cover for your futon!...See Morevery small, odd shaped living room with no room for a couch, help!
Comments (10)Hey Mikeala, while you may have to make some compromises due to space restrictions, you can definitely fit a compact couch in the room. As @mindshift recommends, it would a good idea to keep all your furniture compact and as small as possible. I've made a couple of options for you here. (All dimensions are approximated from the images you have posted) For the first layout, I've eliminated the coffee table and added a slim console by the entrance, a wall mounted TV and an end table. You could also buy nested tables so you could stack them when they aren't being used. For the area by the staircase, I've added a tall bookcase and a couple of chairs for extra seating. adding a mirror would give a sense of a larger space, I've styled this room with modern furniture with a touch of hollywood glam. For the second option, the entrance is more open although the TV unit has been placed on the large wall. This allows TV viewing from both seating areas and yet separates the space. You may prefer this layout if you don't like the idea of having a living right at the entrance. I've styled this room with Scandinavian furniture. Do send us measurements and photos so we could further customize these for you. You could also add/ swap furniture and make your own layouts here....See MoreStaging Living Room
Comments (12)Agree with advice so far. Major good advice to paint that turquoise wall same color as the other walls. Remove the metal items on the light color wall - the items don’t look like art but rather like coat hooks & placement in LR is distracting & confusing. I looked at your older postings to see how this room was. You had couches closer to walls which looks better. If intent is to have a path to french doors behind couch, move couch on right in pic back to wall, which art should be removed from. Move rug to right of room enough so that couch front feet on,y are just sitting on rug. Float second couch with back to foyer & facing french doors, again with feet just on rug - make an L. Put one of the end tables back in the corner between the two couches & put either a floor lamp or table lamp on it. Put one recliner back into room at opposite corner of rug facing the two couches & put the other end table next to it to anchor it. I think this arrangement minimizes the bowling alley look of long room with furniture lining the walls. I think this also creates a conversation setting so buyers can appreciate the nice room size & what looks like nice flooring. That bright wall though really needs to go as too distracting. It’s a personal color choice that worked great for you but needs to be neutral for buyers. Make sure house is spotlessly clean & all clutter & personal items hidden Good luck!...See Morepalimpsest
