Inspired by the obit seen in RP a couple months ago, I requested Appaloosa by Robert Parker from the library. So far it is a very quick read, which is a good thing due to some of the content. I really hate it when the bad guys are 'winning' and am really thin-skinned at times with respect to certain kinds of violence (and I am sure this is nothing compared with Larry McMurtry's novels!). It's funny, sometimes I can read any novel, no problem and other times I have a hard time reminding myself 'it's just a story!' So far, the dialogue is snappy and seems appropriate for the time period, the action is fast-paced, and it doesn't get bogged down in too much description (mind, how much description does the old west need? Mention a tumbleweed and you're there!)

jessy, reading your original request and the information you provided has me at a total loss. I though English schools were bad enough at teaching irrelevant courses and subject matter (although they are belatedly trying to tidy up their acts) but the above is just so strange. I asked my DH (a long-time teacher) what age Grade 9'ers were and told him what was expected of your son. He said it sounded typical of a 'modern' university course, where 'studying' is left to the student, everything is wishy-washy and very little basic information is either taught or learnt. As some other RP'ers have said I would be interested if this course has been decided by the history/English teacher, the Head of the Dept or a School board. (here in England by the time pupils reach 14+ years it is the Examination boards that set the curriculum) As it stands, although your son might get something from the reading matter as works of literature I honestly don't think he will learn any history except maybe a little from The Scarlet Pimpernel. How, for eg can he learn any historical facts from the stories of King Arthur? It's as daft as asking a child of the future what he learnt about our generation from reading The Lord of the Rings. I'd love to hear the teacher's explanation of Patterns of Interaction and what it actually means or be a fly on the wall during his lessons. This woolly concept seems way too long (the history alone would occupy a UK kid the whole of his senior school days) and bound to lead to terminal boredom. As far as the book-cover thing goes. What I seriously would suggest, if they have to produce some sort of 'Art Work' is that between them, the class produces an illustrated 'time-line' as a frieze round the room, starting with the first Unit 1300 > > > adding the main historical events and fitting the book titles into the appropriate places. This way not only will they notice how far away Homer is from the 'modern world' but they might learn the sequence of history, a concept of which many children (and adults) have little understanding. Jessy this is most interesting . . . because it seems so CAZY. :-) . . . btw, keep off Richard Burton imo. He had serious problems of a sexual nature (his wife burnt all his letters and papers) so not really suitable for school!

I am just finishing up Bernard Cornwall's "War of the Wolf." The author is an historian and his excellent research shows in the detail. I recommend this to anyone who wants to get an idea of how "England" actually began. It is set in the time just after Alfred the Great, when warring kingdoms (Mercia, Wessex, Northumberland, etc.) vied for power in a land invaded by Danes, Saxons, Vikings, and Scots. King Alfred's dream was to unite the island under one language and one government. This book tells of the lengthy struggle that went into that effort, after much warfare. I usually would not choose to read books dealing with war, but I have an interest in Britain before the Norman invasion and this was satisfying to read, in all its complexity.

Has anyone mentioned The Woman in the Windowby A.J. Finn? I searched the forum before posting, but it's not turning up. I can hardly believe this one hasn't been discussed here. Several people at my book club meetings have been raving about it, although it's not been on our reading list. I decided what the heck, I'd start it, and I cannot put it down. It absolutely has me on the edge of my seat, and is very well written -- the kind of story that just draws you in from the very beginning, with bizarre happenings that leave one guessing and wondering. I can't wait to see how this plays out, and hope I won't be disappointed at the end. I also just learned that the author is a young man, which surprised me, because of the depth of emotion he gives to his female character. Besides that, he's rather adorable.

I cannot believe how crowded the Market is! I was only there once, years and years ago and I don't remember anything, I wasn't a foodie back then I think I just kind of walked thru it in a daze.

Ah thanks Pam, I love those flash mob videos. I've seen a few on OperaChic's blog, and I like how they promote the local opera houses, all suffering. My favorite is still 'Do-Re-Me' in Grand Central. Visiting Reading Terminal is on my to-do list, but I'll probably miss the next flash they do :-(

This was about 10 years ago but my timing was perfect to catch the newly opened Gotham Chamber Opera at Grand Central Market in Manhattan. What a thrill!

Thanks for bring back a nice memory for me.

Loved it CC. Thanks for sharing/postin. I remember the one in Grand Central when everyone froze for a couple of minutes too. My latest fave was the Black Eyed Peas on Michigan Avenue in Chicago. They managed to get twenty thousand plus people to dance in sync with each other. Very cool!

I went to look up the Black Eyed Peas thing. Is it spontaneous? All of these videos are fun. Americans can use some fun these days! I love the events like "do rae me" in Grand Central or the opera in the terminal; they're all smile inducing.

I'm not an opera fan but Elery is, so I'm going to show this to him, he'll love it.

One of the local malls here often has a piano player on Saturdays. The older gentleman who accompanies the pianist sometimes gives impromptu waltz lessons to willing bystanders, and that's kind of fun.

If its lunchtime the market get really packed as they are only about a block from the courthouse and get LOTS of folk on jury duty!!
And if it during the flower show....forget about it LOL!!

You know what public performance I always enjoy? The pianist in Nordstrom's. The music was so lovely the other day I stayed and looked at stuff just a little longer.

I loved tha video! I would have been thrilled had I been there...it looks and sounds like so much fun!!! I was there for lunch during the flower show and it was PACKED!
