You know very well that a box cake with goo poured over is nowhere near as good as a from scratch cake....but somehow we keep trying to make short cuts to the good stuff.

Eileen, you are so right! My mom has a bunch of family favorites and every once in awhile she tries something different with the old standbys. Fine, I understand wanting to experiment and try new things, but don't mess with success!

Oh well, I'm guilty of it, too.

We all have our failures!!! You can't always cook old standbyes...trying new things is half the fun...even if they don't turn out as planned!

That is one that should have stayed buried and stick with the T&T that is great (we love that Coconut Cake too). I'm all for trying something new - but not when it reads (box cake with goo) LOLOLOLOL!

I'm guilty too, I have recipes I love and then I think "but what would it be like if I.....". Sometimes it's good, many times it isn't.

Nothing that starts with a cake mix and a can of condensed milk is going to be as good as a homemade coconut cake, though.

That recipe sound like someone's attempt at a version of Pastel de Tres Leches seriously misfired. Tres Leches is a wonderful cake, a real classic, of which the recipe sounds like it shouldn't work, but it does.

Personally, I have had a number of different 'flavors' of "Poke Cake" that were really quite good.

You can't compare them with made from scratch cakes, though.
It's a completely different category.
Kind of like comparing apples and oranges.
Both good, but different.

I had a lot of Cake Box mixes, that were very good.

I don't know anything about the Tres Leches but
I had an uncle who talked me into trying pouring milk or cream on a slice of Poundcake.
It was pretty good.

In fact I'll nuke some Vanilla Ice Cream a few seconds, put that on top and give it a try.

Along the lines of messing with a recipe I knew I shouldn't have, but couldn't help myself......I'm ashamed to admit this on this forum.....hanging my head in shame.....I messed with one of AnnT's recipes. I added chocolate chips to her Decadent Brownie recipe. Please don't kick me off the forum for that. Believe me when I say that there actually is such a thing as too much chocolate. So Eileen, I know how you feel.

The worst is when you mess with a recipe and the result is FANTASTIC...but then you can't remember exactly what it was that you did. :(

I messed up making lemon bars once. This time, it wasn't on purpose. There were two lemon bar recipes in the book, one on each page. One was for traditional lemon bars, the other for a lemon-cheesecake type of bar. I started making one, and ended up finishing the other...no, I really don't know how I did it that...and the resulting bars were absolutely delicious. Never been able to make them again.

Uh, can we get the original recipe please...

Growing up I was taught that if you can't say something nice, you shouldn't say anything at all.

I have found that to be a pretty good rule to try to follow.
Especially when you are a relative newcomer on forums!
