That sounds like fungus gnats. They don't harm the plant; they're feeding on organic matter in the soil. But, they can be pesky. I'm leery of using pesticides indoors. Perhaps someone else has a remedy for them.

I'd repot it in the same size pot, with fresh soil. Or can you remove it from the pot and set it on newspapers to try and absorb the wetness from the soil (if it is wet?) Those pesky bugs will drive you insane! DS had some in her plants, she is famous for overwatering and yours could have been too wet at the store for awhile. Anyway, she put sand over the top of the soil, that didn't work, she bought those yellow sticky pest strips and that did catch some, she tried a fan blowing on the dirt to dry it out. I am pretty sure she had to repot and slap her fingers when she wanted to water plants! LOL

Put some dishsoap into a little water and pour it through. It should kill them. Then let it dry completely out. They only live in damp soil. They'll die if it dries.

'Un'Luckygardener, as Ron eluded, those do sound like fungas gnats. A search on the houseplant forum will give lots of suggestions (although right now the search method doesn't seem to work so great with the 'bugs' GW has in it right now).

If you are lucky to come across a product called sticky traps, they are little yellow and very sticky traps (much like fly paper for the bigger flies) that are set into the soil, the trap above the soil, and the flies fly into it and stay stuck, even if it's a little leg or small portion of it's wing. They die, and thus cannot lay any more eggs in the soil. So it takes several weeks to get rid of them all, since you have to wait for the eggs already laid to hatch, and the larvae to grow into flying fungas gnats.

This method works, my yucca had hundreds. I would do a rough count and there'd be 80 or so per side one those paper traps, and I'd replaced the set of 4 twice!

These bugs, as a rule, feed on decaying matter, which could possibly be dead roots in your pot if it was overwatered and kept too wet for a period of time. So careful with the watering, I let my yucca dry out lots each time before I watered. Good Luck!

I spray them with soapy water too. I go through this about once a year, in the fall. Seems to work.

Another one that does soap and water. EVERYTHING that comes into the house from being outside in the summer, gets a good 'shampooing'! LOL Seems to work for the last...many years!

I'd let the soil dry out all the way, which should kill the eggs. In the meantime, put out a small cup of cider vinegar. For some reason, they are attracted to the vinegar and they will drown.
